Strength:

Power, Accuracy

Weakness:

This series of amps (X70) sometimes has problems with the Input Selector, two friends of mine have a 570 and 1070 - even though, this does not apply to mine.

Up to now, I can not report anything bad about this amp. It is quite powerful, but still can get even smallest details out of every kind of music.

I am using this amp together with a pair of ASW-speakers, which have a rather low impedance (4 ohm) and quite low output, as they are shelf-speakers. With these speakers, the Amp really comes out of the dark - it drives them to what I did not expect them to be able to do. Powerful but accurate, no clipping at all (in fact, it might be clipping - but I did not try, as it was much too loud for my ear earlier.

Something general: NEVER underestimate the importance of good cables, both the signal cables as well as the speaker cables. If you do not believe it, give it a try, get some good quality cables - you will never return them. The difference is really astonishing - even people who do not care about HiFi at all do hear the difference, which is sometimes bigger (but still cheaper) than buying more expensive equipment.

I bought this amp for 250,- DM (I do study in the Netherlands, but originally come from Germany). For this price (and even for more), this Amp is really very good value for money.

I would have rated this Amp 5 stars normally, but I have listened to McIntosh amps before - so, no choice ;-( (I would call myself Audiophile if only I had the money).

Strength:

I have totally abused this amplifier to what should be DEATH for the last 4 or 5 years, and it hasn't faltered once. I run a pair of DCM KX-212's (2 12" subs, 6" mid and average horn tweeter in each, 200watts each). I know that they aren't great speakers, but they were all I could afford at the time, and to this day, I must say that that Amplifier has made them nothing less than marvelous. I love this amp and will take it to my grave with me. I am no audiophile, but for me, the average loud-music listener, this amp is awesome. The low-end push could use some help, but anywhere past the 1/4 volume mark and you will be evicted. The neighbors 2 miles away will hear The Allman Brothers singing in their ears.

Weakness:

No serious complaints.

A respectable amp at a respectable price.

not very good at low levels due to its low amperage.at mid volume levels you realize that this is really a midrange to high note amp.clean,no hum.lacks a mute switch.for robust sound at lower levels buy a high current amp, this just will not do it for you.i run it with a set of dutch made philips with 15" bass and i crank up the loudness to make up for the low current deficiency.don't recommend it if you want to hear clean wide open sound at low to mis volume levels.decent if you want to hear it loud.

this is a 4 year old amp that competed against the tough amps like Audiolab 8000A and Arcam Delta 290. i didn't have the chance to compare it against any of the amps mentioned therefore, i have no reference. i am currently using this amp with a Tannoy Mercury M2.5 and a Marantz VCD-500. i am quite satisfied with it for the past 4 years and the sound is just great. based on the variety of my music preferences, even classical music, the sound is never fatigued and it never sounds like running out of gas. even in HT use, this amp sounds hyperactive and never lets the sound go thin whatever the event is. i'm even driving 2 sets of speakers with this amp and it's still working just fine. wish i can compare it against the latest amps.

Strength:

I've owned this amp for 5 years and have had no problems at all.I push a pair of CerwinVega12"3ways and get powerfull, clean sound. The biggest improvement over my previous receiver(also a Yamaha)is that my lps sound "punchier".The bass is strong and deep and easily rattles the windows in my house. Also,I love the variable loudness control.

Weakness:

none that I can think of

Excelent value,great sound

I've run this amplifier for about 5 years and have been reasonably happy with it's performance, it delivers plenty of power into the Paradigms and Celestions I've been using . It's not an amp really suited to classical , as it's not really transparent enough to deliver good accuracy . However it handles most other styles of music well although sounds a bit tired with some kinds of Jazz. Overall a good amp although I'm sure there are products out there that are better value for money.

After having an argument with the local Yamaha dealer about parts I have vowed not to deal with Yamaha again.
