This is a large amplifier, but the amount of watts it delivers explains it. It is a very good all-around amplifier. At the price - perfect in midrange, liquid in treble and rich in bass (that could be a little bit woolly in complex music). The sound is always smooth and natural. The only one that can compete with AX-592 in that price range is ONKYO. If midrange and natural voices are priority and you like a lot of bass - consider to audition YAMAHA.

I have nothing but good this to say about this unit, especially given it's very reasonable price. It has every feature one could want - many more than other amps costing much more. It is very flexible, which has helped me in setting up my system.
It has a good size power supply for an amp of 100w/channel. I don't think I'd recommend it to drive any "very tough" loads like Martin Logans, but for the average 4-8 ohm speaker it's just fine. The sound (to me anyway) is very natural and open, and the preamp section seems to be really good. I have an old Yamaha C-80 preamp that I hooked into it just to see if I could tell a difference. I couldn't.

It's hard to tell from Yamaha's website what is hidden behind the flip-down door - there are bass and treble controls, balance, subsonic-filter, and loudness controls, as well as a rec-out control.

The volume control as well as the input selector are both motorized. There is a "pure direct" button which bypasses all the preamp section, except for the volume control. The unit also has pre-out / main in's on it, so it can be used as a straight amplifier, preamp, or both.

One would be hard pressed to find a better integrated for less than $500.

Strength:

CLEAN, POWERFUL, Everything I wanted and nothing I didn't

Weakness:

Remote, buttons are impossible to use without looking at them.

This amp is exactly what I wanted. after having a prologic amp in my bedroom at school, I realized I never used my surround channels so rather than spend money on processing and amps I don't use (or a tuner, the radio stations here suck!) I decided to buy exactly what I used. This amp is so clean and so loud. It becomes painful to listen to because of the volume yet is still producing clean power at only a half turn. A great match for my power craving Paradigm Mini Monitors.

Strength:

Excellent sound, and a ton of grunt - also a very simple interface. I love it.

Weakness:

Bass level on the pre-outs drops when CD-Direct is turned off, but it makes CD's sound great on my sub.

I've seen a lot of amps in action, and short of selling a kidney, I don't think you'll find a better stereo amplifier.
This amplifier blows away any competition near it's price bracket.

I've had my AX-592 for almost 3 years now, and would never buy another amplifier. Dolby Digital is tempting me, though. I guess I'll just have to buy more AX-592's and run them from a pre-amp :)

Strength:

Lots of flexibility and control.

Weakness:

Upper midrange and highs are a bit harsh.

Recently moved and decided to downsize. Sold off most
of the big-ticket audio equipment and started looking
for an inexpensive Integrated amp. Based on the very
positive reviews at this site, decided to give the
Yamaha AX-592 amp a try. Bought a new unit at Good Guys
and hooked it up to my system. Did some casual listening
for the first 2-3 days to let the amp "settle in" and
stabilize. At this point, started to listen more
critically and found that while the bass was satisfying
(although slightly bloated), the upper midrange and highs
were not smooth. Female vocals, in particular, were
somewhat harsh. Tried different cables and interconnects
to no avail. Ended up setting the Midrange and Treble
controls on the Vandersteen 2CE speakers to the fully-
attenuated (-3db) position to make CD sound listenable,
but lacking detail. All listening was done in the CD
DIRECT and PURE DIRECT modes. Found that the non-Direct
mode had poor sound quality.

Perhaps I was expecting too much from this amp, having
owned and listened to much more expensive equipment.
Once you've listened to really good stuff, it's hard to
settle for less and ended up returning the AX-592 to
Good Guys. The search continues....

Strength:

After many years its sounds better and better.

Weakness:

Usually keep it in the CD Dierct mode

I use my Yamaha AX-592 to drive 5 pairs speakers in my home. It does a terrific job at driving a whole house system. It also sounds excellent driving a 3 way speaker system in my primary listening room made up of PSB alpha's and a PSB subsonic powered sub. This amp reproduces acoustic recordings as if they were live.

Strength:

Lots of Clean Power, functional design

Weakness:

none that I know of

Ever since I fried my old 1979 Sansui G5700 if been looking for something to replace it, an very difficult endeavour i assure you. After dubious flirtation with a 100 watt a side Gennexa Receiver I reminded myself that a box with some watts behind it does not a sound system make, so after i fried :) the Gennexa it was time to get serious. In comes the Yamaha AX-592, wow after listening to this baby I bought it home, best move i've made since the Sansui. I paired it up with some E-712 Vega's with a LW-12 Vega Sub and a dash of Yamaha CDC-765 CD player (still savin my sheckles for a tuner, new turntable, Equalizer and a DVD). I just love the system so far, the AX-592 being the heart of it. The long and short of it, great Amp, I'm a very happy customer.

I bought my Yamaha last year because I killed all my other amps from too much high volume. This amp has stood the tesr
LOts of power, good sound at high volume
I would recommend this type of amp to anyone.
