I bought this on Ebay a couple of years ago after starting to get interested in vintage hifi on the Vintage Knob web site http://www.thevintageknob.org

I have been into hifi for over 20 years since 1989 and have read the hifi mags in the UK and bought into the upgrade-itus and black and later silver boxes depending in the fashion. I believed the hype and spent a lot of money looking for that elusive sound. As I have grown older I have begun to question more, and the audio community on the internet has been great. I have also become fed up with looking at ugly hifi and want something that looks as good as it sounds. It seems that the era for quality and musicality is the 1970s with unsurpassed build quality and musical sound. Ok it may not be 'real hifi' as the mags would have us believe, but boy is it musical. I am suddenly interested in my music again.

This began with me using the Yamaha CR-1000 Receiver. This receiver is amazing full stop when compared to other hifi I have been using over the last 20years. I was immediately taken with the real power, weight, bass slam and energy. It might not be the last word in detail but it has a full and musical sound. The better the recording the more life like. Imaging is great, smooth sound not harsh or shrill.

I actually feel conned by my much newer equipments ratings when it comes to wattage, I have other 100w amps but they do not compare to the power from this receiver. I only have to take it 10 o'clock on the volume and it's loud. The weight of the base on my Mission 752 floor standers has been a revelation. It's not boomy or flabby base, but authoritative and with real slam and rhythm. I have tried various CD players I own and am looking forward to connecting my Yamaha YP-800 DD Turn Table once I have replaced the phono cable. I gather that the phono section is really good and can't wait.

My CR-1000 could probably benefit from a service and recap as it is over 30 years old, and I am trying to find a technician I can entrust it to.

I highly recommend this receiver, it looks great, sounds great, will probably sound even better after a service and a bargain compared to new equipment. I paid £135 for mine on ebay which is the cost for a decent interconnect or MM cartridge. If you can find one in good condition buy it, service it and hold on to it.

A wonderful amp that has not seen the kind of attention it deserves. I think that the cr-1000 has one of the nicest looks of all the vintage yamaha products. The most expensive yamaha integrated amp of its time and rightfully so. FM tuning and sound is superb, phono section is the best of any vintage piece that I've heard. Personally I like the cr-1000 over the cr-2020 if wattage isn't an issue. I've been using it with both a set of energy c-6 speakers and some vintage dynaco a-25's and a set of cerwin vega d-1s. The phono section also has 2 sets of inputs to allow mm and mc setups. The amp has ample power to disturb the neighborhood if you want without causing listener fatigue. The clean, clear yamaha sound is present but not sterile. The other features are, mono both left and right, reverse stereo, 2 aux inputs, fm muting in a 10-click step slider, variable loudness, high and low filter and a mic input which I've used to do some home recordings for a friend. The headphone amp section is really good too, you could use this amp as a recording setup.
All and all, a wonderful piece of vintage gear that you should be able to pick up for a steal. Very well worth a couple of hundred bucks, todays crap does not compare.
