Strength:

plenty of power and easy to set up. as much punch a speaker can handle with ease without distortion.

Weakness:

can tend to hiss a little whilst in dsp mode with the volume at full, no music playing at this time obviosly

a nice and easy to set up sound processor, i will be looking now for the digital equivilant in the near future and have no need nor desire to sell this one neither, this will end up in the family room. value for money, if you can pick one up under $300, you have got a steal.!!

Strength:

Everything

Weakness:

Small display and some features not functional without remote

I bought this unit new around 1992 and have had trouble free service from it to this day. It has great sound and features without having too many dsp modes to be able to enjoy. A great unit in stand-alone form and even better when using outboard amps from Luxman and Carver. It is used in conjunction with center, main, surround and dual subs, all from Klipsch. The only unit to equal or surpass it would be from Lexicon and that is the cornerstone of my newest system.

Strength:

Easy to use. On screen menu. Great remote able to operate any component. Enough power for comparable priced speakers.

Weakness:

Failed and needed to be fixed 3 years after I purchased it. Tends to run hot! Thiel 1.5s made it over heat!

Good power and sound for its day! Easy to set up and fun to use. A lot of sound fields that I never used after the first year.

Strength:

DSP Mode flexibility, pre-amp out/main-in for the front three channels, front effect, rear, and subwoofer line outs, binding posts for all speaker outputs, and the large number of inputs to accomodate a complete audio/video setup.

Weakness:

The main amplifier channels could use a bit more oomph for both movies and music, but they're adequate at 80 WPC for small-to-medium sized rooms. Of course, there are no digital inputs but there is a phono input (for me still a plus). A paltry 25 WPC for the rear channels is the biggest weakness of the A-1000.

In terms of today's product offerings this unit seems somewhat dated, but it has been reliable for nearly ten years and has aged gracefully, rather than become obsolete. Partnered with Yamaha's own DSP E-492 it has become Dolby-Digital/DTS/6-channel input compatible, though one has to manually switch between the two units and use different remotes. In addition the front effect channels can't be utilized when using the E-492--they do make a difference in various DSP movie and music modes. This was a state-of-the-art product at one time which can still be appreciated and even upgraded with the proper component pairing.
