Strength:

The best value-for-money, DTS/DD5.1 capable amp there is. Has pre-outs for all channels.

Weakness:

Surround speaker connects and a remote control that must have been invented by someone who was drunk.

I chose this amp because it is cheap! That is, for one which can do all the cinema formats including DTS and has pre-outs. It was important for me to be able to continue using my main stereo Myrydas to drive the main speakers.

I biwired my center speaker which was a real problem though, as the amp only has spring-clip connects for the centre and rear speakers. I had to bodge something together to effectively make a big cable into a small one. Not too clever. I was peaved because the main speaker terminals are binding posts but I wasn't using them (see above)!!!

In use, I can't complain at all about this amplifier. I am astounded by the way it responds to some of the more demanding DD 5.1 soundtracks although I haven't tried a DTS DVD yet.

As well as using only three of the six channels (I don't use a sub or the mains), I really underuse the amp in other ways too. I ignore all the DSP effects and don't use it to amplifiy anything other than TV. The point I'm getting to here is that, even though I use only some of its features, the £295 I paid was still cheap!!

So, for those of you who want to use it as their main amp for everything you'll get ten times the use from it as I do.

However, I would not be happy with the sound quality for, say, CD playback. I strictly keep my hi fi and my AV separate!

Strength:

Amazingly powerful with plenty of reserve in hand

Weakness:

Speaker cable connections

Probably the best purchase I have ever made, apart from my Rega Planar 3 turntable 17 years ago! I bought the unit second hand (first owner had it for only two weeks) but had done enough research before the time to know that this is what I'd want and what I'd want to stay with for a long time.

No problems driving my Missions, although they aren't too hard to drive anyway. Even my wife, knowing nothing about good sound said: "Now that's good sound!", so it should say something.

Solidly built, no platic feel to it at all. Pity about the remote's silver color. As for this monster, I have had no problems using it or to get it to now control the TV, DVD player, VCR. Just cannot get the satellite decoder to work from the remote. But then I like playing with remotes and knobs - to my wife's utter frustration...

Price & Performance

Weakness:

Speaker Connections for rear surrounds and no Digital Out

I have owned a Pro-Logic Amp for the last 3 years and found the Yamaha to be excellent in both aspects straight stereo and hi-fi so when I bought a DVD player I had no hesitation in going for the Yamaha 595a, although the DSP A1 has all the whistles & bells I have found the DSP modes to be very distracting and gimmicky apart from Enhanced which is bareable and as I already have a Tuner the RX was out of the running.
Power is more than sufficient for a medium sized room and the automatic input mode is really good, the ability to remember what mode you were in last is very handy as you don't have to rember to knock off the DSP mode when you are listening to hi-fi when listening to CD or Tuner for instance.

The unit has 6 channel inputs for future proofing which is also a bonus what more can I say it's a really good piece of equipment.

Strength:

Sound, inputs, outputs, price, external decoder inputs.

Weakness:

Speaker connectors for surroundspeakers, (power).

Had the DSP A2 for a couple of days for a tryout and it was perfect in all way except one, the price tag. Since I didn't think that I would ever use all the possibilities of the DSP A2 I felt that I should give the 595a a chance too.
I have now been using my 595a for almost a week, as I mostly listen to normal 2 channel music I see the HT functions as a bonus and the amp had to sound good as a normal stereo amp.

I know there is a Yamaha RX-V795aRDS but as a already own a tuner and think receivers in general suck it was no option for me. (the concept with a receiver is beyond me..)

I own a pair of NHT 2.5i and they demand somewhat high volume to perform their best and when doing that the display on the amp started to blink every time a bass tone was played. The volume was not un-normal I must point out. The NHT:s was bi-wired to the 595a.

As I previously owned a Yamaha AX-700 amp I decided to bi-amp the speakers. And now the sound is more than fantastic! I drive the bass with the old amp and the rest with the 595a, the bass is deep and tight and the sound from the mid and high is more detailed then ever, when listening to Enya the sound stage is breathtaking!

With this set-up I am more that pleased with the performance I got. Unfortunately I have no DTS capable DVD-player so I can't review that part. Dolby Pro Logic sounds excellent though. The next step will be a center speaker, a sub bass feels overkill with my current set-up and on top of that I live in a small apartment (neighbors!).

One drawback is that the remotes preprogrammed ir-codes didn't work with my Panasonic Prism W1 tv nor my Kendo videos (ok, I can understand the Kendos but the Panasonic should at least work). No problem with my Technics tape deck.

And not to forget, the infamous remote which I think is not as bad as some reviewers point out, I think it's pretty intuitive and got used to it almost at once.

Conclusion: A great amp (if you don't have demanding speakers) and lots of inputs and outputs that should make it a future safe investment and give you pleasure for years to come.

This product is an RX-V595a, not a DSP-595a. It is a great product and should be considered for those entering the home theater market and don't want to spend a fortune on a home theater set-up

Strength:

It's cheap!

Weakness:

Speakerconnectors for center/surround are of the cheap click kind.

For the money i paid for it (DM659,- = DFL 740,-) there is nothing better! Sound is great.(I hooked the amp up to a pair of B&W DM-2 (front), a pair of Philips FB 696 (surround) and a MBQuart QL 30 C (center)). I previously owned a Philips FR 732 receiver, and this Yamaha amp just blows it away. comes with an excellent remote control, which you can program for use with other equipment.

This is one of my best buys ever and I have bought and sold many audio and video equipment. I bought this to replace my previous Yamaha receiver which was one of their entry level products. I fell in love with their products ever since. And to jump from their entry level receiver to this giant-killer is quite a leap!!!! This beauty was Yamaha's flagship product before they introduced the A1.

When I bought this home theatre amp, DD5.1 had just come out. There were not many software that came encoded with DD5.1 either. But this one was promised to be future ready and man!!! is it!!! Okay, fine, DTS emerged soon afterwards, but who needs DTS anyway???? And how many LDs or DVDs can you get hold of that offers DTS???

The Yamaha DSPA 3090 has CD, LD, 2 tapes, DVD, tuner, 2 video and phono connections. It has both optical and coaxial digital inputs for CD, LD and DVD. And this came out in 1996!!!

The sound is tremendous. I was using Bose 2.2 with this and currently have Definitive Technology's Cinema 80 connected. I have not used it with real quality speakers yet (which is a temptation I have been resisting for quite some time due to the lack of space in my apartment), and I shiver at the thought of how rich it would sound if I did that. This is the amp that has tought me to listen to music and movies without turning the bass and treble knobs or even hitting the loudness button. It can give any product a run for all its worth, whether listen to music or enjoying home cinema. I can crank up the volume as much as I like and the sound does not distort a single bit. The amp can be connected to external power amps as well if you fancy that sort of thing.

Last year when I moved from Bangladesh to here in Dubai, I considered selling it off and getting a new amp. But my brothet talked me out of it. I realise now that it would have been a stupid stupid mistake.

I have just one complaint: the speaker connections are not banana plug compatible. This makes connecting cables quite difficult.

Although this product is now obsolete, if you can get your hands on one and if you are contemplating on upgrading to home theatre or your current AV reveiver then go for it with your eyes closed. You will not regret it a single bit.

I purchased the DSP-A595a a couple of weeks ago for $450 equiv. I initially was looking at the rx-v795 for the DTS at $700. I opted for the 595a which is DTS capable and has the the additional outputs the old 595 doesn't. I also purchased with it a Yamaha TX-492 tuner for $170. Not bad for separates. Well my fears about driving my old crown jewels (Magnepans MG-Ia's) were totally unfounded. I put aside my old Proton D-540(powerfull little amp) and even added a pair of Klipsch KSB 1.1 as rear speakers ($350). The 595a drives everything so effortlessly it's amazing. The sound is a bit brighter than that of the Proton but the bass is more solid. I love the DSP settings. The remote is as awkward and user unfriendly as they can get, however its preprogrammed settings work well enough so I have successfully retired my Philips cd, Panasonic VCR, Grundig Sat. decoder and SHARP TV remotes and uncluttered my coffee table. My only problem is balancing the front with the rear speakers because the Klipsch are very sensitive and put out a louder sound than the Magnepans. I 'll find the solution soon I hope. The 595a's manual is very good too. I hope to keep this Yamaha for twenty years, as long as my Maggies and my NAK tape deck. Thanks to all you guys who submit reviews. Reading carefully through your lines one can definately narrow the selection among the zillions of black boxes out there. I reserve one speaker for the perfect machine that costs less than $200 and give the rest to the 595a.
