I got the Deluxe model. It's a line stage controller with 5 inputs, two buffered tape loops and two outputs, one buffered and one passive. While the buffered output is good, the passive output defines the term "transparency". In the passive mode, the unit is sensitive to cable capacitance, however, too much series capacitance leading to slight hum or frequency response anomalies. Also, careful matching must be done between the signal sources and the power amplifier since the preamp itself does not provide any gain, even in the buffered mode. Is there difference between the standard version for $995 and the deluxe version for $1250? Definitely! |

This past week, I have gone ga-ga, and written a glowing review of Adcom's new preamp (the GFP-750), now it's a-month-and-a-half before buying time, only to hear McCormack's TLC-1 one more time. After doing so last night, there were some things that I heard before from this fine preamp that came back to me and did so rather hard. The TLC-1 is quite detailed first of all. In addition, the soundstage is very spacious and there is depth in spades. No matter whether it was vocals, or instruments, it was easy to pick apart the whole performance in the soundstage. This was using the "buffered" outputs on the TLC-1 with no external supply. The bass response wasn't bad either. I guess the next time, I'll take "Stereophile's" review with a grain of salt. The sound described above is the sound that I'm after. |

I have been gradually upgradeing my system over the past year and my latest upgrade is a McCormack TLC-1 Deluxe pre-amp. The McCormack is replacing a GTP-350, by Adcom. Allthough this pre-amp is Adcoms least expensive unit it isnt bad considering what it cost,($400.00). However their is no comparison between the two. The McCormack should be and IS a much better pre-amp. Never have I heard music reproduced more faithfully in my present system, evrything sounds crystal clear ie., transparent and VERY lifelike. Coupled with a McCormack POWER DRIVE DNA 0.5 Deluxe, I couldnt ask for more. I highly recomend these two components! They are a STEAL for their price, $1795.00 (amp), $1395.00 (pre-amp). |
