I am a vintage receiver collector. I have a Sansui G7500, McIntosh 4100, Marantz 2325, Fisher 500C and the Concept 16.5. I have had the 16.5 for about 4 years now. From my listening experience comparing all these highly regarded receivers I can attest that the 16.5 is undoubtedly the best of all! The sound quality outperforms all the others I have. It is fantastic! Not to mention it has huge power. I recommend anyone considering purchasing one to go for it. You won’t regret it. You won’t be buying mine though! Lol

I don’t see any weakness with the 16.5. Some may feel the appearance somewhat bland but I don’t.

The 16.5 was the best analog reciever made. I traded a car for one when I worked for Pacific Stereo in 1981. This stereo kicked butt. The bass is powerful . This needs speakers that can handle hi power bass. It has 165 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 250 watts per channel at 4 ohms. I haven't used my 16.5 in 15 + years. I'm waiting to buy some Bose 901 speakers

There is no weakness on this reciever. I quit using mine because I wanted surround sound and I the speakers for it were to big for my front room.

I picked-up my Concept 16.5 when I owned a Pawnshop. I bought it outright for $75 and was concerned that I was buying a Terd. I had an old Marantz 2235 in the garage with two old Marantz Tar-Canvas 2-ways and another pair of Advent Utilities. I live in a mountain community which is a basically a suspended valley. TV and FM struggle to get-in, but I am on a slope and have a roof-mounted YAGI Antenna aimed south. I run the antenna through multiple amps and splitters. The garage is on the tail end of the system. Once I powered it up and checked FM I wet myself! It was able to differentiate between strong signals and manage to capture the adjacent weaker effortlessly. I have a Marantz 2130 Tuner, Marantz 2500, 4400, Pioneer SX-1050 and SX-1250 and this guy was right up there with the 2130 and the Pioneers. The sound, to me, is neutral. It's just the way I like it! This unit has had zero service or restoration and it is a workhorse while I'm out in the driveway or garage washing cars, dirt bikes or my truck or while doing repairs or tidying-up in my man cave. For $75 I think I scored!

I can't say anything bad other than the usual old-aged equipment with noisy controls, etc. This unit sits for months at a time unused, so it's usually full of scratches and such when I first fire-it-up and turn knobs to select source, channel, etc.

I have a 2.5 concept tuner/'amp and also a 4.5 there both great great bass and midrange with tons of headroom...I recently bid on a 16.5 concept.........the monster 160 watts rms per channel but had to stop my bidding at 1120.00 final bid was 1568.00 or so ? get one of these if you can! you dont see these often.....they are rated as the best vintage non tube unit God willing some day I will own one.....happy searching...ron p.

This review is for the Concept 11.0, which is the model just below the 16.5 in the second generation of Pacific Stereo components. It puts out 110 wpc rms. From the outside they look almost the same. Inside, the 11.0 has a single massive transformer (the beast weighs in at 50 pounds), where the 16.5 is a dual-mono design. I haven't heard the 16.5 so I can't compare it, but the 11.0 is absolutely fantastic. I've had mine about 6 months and it's never been recapped or refurbished. It has replaced (temporarily) a rebuilt Kenwood 600 Supreme and McIntosh MR74 tuner. The Concept is remarkably similar in sound to the Supreme, quite neutral. The tuner is outstanding, the best I've encountered in a receiver. And after all these years, the tuner alignment is still spot on!

Though I don't often use tone controls, I appreciate the Concept's implementation. Instead of the typical three control Bass-Mid-Treble arrangement the Concept has Bass, Mid-Bass, Mid-Treble, and Treble. This allows more tweaking of the midrange, which is where we do most of our listening, particularly to the human voice.

Based on this experience I would heartily recommend trying any offering in the Concept receiver line.
