I use one of these in the office. No complaints, especially for the money. Does not look or sound as if it is built down to a price, although I'm sure it is. I use it with a JVC Cassette Deck and JVC 5CD Changer. Appreciate the Computer Link function, which makes these two non-remote controlled JVC sources R/C controlled from the receivers remote. Also switches input automatically on the receiver, whenever a CD or cassette is played. Also starts cassette recording (from record-pause mode) when you play a CD. Simple and effective. |

Strength:
Inexpensive. Reliable. Tuner can tune in most stations.
Weakness:
No on/off on remote. Mediocre sound. I bought this for $99 and got what I expected. The receiver sounds OK, but doesn't sound great. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who wants to play music loudly. It will distort at higher volumes. The remote doesn't turn the receiver on and off. What moron decided to omit this feature? If I had known I couldn't turn the receiver on and off with the remote, I never would have purchased it. Similar Products Used: JVC, Marantz, Pioneer, Sony |

This receiver has long been discontinued by JVC but was common 4 years ago when I bought it in order to have remote-controlled sound. I'm posting this in case someone runs across this receiver used and whether it's worth picking up. If you buy this receiver now it should be very cheap (well below $100) and at this price worth picking up to use with JVC components so long as you're not worried about surround sound. This receiver has provided rock-solid service in the four years since I bought it. I think its sound is more listenable than many receivers of the "Japanese" flavor including a couple of pricier receivers from JVC to which I've compared it over the years. I purchased it along with a couple of other (also discontinued) JVC components (cassette deck and CD player) so I could have a remoted-controlled system. As a backroom system combined with inexpensive speakers (I use the Yamaha 636s) a combo such as this gives MUCH better sound than all-in-one minisystems that sell for several hundred dollars. I've also used this receiver as a make-shift remote-controlled "pre-amp" using a Y-cable (1/4" headphone plug to dual RCA plugs) to run the JVC headphone output to an old BK ST-140 power amp - the JVC remote controls the headphone output volume as well as all the components. It's not purist, but it sure beats spending several hundred dollars for a high-end preamp. Caution: This receiver is equipped with version 1 of compu-link not compulink2, and lacks some compulink 2 functions such as controlling power-on/off for the receiver and the linked components. Also, the remote was designed for single-play CD players, not changers, and wonn't let you switch between CDs in a JVC changer. |
