Strength:

smooth clean power...tube like warmth...compares nicely to the older counterpoint tube gear.

Weakness:

no surround sound etc....but who cares

I bought this unit back in 1990 or so in seattle and paired it with speakerlab dipole radiator speakers and a bandpass sub box. I bought it at a time when everyone was buying Nak or Carver etc. It seems funny but i knew that it was so heavy it had to be good. Ive sold off much of that old gear but i still have the R117. I now play it with two ads speakers and the same sub box. Its as sweet as ever :) However, once you turn it past about 10 oclock...the sound starts to break up....honestly though i never seem to need more than about 9 oclock in volume...so someday ill get it fixed. Like my 1992 klein attitude mountain bike....one more purchase i will never regret mike

Strength:

Wonderful sound for next to nothing.

Weakness:

Getting very old - eventually it will die I guess.

Picked up an R115 for $200 Canadian (I think that works out to about a buck and a half US). I have it connected to a pair of PSB Stratus Bronze speakers and the combination really works for chamber music and jazz. Very warm, natural sound with power to spare. Maybe I am just really cheap, but I can't imagine spending huge bucks on new equipment when there deals like this to be had.

Strength:

reliable, powerful, smooth, clear and detail.

Weakness:

none to this point.

I just found out about this website and I thought I could share some of my opinions with you and I wish that I knew about this website earlier. I bought this R-117 about 8 yrs ago (I''m not quite sure) and I had no problem at all. Its sound is so powerful and truly warm and clear. After I bought it, I thought it might be in the middle of high-end and average class audio, but I was so impressed with its sound. I had listened to a pair of Nad power amp./pre-amp combo at my cousin''s house hooking up to the same Polk speakers just as I do, but I do believe the Luxman was even better than that. I can hear all the details in the back soudstage with the singer standing right in front of me. I''m using it with my Thorens turntable/ PioneerCD player and I found out that I won''t ever change my mind in changing the system if I don''t have more than couple thousands of $ to go to a real high-end system, and in fact, I can''t afford it now. Frankly speaking, it''s the best receiver in its range and no equalizer needed to make better sound. It surely can beat Harman Kardon, Carver, Nad (average class), and all low classes as Kenwood, Yamaha, Sony...et. Finally, I hope you can find my review helpful in selecting a good sound for your system without "give it a try" on your hard earned $ for your pleasure.

Strength:

I like the direct stream option for CD output, that lets you bypass all of the other electronic pathways in the box for a more direct, pure output from the CD to the speakers...

Weakness:

I understand that it can be a little pricey to repair since there is so much going on inside...

When I was looking to update my system from my original ''70''s college days, I wanted to do so without going broke, since my kids are now all in college. Picked up the R117 used in 2000 and I must say that I am thrilled with it''s performance. I have coupled it with a Nakamichi deck, a Rotel 5 disc changer and some Infinity speakers to create a very nice ensemble for sound. The only piece that I retained from the ''old'' set-up was my Thorens TD160C turntable just because...

Strength:

First rate audiophile quality sound & construction, Able to drive low impedance speakers with ease. Pre-out jacks, can be used as a stand alone amp.

Weakness:

NONE

I owned this receiver for 10+ years and never grew tired of the warm tube-like sound it produced. Even though it is a classic I don't think you would be able to duplicate the sound and quality without spending thousands of dollars in todays market.
Highly recomended if you can find one.

Still looking....

I actually have a Luxman R115, the 70W/CH little brother of the R117.

Bought this unit in 1991, it was a year old and traded in on Adcom seperates. Have run it continuously since then, the only problem has been a dirty balance pot that cause hissing in certain positions. A $35 service at a former Luxman shop resulted in a full cleaning, and a good as new unit.

This unit is quiet, accurate, and powerful I ran it with Bose Acoustimass in a very small apartment, and upgraded a year later to a pair of Polk LS70s that I still have. The bass is tight, the sound very easy to listen to. Source has been a Rotel 855 CD until last year, and now a Sony CDP-80ES.

I have just purchased a Sony STR-V333ES to replace the unit, with mixed feelings. I love the Luxman, it is pure simplicity to use (the Sony is more like a PC), but home theater is too compelling, with the advent of inexpensive DVDs and DVD rentals. Haven't decided if I'll sell the Luxman or hang on to it as a backup, I don't see any modern receivers with this kind of quality.

If you are looking for a basic receiver with separates sound quality, don't pass up a used example from this family of receivers.

My review is for the R-115 which is the 70wpc version of this receiver. Supposedly the 113,115 and 117 were the same with only a difference in its power rating, 35,70,and 140 wpc respectively.
I bought my R-115 in 1989 after my Harmon Kardon 730 lost a channel. Figuring it was too old to fix (10 yrs old) I bought the Luxman. It was supposedly one of the best that my local audio store carried. At that time I was running original large Advent speakers, Dual turntable with Ortafon cartridge, Teac 3 head tape deck and Magnavox cdb650 cd player. I brought home the Luxman and hooked it up with great expectation. Although the Luxman had more power and better specs it didn't sound as good. The bass line was more of a thump than clean and smooth. It lacked the body of my 45wpc Harmon Kardon. After searching for speakers thinking this might solve my problem I became convinced by an Audiophile that my problem was not my speakers but my amp. I was never satisfied with this components sound quality. I sold the Luxman and took my HK730 to Watkin's Stereo in Kingsport,TN and spent about $80.00 to get it fixed. Though I've bought other equipment since then, I still have the HK730. Ive found very little that sounds as good. I was never satisfied with the Luxman R-115. It was OK but certainly not a high quality sounding piece of equipment.

I got the receiver from a friend and boy! I was blown away! Eventhough it's a really old model, it really brings out the richness of Luxman. I truly recommend the R-117 for those seeking an older receiver with a warm, responsive and clear overall tonality.

I have the r-113 and since I have always used Klipsch speakers which are very effcient(my new pair are 100 db) the combo is excelent! I just bought a NAD T761 and I have only had it for one week but I am dissapointed! The Lux has only 35 watts and 18 amps the t761 has 80 watts and 45 amps but the Lux blow away the t761!! The t761 soundstage is about 25 feet behind the speakers but with the Lux's soundstage it envelops you into the music and with the Klipsch's forte to sound live I was in heaven, until I bought the t761. If you are looking for just a stereo receiver for your bedroom or whereever grab a 113, 115, 117 and you'll be in heaven!
