This was my dad's prized unit. He bought it new (I'm guessing it was about 1977) and by then it was already an older model but the build quality is second to none (see 70's Marantz ad featuring this model surviving a house fire and then a 10-20 foot drop from the wrecking crane 100% intact. Unbelievable. I literally grew up listening to this one. At 14-15 years of age, when I first got into The Doors and Led Zeppelin, it was this receiver casting it's spell in my still developing brain. Think about it, this receiver sold for up to $600 new back in the mid-70's. Do any of you people know how much that is in today's $$!! That was far beyond the price range of the average consumer back then because it was built to please the most discriminating audiophiles, yet you didn't exactly have to be rich to afford it (see Macintosh, did I spell it right? No? Well, probably because I don't have one!) Thanks to my vintage receiver collecting hobby, I now have many others to readily compare it to. For you number obsessed people, here are the most notable: 70wpc RMS (definitely powerful but far from being monsterous), THD .3% (not bad at all), but here's the kicker, powerband width 7hz-50kz - incredible! By far, I think, the widest of any vintage Marantz, (most are only 20hz-20kz). I guess I'm just trying to explain in numbers why this receiver sounds so freakin' good. While it's true that numbers explain a lot, they never tell the whole story. While far from being the most powerful, or lowest distortion, or widest frequency response, it is still the most beautiful sounding receiver I've ever heard (and believe me, I've heard a lot). No, I haven't heard a Mac yet, but I believe the emperor wears no clothes. A lady at a music store once asked me, "Have you heard a Macintosh? Well, my dad swears by them." And I'm thinking your dad must have an awful lot of disposable income. Because I'll bet my money that this Marantz can easily hold it's own against any Macintosh for pure sound quality, in spite of what the hoighty-toighty stereo crowd may tell you, and you don't have to spend a small fortune on it, either. I once talked to a nose-in-the-air stereo technician at a local high-end stereo store who told me that Marantz was made by Macintosh! Marantz's were like Mac's for the masses. I thought, oh my gosh, he's talking about me! I'm just one of the masses who can't afford a Mac, so I have to "settle" for a Marantz! He even went so far as to say they didn't even sound that good! I wondered what world he was living in. In the meantime I'm holding onto my Marantz's, because "settling" has never sounded sweeter! |

its amazing that this still sounds better than new receivers, anyway... my dad bought this new when he was in the army in europe... with a pair of imperial 7's.. i never heard it with those but he said it sounded amazing, i wish i woudl've... we still have them but they've rotted out over time, we now have a bose acoustimass, he doesn't listen to it much anymore and i get the most use out of it... i respect the receiver a lot, (as weird as that sounds) its still perfect, never needed to be serviced, everything still lights up perfect (some lights are a little dim)... eventually i hope to have this reciever and get some tower speakers for it when i move out. |

I bought a 2270 three years ago and just had it completely recapped (replacement of all electrolytic capacitors). These do wear out, and as my receiver is now 40 years old it was time to give it a makeover.

i found my marantz 2270 at my local thrift store. i had never heard of marantz, but i knew this thing was an old tube recciver. it was heavy as hell. my girlfriend thought i was crazy for spending 14.00 for it. i was pretty sure it wasnt going to work,so it went under my bed for a couple of months. then one day when i was bored i un hooked my current jvc recciver and put the 2270 in its place.all the lights came on and it worked perfectley. i was amazed how good this thing sounded. now i use it with a cd player and it pushes a pair of bose towers. i wont be getting rid of it any time soon. |

I picked this up at a yard sale and took it in to be cleaned and serviced before using it. Well let me tell you this receiver is everything people say it is and then some. I bought a new Denon just before I found this and have not used it since! Anyone want to buy a new Denon? I bought this from the original owner and love this thing, no way I could go back to a newer unit. If you ever get a chance to buy one of these, do it. You will not regret it at all. I have since added a Marantz model 22 to my collection, but the 2270 blows it away. Excellent piece of classic audio equipment, bar none! |

Strength:
Round warm tone.
Weakness:
Hard to find a woking unit that still works - if you clean the pots with electric cleaner from radio shack, you might be able to get rid of static.
Warm is the word that comes to mind. Also, the sound is smooth, and the notes are round. It's satisfying sound. Customer Service Too old for that - you might be able to find on the internet a place that will service it. Similar Products Used: Quad 405ii |

Strength:
Nice power, nice imaging, three dimensional sound. Built like a battleship
Weakness:
Periodically will need FM alignment, a few bulbs here and there As described in many reviews the sound of this receiver is legendary. And do you know why. Marantz, Pioneer, and Macintosh are well known for legendary tube amplifiers. I have a theory that there were some capacitors leftover from the 60's vintage tube amplifiers that were used in the early transistor products, namely the 22__ series which includes the 2270. Polypropylene capacitors sound the best and there were plenty of polypropylene capacitors used in the vintage 2270, particularly in the phono section. The capacitors distortion is measured by electrical engineering parameters and the polypropylene capacitors are the most expensive but have the least distortion. The end result is extremely accurate imaging, very warm sound. This gives rise to the "tube sound". Capacitor distortion will distort the imaging, giving rise to a 2 dimensional sound without depth. Also capacitor distortion gives rise to a metallic sound. |

Strength:
NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT FOR THE PRICE, !! PROVIDED IT IS SERVICED!!
Weakness:
STILL HAS THAT SOLID-STATE HARSHNESS / GRAIN (WHATEVER ELSE YOU CALL IT) - YOU WILL HAVE TO SPEND 12 K+ $$$ TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE THAT FROM YOUR SS SYSTEM. THIS MEANS LISTENING FATIGUE IN THE LONG RUN AT AVERAGE TO HIGH VOLUME. TUBES LOVERS KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
