NAD 7240PE Receivers

NAD 7240PE Receivers

DESCRIPTION

The 7240PE receiver consists of the 3240PE integrated amplifier, with its vast reserves of clean, solid power for the the wide dynamic range of modern recordings, plus an exceptionally sensitive digital tuner. While the 7240PE is rated at 40 watts/channel of steady-state power, its +6 dB of IHF dynamic headroom means that its dynamic power for musical transients exceeds 160 watts/channel at 8 ohms and 200 watts/channel at 4 or 2 ohms.

Strength:

Great sound regardless of its RMS rating (as far as it's running).
Good looking design, inside and out.

Weakness:

Flimsy reliability, just like a 1990s' American Car.
It won't last long!

I've enjoyed this machine a while. A couple of years ago, radio went out. I got it serviced at a NAD service center, costing $120~130 back then. Recently it began to develop serious channel unbalance. Basically preamp part is dying out! Today, Tape channel was gone, officially becoming totally crippled. It seems to me that power part is still alive although a slight noise is noticeable on the left channel when the volume is turned way up. This machine looks great and seems to be designed decently inside and out, but obviously the electronic parts used on the circuits are not quality parts, at least it's not built to last. A great initial quality winner, but won't last. Do not expect this machine will last like a Japanese car. Good start, but soon to be ceased. I am disappointed.

Strength:

Warm sound

Weakness:

Design and build quality

It's a warm sounding receiver, reception is ok as well, only the build quality of this product is really crappy with no protection against short circuit, also the lay out of the p.c.b is messy and a poor phono stage with a cheap op amp.
I advice to look to other brands for build quality such as Onkyo or Harman or Rotel.

Strength:

Ability to handle low impedence loads. Sound quality, power, ease of use, duribility, phonostage, awesome receiver

Weakness:

No remote

I have had this receiver for 11 years and it still sounds wonderful. It has plenty of juice to handle dynamics and most volume levels you throw at it. Nice sensitive tuner section too - pulls in a ton of stations consistently regardless of the type and style of antenna used. Quiet phonostage as well - sweet. It is rated at 40WPC/8Ohms, but it handled loud and dynamic music MUCH better than a Sony 100WPC/8Ohm receiver. If you see one used grab it quick.

Strength:

compact size, pre/main amp jacks, clean looks, quiet, easy to operate, well laid out rear panel, gold(?) plated jacks

Weakness:

tuner buttons fail, volume pot noisy, limited tuner presets, not tone circuit by-bass

Bought it blown for $10, fixed the outputs for under $20, and used it continuously for 3 years without blowing. Still can't figure Adam (above) trading in a Dynakit pair for it--send them this way next time! It serves well enough as a tuner/control unit and midrange driver in a 3-way system using the amp takeoffs. It seems stable enough, even after shorting the outputs briefly a couple of times. The tuner does well enough in a fringe area. If it ever blows on my watch I will fix it for sure. Have not tried with phono but will stick to the Dyna PAS-3 for that. Would pay as much $100 for a clean one but no more. These reviews are so subjective!

Simple, easy to operate, even my girl friend know how to operate it by herself ... =p Impressive sound and great value $$$. Driven with Polk Audio RT5 along with Jamo SW200II using Carver SD/A-410, it produced an exceptional sound. NAD 7240PE ... I give you two thumbs up ... = )

dynamic power, great sound, affordable

my dad bough this for 75 bucks back in the 80's and i have been using it scince 1995. the sound is awsome for the price, you cant beat the quality of this product. its rock solid, but after 10 yrs its starting to show, the volume knob needs cleaning. i am using a pair of home-made speakers for this whic have 2 6 1/2" woofers and 3 inch titanium dome tweeterz, sounds incredible, way better than my yamaha. plays louder too considering its only 40 wpc and my yamaha is 100. has awsome dynamics and is a great buy. drives most difficult loads w/ ease. . .can get quite hot though. i recently took the cover off mine and got all the dust out with that air in a can stuff made for your computer.

Strength:

Amazing clarity and depth. Powerful. Long-lasting and high-quality. Best $$$ value.

Weakness:

No remote.

This was my second receiver, purchased when I was 18 back in 1989. I had saved up some bucks to replace my Onkyo (gift from father when I was much younger) and I was looking at receivers with all the trimming and gadgets. A friend with good taste in gear took me to a local high-end shop and the salesman were very patient (Audio/Video Systems in Charlotte, NC) and showed me everything. They may have not known I had any money to spend (I was young!) - but they earned my business, and as a result I've been a long term customer ever since.

That said - this receiver is still with me to this day. Its been with me to college, all my apartments after college... and it still goes strong. This is the best receiver for the $$$ - and I've never heard anything better in the same price range. Unfortunately - the newer NAD stuff isn't as good... and my next purchase will probably be an Arcam. However - this unit will have to *die* before I replace it. It's been great, and I highly recommend a used one (but not mine!) for anyone with good taste and low funds. With the addition of a C520 CD player this week - I have all NAD gear for the first time). I highly recommend this brand to people willing to give up the frills (and unfortunately, sometimes build quality) to get real audiophile sound.
