    Strength:

Amazing clarity, excellent sonic characteristics, lots of depth

    Weakness:

    none so far

I purchased this unit to replace a 25 year old Advent 300 receiver in my office system. This is just a bookshelf system with small JS Audio speakers, driven by the CD player in my computer. I didn't need top quality, but didn't want anything too lame. I trust the folks at Audio Nexus (Summit, NJ) completely, and they suggested the NAD C740.
Well, I expected it to sound better than my old Advent, but not this much better. Even playing in my cheap computer CD ROM transport, music CDs are revealing depth and detail that I never knew was there. Stereo separation is much more pronounced. Quite amazing. And the infrared remote is able to work very close to the unit, and very off-axis. I'm surpised it functions at this angle. It also has little rubber feet, so it can sit on my desk like a control panel. Very handy.
But the main thing is the sound. Unless you're a super-high end audiophile, accustomed to $20,000 systems and better, you will be very happy with this unit. I'm actually tempted to move this receiver into my living room, where my serious listening system is, to replace my Adcom components. It's that good.

    Strength:

    Great Sound!

    Weakness:

    see below

As previously reviewed, this receiver sounds great - botom line. This was my first 'quality amp/receiver' and I was very impressed by the difference in sound quality. In the store, I listened to lower priced Yamnahas and Denons, but the NAD blew them out of the water. I have 2 points to add.
First, the C-740 now comes with a switched power outlet so that you can plug in your CD player or something else and control the power with the C-740's power on/off. Second, all the inputs are high-level inputs meaning you can't plug in a turntable directly unless it has a built-in pre-amp. Although this is probably the norm nowadays on mid to high end stereo amps and receivers, it was a suprise to me when I got home and went to plug in my old TT!!!
