Strength:
Clean sound, Lots of outputs, Simple, lots of outputs.
Weakness:
Could use a sub out, none really other that that After having used bookshelf systems and several other receivers Ive really started to love music. I wanted something that would provide me with good power and a clean sound. I found this on a saturday trip to circuit city and was completely impressed. I went home did my research, went back the next weekend and bought it. I really suggest this unit to anyone that wants great sound without the big pricetag. Especially if you are building a first component system or wanting a pure stereo setup. Similar Products Used: bookshelfs, other receivers. |

Strength:
Great strong sound, Lots of clean power, good amount of hookups, Very clean look. Stays cool compared to my denon that died.
Weakness:
no sub out, spring clips(dont effect sound or anything else though) This receiver produces a good neutral sound. I am very happy with the way it drove my c-3's. 12 gauge wire was a little tricky to get in the clips however I wouldnt call the use of clips a real negative being that most receivers used to use clips, marantz, sansui, etc and it was considered a standard. If you pair this receiver with a simple Equalizer you can get some really amazing sound out of it. Well worth the money if you are into Similar Products Used: Denon 685, Marantz, Sansui, Yamaha, etc... |

Strength:
Plenty of Crisp clean power,
Weakness:
none really in the first month and a half Good depth to the sound produced, Not as warm as the vintage marantz my dad uses in his house. It has a much better sound than my pioneer VSX-D412K home theater system. I bought this because I wanted pure a pure stereo setup to play all of the music on my cds and computer. I couldnt be more pleased, I just wish however they had used something better than spring clips for the speakers even though it doesnt seem to have any real effect. Strength:
Great looks, priced well.
Weakness:
Sound, and the ever famous scratchy volume control. This receiver lacks in many areas, mainly sound quality, I've used it with Magnepan SMGa speakers, Paradigms and Mirages, now these speakers SING when hooked up to a classic Sansui 9090, great base, crystal highs, an all around warm sound, but hooked up to the TX-8511 they sound harsh, lack bass response, and the highs? well not worth mentioning. I say spend a few dollars more and check out the Rotel line of audio products Similar Products Used: NAD,Rotel and Sansui |

Strength:
Range, power, bass, PRICE
Weakness:
Remote control is bare-bones Phenomenal. I originally purchased a Sony 695 and was profoundly disappointed with the sound quality and the lack of phono input. For $70 more, I did my research and purchased this Onkyo receiver at Circuit City. I basically sat with my jaw hung open as I listened for the first time to records and CD's that came alive like never before. This is an outstanding receiver. The highs and lows are vivid, and the bass is hearty. The 100w/channel power has some muscle behind it, so don't be afraid to pay for a stereo-only receiver that rocks. I ran "The Two Towers" through its two channel format, which was a more than adequate sound experience, so I didn't feel like I was missing out on the "home theatre" craze. I highly recommend it for the price and performance. Similar Products Used: Sony, Technics, Pioneer |

Strength:
Audio Delay Protects Speakers Clear, crisp, realistic sound Doesn't heat up like my old Technics
Weakness:
Spring clip speaker connectors -no banana plug- My stereo rack lost it's receiver a Technics SU-G90 which I really never liked(excessive heat, dull bland sound & signal spikes that destroyed 2 sets of JBL speakers on the right channel). After reading reviews about the ONKYO TX8511, I bougth it at Circuit City to try out with my home accoustics (JBL N38II Speakers): WOW!!! Night and Day difference. Finally found all the beautiful music I'd been missing out on. If you want a simple stereo receiver without the HT 7.1 mumbo jumbo but crisp clear sound buy this receiver. You won't regrete it. Strength:
Deep bass, power delivery, good sound in almost every aspect, good lookin, price.
Weakness:
image and soundstage are average This receiver is really good for it´s price, it delivers very little coloration, you can hear in some good records the deepness of the music, although it has good image and soundstage at this level it isn´t the best, I think nad c350 is better in almost everything except power delivery. I used it to drive some B&W cm2 and a polk sub until I got a nad c370 which is great but at twice the price. But the onkyo is a great product, defeats almost all at this price range (sony, panasonica, technics, yamaha etc) Similar Products Used: technics, jvc, nad, denon, arcam. |

Strength:
great sound, well built, can handle and likes abuse :-)
Weakness:
scratchy noise when volume is adjusted....but it's not that big of a deal really...i go for the music :-) I got this receiver as a high school graduation present from my parents. i hafta say that this thing RULES!!!!! I'd never even heard of onkyo before i got this receiver. I have a pair of AR-4x's hooked up to them (40-some year old speakers..hehehe) and i have a GREAT setup. the receiver is awesome..iv'e never had it up past half volume, and actually, it blew the tweeter in my right speaker. I turned the bass up one day, turned the volume up, and almost blew the woofer too....oops! having this thing at half volume busts my ear drums...most of the time i dont have it up any louder than 1/4. i love the vents, man when this thing is cranked it makes HEAT!!!!!!! awesome receiver...go buy it. Similar Products Used: none, this is the first receiver i've ever owned. |

Strength:
Fantastic sound, clean and simple front panel controls, ability to drive low impedance speakers without effort
Weakness:
Weak tuner, plugging in headphones does not mute speaker output This is a very good stereo receiver for the money. I use it as a bedroom system where I have my CD player and Dell laptop hooked up to it. I run it through a Cambridge Soundworks New Ensemble II system and the sound is very crisp and clear. I can play it at really loud volumes without having it sound like it's straining. It could use more auxiliary inputs, however, and the the tuner is pretty weak. My $10 GE clock radio has no problems pulling in AM stations but this receiver can't, no matter how hard I orient its antenna. Similar Products Used: Non-ES Sony receivers, Denon stereo receivers |

Strength:
power. theres a lot of that. more than enough connecters for what i need. 20-20k Hz rms. no other 2 channel amp i found can do that. runs at 2-4-8 ohms with out a problem.
Weakness:
wish there was a sub pre-amp out. other than that theres nothing. Wow. The power is great. i have polk audio rt35i with an old dbx 15 inch unpowered dvc sub run in parallel. thats about 3-4 ohms. still can't play it at full power or the polks will blow up and that would be the end of them. the bass is amazing just turn on the STC. i would recommend this to anyone. i almost got the model lower but since they did have that for weeks on end i got this one. and there are no regrets. Similar Products Used: well one shelf system a panasonic ak-25. i didn't know what i was missing. |
