This has been and still is an excellent reciever for the money. I have had two of them and the one i still have rocks my bose 301's with ease. Everytime i go in my basement to piddle or work on my mustang i crank it up with amazement of how good it still sounds! It mite go out tomorrow but it has never had a hicup. It is perfect for just two channels, especially for its age.

Well first of all this an excellent entry level unit. Disregard some of the negative comments you may see on this review, like I said it is an entry level. If you are looking for 2 channel stereo enjoyment, with clean crisp sound for under 350 retail, " back in 95",,,,, this is an excellent choice. The TX-V940 has gobs of power, as well as great ergonomics. I am anticipating delivery of a replacement for my old one I sold years ago, in a bind, from a reputable seller on eBay. I have powered numerous combinations of mid level speakers, my last being a clean pair of DEFINITIVE TECHNOLOGY BP 8s. The TX V940 had plenty of power to push them very hard, with minimal to no distortion levels. I also powered a pair of cerwin Vega 12in su woowers, which could also be driven cleanly Untill the voice coils were smacking the magnets with intense cone throw movement. For the money, it is a solid unit. Large transformer, quality heatsinks, and large capacitors. For the money, I would take the Pepsi challange with units boasting twice their cost. No this isnt a top line marantz, or a carver seperate with coil frying amperage, it is a 350 dollar great quality entery level 2 channel stereo receiver with enough clean power to damage a good set of tower speakers. Highly recommend this unit if u can find one new or most likely used, on a budget

I bought this receiver in 1994 and was charged nearly $100 over MSRP (this was before I started doing my homework). I actually had two. The first one lost the front panel display due to a power surge, but they were good on that at least and replaced it. The sound of this unit was clean, and a little cold as well. Even after burn in it was cold and hard sounding. I lived with it for a few years but when I got my '77 Marantz 2220B that was it. I did use the Onkyo off and on for a few more years but it is now seeing duty in my dad's living room and I have gone tube. The Onkyo has developed a problem where you have to crank the volume to get any sound out of it. Problem with either the contacts or control. So in closing, this unit wasn't worth what I paid for it and even if I didn't get ripped it wasn't worth losing a Pioneer SX3600 reciever... I'm still kicking myself over that one.
