Strength:

Power, Very good distortion rating, Component Vid+S-vid switching, assignable inputs, B speaker switch, Enhanced Pro logic mode

Weakness:

I will say Pro logic II, (it will be on the model released next fall), but I have heard PL II and think that it is pointless.....Enhanced Pro Logic (A yamaha DSP setting) simulates the side speaker effect and gives better surround for two channel sources in my opinion.

My system is this....
5460 receiver
M+K MX 105 Sub
JBL S center
JBL S 36 (front)
JBL S 26 (rear)

This system is exactly what I was looking for, and one of the keys to its clarity and power is obviously this receiver. If you shop around and look at the actual specs of the Denon, Onkyo, and Yamahas you will see that in the same price range yamahas come out favorably. (Please note...."actual specs" does not mean listen to the pointless employees at circut city or something.) Research it for yourself on the websites of the manufacturers and they will give you the specs. Great receiver in my opinion.

Strength:

Great Price with bundle. Easy to use, excellent power, intelligent and plenty of connections.

Weakness:

None really, not super high end.

I bought this unit after researching Best Buy bundle on audioreview. Got the whole package with NSP1 and 10" JBL Sub. I investigated Sony, but several folks and reviews gave this model high praise.

I am no audiophile, but I am very happy with the sound and quality of the 5460. It was simple to hook up, took a morning after running some late night cable. I am confident that this combined unit will server me well for years to come.

The 5460 has a classic chassis and display.

Go ahead and pick one up, you can spend a ton more and in my opinion not know the difference.

Strength:

Excellent sound. Plenty of inputs.

Weakness:

Video switching on composite inputs is noisy.

My 9 year old Sony STR-990 got hit by lightning so I had to replace it. When I was shopping for the replacement, I quickly narrowed the choice down to Yamaha, Denon and Onkyo.

As a result of reviews from this web site and talking with a few knowledgable people, I ruled out the Onkyo because of it's overheating problems. I've owned Yamaha equipment before and the sound quality was always outstanding. The Denon was exellent but was substatually more expensive than the comparable Yamaha. I had originally planned to purchase the HTR-5250, then saw the features on the newer HTR-5460. I price shopped and found the best price at Abt Electronics, since it was a new model it took almost a month to get it (NOT the fault of Abt).

My home theater speakers are Cerwin Vegas (hey, they work well for the home theater system, better than a LOT of other speakers).

The sounds quality on Dolby 5.1 and DTS encoded DVDs is outstanding, far better than I expected from a receiver in this price range. If I'd have known I was going to get ths mush improvemnet over the old Sony I'd have upgraded years earlier. Star Wars - Phantom Menace was impressive.

The unit has plenty of input, although I can't get the digital input selection to work (trying to select the digital cable box). The remote is awkward and difficult to use. My biggest disappointment is in the video switching. The composite switching adds a lot of noice to the picture. The S-video switching adds a small (but noticeable) amount. I don't have any component video devices (yet) so I can't say if it's got the same problem.

Overall, excellent value, excellent sound, I'm very happy with it.

Strength:

Features, value, power

Weakness:

Nothing major.

This is a very good AV receiver. I considered Denon 1802, but the value of this receiver won me over. Also, I have a Yamaha stereo that I really like, so the brand carried some weight.

I love the power, features (inputs, DTS, 5-channel stereo, on-screen display), and sound of this receiver. It does nearly everything I would like.

It does not have DPL-II. The Denon did, but I didn't want to wait or pay the extra money. I expect next year Yamaha will offer DPL-II. I also wish it had a dynamic range selection for modes other than Dolby Digital. I don't consider these major short-comings, and other than that, this is a great receiver.

The rest of my set up is:
Sony Wega 36"
Sony DVD player
Energy Take 5.2 speakers

Strength:

NO hiss, too many to list...post connections for everything, good sound fields although I leave it on 5channel for music and video. My new system sounds better than I had hoped with this reciever.

Weakness:

none

I love this reciever, lots of punch. I finally have the system I have wanted for years, great sound!! I prefer the post type connections found on this reciever. My speakers sound awesome playing music, DVD, or satellite. Also playstation2 games rock in surround sound (I love the front AV hookups). After my den and office in the basement were finished I hooked up all the speakers, tv, dvd, sony playstation2, and a mini dv camera in no time. I highly recommend this reciever, you won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Lots of Features

Weakness:

Got a Defective Unit

Yeah, my first Yamaha HTR 5460 literally fired up one of the (also new) Bose 301 rears. At first I thought Bose had a new feature, by adding a light inside a port...a wire was burning like the filament of a light bulb. Eventually, the both rears refused to make sound. Took the new 301 Series IV and tha Yamaha back to Best Buy (3 days old), and they replace with only minor resistance. The replacement 301s (used as rears), the replacement HTR 5460, and my old 301s (mains) and Bose center now perform well together. The remote is as good as most. The Yammy seems to have more than enough power. Pleanty of hook ups. More than enough modes (some are useless, but I love the Stereo mode for loud music). Now...if this Yam doesn't burn the house down, I'll be happy. You can bet the warranty card will be mailed.

Strength:

Everything, esp. clarity, multiple optical and component hookups, SSSSOOOO many features

Weakness:

SSSOOOO many features, it's gonna take awhile to figure em all out, controller is a little clustered, but you get the hang of it rather quickly

In buying this reciever I spent many an hour reviewing other similar products. I had decided on the following three in the same price range but for different reasons 1) Pioneer vsxd710 - does have a component output, price was right $299, however, my last pioneer only lasted 3 years before it went kaput; 2) Harmon Kardon 210 - again a little more expensive $399, probably the best brand receiver, but lacks a component output; and 3) Yamaha HTR5460 - can get at ecost.com for $330, has two component in and one component out; low resistance cicuitry (similar to hk and onkyo), 5.1 stereo sound. Overall, the yamaha is by far the best bang for your buck - so far it's been incredible for both music and movies. HIGHLY recommended.

My current home theater setup includes 2 front DCM 10's, a DCM center, 2 rear Bose 201's, and an Acoustic Research 12 inch sub - this combination has been well worth the time and effort.

Strength:

Sound is clear, controls are GREAT! Easy to set up and use!

Weakness:

NONE!

This receiver has it all for such a low price. Watching movies is fantastic! Listening to music is unbelievable! I looked around at all the receivers in my area and I always come back to Yamaha. The 100 watts RMS are pure and not over rated as some of the other receivers.
I am using B&W speakers for my main and center channel, Bose speakers as my rear and a Yamaha sub-woofer.

I was looking for a home theatre system that played music. I've found it. Most receives don't have the 5 channel stero mode. Movies sound awesome! I recommend the fibre optic cable to hook up with!
