The 1200 was indeed originally designed as a home audio deck, the direct drive musn't be looked at as a conventional motor directly attached to the platter.

The platter actualy is what in a conventional motor would be the strator bearing the magnets. BUT it bears a continuous ring magnet, there is no rumble caused by the rotor moving from one magnet to the next.

Also the high torque is not just a convenience, its main advantage is speed stability and therefore pitch stability. When the stylus hits a busy part of the groove, the forces caused slow down the reccord unless the motor is strong enough. High torque guaranties dynamics and pitch stabilty.

Look at comments on the technics sp-10 and EMT turntable to learn about the benefits of proper direct drive.

Also, kev, you can't judge a product by "just looking at it", "Just looking at it" a rega planar is just a piace of MDF with a light platter an cheap motor and a belt, but it is more than that.

It seems that most of actual users are pretty pleased.

    Strength:

THis table is built like a tank, strong dependable.

    Weakness:

The pitch shifter zeros out with a notch so finding that perfect speed close to zero is very hard.

Technics are by far the best on the market. I have used several being a professional Trance Dj and to me they are just what all of the other tables want to be.
They may cost a little bit more but they are well worth every penny. I can not give it five stars though just because Technics have a newer model on the market.

    Strength:

Strong, Sound Wicked, Ooozzzes Quality, Stood The Test Of Time

    Weakness:

    None what so EVER!

So who gave it less than 5 stars are mad. Name me another product that is still in production after 20 years and has not changed one bit! Why? Because it does not need to thats why! The turntable will never be beaten. Its still number one. In England if your DJ'ing and you dont have Technics then the crowd will laugh at you. So many people have come up to me and admired my decks. Yes its funny but they do, they have a reputation. They also last for years. People can stand on these and they wont budge! They may cost more than the average deck but they are worth every penny! I love Technics stuff I also own a Technics Amp and think thats really good. I'm sure most agree, you can't please everyone but then again who's to say the '1 Star' ratings are not by people who are 'Tone Deaf' like their stupid attitudes!
