da Man
an Audiophile
Now listen here, I gotta put these poor excuses for audio equipment down. They just don't satisfy my needs for exact replication of the recorded source. Now, I just can't live with the fact that people are getting cheap analogue when I pay top dollar for mine. There's got to be some pleasure that I'm getting out of my Michell Orbe that is worth the Washingtons. Oh, I give up. All I really want is to Boogie. Boogie on, Boogie Man. So, in summary, I have to rate this product 5 stars or else the Boogie Man might get me. Oh, Boogie Man, when will you come? |

Strength:
Tough. Can take anything, and still sound great.
Weakness:
none. This turntable definitely tolerates more "hands on" use than any other table. While I tend to use the decks mostly for DJing, I've appreciated just kicking back and listening to pretty good quality sound coming from LPs. |

Strength:
Great solid construction, direct drive, adjustability
Weakness:
? This is a fantastic turntable. I've owned a range of turntables, but the SL-1200 Ltd edition is the one that gets the most comments from guests. It looks terrific. Being a DJ, I also have a normal SL-1200 MKII. They are rock solid. Any amount of ground vibration is unnoticable. The direct drive is unfaultable. the amount of torque it puts out is terrific. While my other "high end" turntables had problems with even slightly warped records, the sl1200 just trooped on. It's been dropped, stepped on, and it just keeps on going. There is no belt rumble, and with a good cartrige, it sounds fantastic...can I even say high end? I have it plugged into my Marantz PM-17 and Dynaudio Audience 50s....My friends diss me for having such a commercial turntable hooked up to my pretty good system, but after an audition, they are convinced of its value. Not that I care...in terms of value, versatility, construction and longevity, this is an unbeatable turntable. Similar Products Used: Project, old Philips |

High Torque Direct Drive Motor, Quartz Locking, Electronic Braking, 0.7seconds of startup, Aluminum Diecast Cabinet,
Weakness:
To a certain point, the Tone-Arm(for Hifi Use) The Technics 1200mkXX has been talked about for 2 decades now. People still ask the same question over and over, How does this Comply with HiFi Turntables....Many audiophiles have a biased attitude among the name TECHNICS which makes them see their views behind the NAME not the TURNTABLE. If Audiophiles happen to check out the turntable, they don't tend to try to find all the fine adjustments properly, not to mention a poor attempt in customizing the 1200mkXX. Strength:
Solid build, instant starting, almost instant stopping, quiet, 78 RPM
Weakness:
none I bought this table to use for 78 RPM playback. KAB modifies these puppies to play 78's and IMHO you can't get a better table than this for that purpose. For LP's/ 45's etc it's top notch also. Hands down this is one of the best tables on this planet. I have a Pickering XV-15 cartridge in it and can swap to an LP, 1 mil mono or 78 stylus for whatever I'm listening to. 78's track at 3 - 6 grams and this table doesn't miss a lick tracking at that weight like a belt drive would. I track mono LP's at 3 - 5 grams. I buy and sell records and play grade so it's important to be able to listen to a lot of records and not wait 30 seconds for the platter to get up to speed. The speed never falters, there is no motor noise, VTA is on a dial!!! Easy to set up and is maintenance free in the 5 years+ I have owned it. You could put this table into any system - hi end, lo end and it will do what it was made to do. Audiophiles snub it because of it being direct drive and the Technics name on it, but if you have seen or heard the cheesy junk being touted as entry level audiophile tables and can get past the ludicrous snobbish reviews, you'd pick this thing. Two of the biggest pieces of junk I have ever used were Dual and AR tables. Absolute crap!! And these tables I have always seen high reviews on!! Yeah right!! "audiophiles" have a cattle mentality at times and I lined right up too!! I don't trust reviews anymore. I trust my ears. You get up into the $2000 range for U.S. made tables and you start getting close to what the 1200 has to offer. The Japanese have this one right! Hands down. I also have a Thorens 320 table with a Sumiko Blue Point Special cartridge so I can easily compare a belt drive to a direct drive and know a little about it. In my mind I can!!LOL.... I haven't tried any other cartridge in the 1200 except the Pickering. It's flat through all ranges and warm. I have a computer dedicated to recording cd's tied into my amplifier and the 1200 produces warmer, LP sounding cd's than the Thorens. I barely use the Thorens anymore and could easily keep the 1200 as my primary table. Almost..maybe.. the Thorens is sweet!! KAB is on the 'net and sells these tables and does the modification to enable this table to play 78 RPM. The only thing I didn't like was the hard wired inter connects which is easily fixed with a new set of cables, a soldering iron and a few screwdrivers. The dust cover acts like a microphone and has to come off when playing loud, but all tables are like that I have found. I wouldn't let that budge the 5 stars I give this table. If you are in the market for a new turntable and have a few $$ to spend, I wouldn't overlook this table. If you have less than a grand to spend - this should be the one!!! If you look you can find these used at a fair price. You won't see as many of the 1200's as thousands of other tables for sale used and there is a very simple reason for it. People buy these and they keep them!! Similar Products Used: Thorens, AR, Dual, Denon among others |

Audiophile
Strength:
time tested, DJ'ing standard, and well built (quality)
Weakness:
high price, non-audiophile sound, only +/-8% pitch and DJ name-brand snobbery The Technics SL-1200 MK2 is a beautiful DJ'ing machine. It has all the power and stability a DJ needs. However, as the popularity of the Technics rose, so did the price. I've seen the inner workings of the 1200 and it's not worth ~$500. It is the DJ'ing standard though, and has been time tested. The Gemini PT-2000 is an exact replica of the 1200. In all dimensions, it's almost exactly the same (even weight). But it doesn't carry the Technics name, nor has it's construction been time tested (a worthy replacement for those who only want to spend $300). The Vestax are great tables for DJ'ing. They are more powerful and have greater pitch adjustment. But, they also cost more than the 1200s in many cases. The Numark Pro TT-1 is a very competent DJ'ing table, with a lot of newer technology. It's well built (weight), smooth operation, stable and not over-priced. In audiophile terms, the 1200s aren't up to par. They weren't created for the audiophile market though. I'm not going to take a Chevy 1/2 ton and compare it to a Jaguar. The 1200s are awesome for DJ'ing, although there are a few tables that compete with it.
