Strength:

Very stable drive. Good balanced arm. Cartridge model 270 good choice.

Weakness:

Could have a quartz lock

Believe or not I´ve got this one for about U$30 at a fleemarket and it almost looked like new including original cartridge plus an additional Pickering with its mounting. At this price it is easy to say its a bargain but getting serious now. I compared this directly against my Sony and a DUAL turntable and they didn´t stand a chance. Its warmth and definition made me listen to my vinyls time after time and I enjoy this machine. I seriously had a 1200MK2 in mind, but I guess I´ll skip that for now.

Strength:

Durable. Simple but quality construction. No frills, durable TT. Smooth function.

Weakness:

It is not a high end turntable, but for < $100 used, you can't go wrong here. They have crappy interconnects that are hardwired into the turntable.

This is not a high end turntable. It doesn't have the engineering marvels of the better Denon and Marantz 6300 turntables. However, you can normally pick one of these up for less than $100 if you look around for a little while. Especially on ebay; they are common. This unit does not have a super-heavy platter and I have never seen them with super-expensive cartridges mounted on them. Usually you find a Shure or Audio-Technica at the end of the arm. Also, there are these RCA cables of terrible quality that are hardwired into the chassis, and so cannot be easily removed.

With all the detractions being said, if you do want a direct drive turntable that has a very reliable drive mechanism, a very nice looking and functioning tone arm with a very cool slow dampening mechanism, this will work for you. The sound it produces is fine wih me. It is quite a bargain and is worth every penny if you can find one for $100 or less. I bought several of them, combined the best parts, and sold all but the keeper back on ebay. It is now my work horse turntable that I use whenever I want something that will play reliably and when I don't want to mess with it too much. I think the blue book value on these is $250.

My system that this SL-D2 is currently hooked up to:
McIntosh C-32 Pre-amp,
two Eico HF-22 tube monoblocks with a quad of RCA 6L6 tubes,
Klipsch Cornwalls,
Acoustic Research interconnects and some fat-ass (10 ga.) copper wire for speaker wire.

Similar Products Used:

older Pioneer PL-series, several 70's era Marantz tables.
