Weakness:
Lacks coherence and proper midrange Purchased the XLO ER-5 for use between a new DVD player and the amp. After completing the manufactures recommended 24 to 36 hour cable burn-in, I still found the XLO's to lack any adequate midrange. All voices had a nasal quality to them. More importantly, it seemed also unable to blend efectively any movie dialoge with background sound effects. The dialoge was too soft and the sound effects too loud. To see if this was a characteristic of my DVD player or the particular DVD, I swapped my Harmonic Technology Truthlinks with the XLO's. Now everything was what it supposed to be. It surely showed the deficiencies of the XLO's. I do know the Truthlinks cost more, but I don't think I was getting an adequate audio value for the money spent on the XLO ER-5's. Even if it was only $50. Similar Products Used: Harmonic Technology Truthlinks, Nordost Blue Heavens |

Heard good things about XLO interconnects and saw an excellent review of a pair of XLO's in Home Theater which prompted me to seek out a pair. I called XLO directly and was assisted by a salesman in selecting the proper cable for my system. The ER-5's were within my budget (which was up to $100 a pair) and were said to offer performance as good as cables costing much more. My old inters were Tara Labs Prism 22's- a good cable, but I wanted to experiment. I have had a pair of the ER-5's for about 2 1/2 months now and they seem to be well broken in. A one word description would be "neutral". I am struggling to find words to describe the sound of these cables because there are none- they don't exhibit any brightness, no sense of tubbiness or unwanted warmth, no lack of bass or treble definition and no sense of the cables impeding transparency. All in all they are just an excellent, neutral, "clear" and smooth sounding cable. Comparing it to another cable, like my Tara-Prism 22's, I can see improvements in soundstage width and depth, and greater transparency in definition of the soundstage- especially at the outer edges in the revealing of overtones and hall re-creation. Midrange is more defined, extreme treble more smoothed and natural. I don't think you'll find better around the $50/meter pair. When comparing to others in this price range I have to give 5 stars. |

Good clear signal. I like these cables a lot they gave my whole system a nice tweak. The sound quality was noticeably better. I intend on using them for future components. |
