Strength:

Warm ,Musical, Upgradable for little cost.

Weakness:

None.

This last year I picked up a Tjoeb 4000 after reading all the glowing praise here and elsewhere in print. I was replacing an old Sony ES workhorse I had had for 10 years. I spent months listening to cd players and reading reviews and talking to shifty salesmen with the result that I eventually bought a Rotel RCD1070. The Rotel was definitely good, a hands-down improvement on my old Sony, but it was still just kinda ok in a digital way. So I sold it for a profit, sold my Sony and picked up my Tjoeb sound-unheard online. I am very happy with this unassuming piece of gear - it's warm, detailed and versatile. I picked up a pair of Tjoeb Tjoens and am now considering upgrading to the upsampler option - why not, everything else has worked an inprovement! Lastly, I have to say I admire the philosophy behind the Ah! company, taking a good existing mid-fi product and turning it into an ever tweakable dependable hi-fi product - this is so out of character with the always changing hi-fi manufacturers. To top it off after e-mailing Hermann at Ah! in Holland he sent me the AH! logo for my player and remote free of charge! Very nice indeed.

Strength:

Sonic beauty, harmonic texture,PRICE! It can be upgraded, you can change it's signature just by slapping in a different tube. Can be further modified.

Weakness:

Light wieght case. (NEEDS TO BE DAMPENED)Nothing a Dynamat speaker kit won't fix. Upscale Audio.......They know they sold the player, use it's high resale value as a selling point, then refuse to sell the better sounding tubes to the second owner.

Really nice sounding player for the money.I have the 627 op amps with '60s Amperexes (white print 6922). I have also dampened the case lid (which made a dramatic improvement). I have also dropped the output voltage to match with my high gain pre amp. I use an AR HT130 (27.00)(I know, but you haven't tried it)cable to connect it to my Audio Research LSII. This player sounds very natural, open and "extremely detailed". Not at all bright as you might expect. This player really only requires one word to discribe it MUSIC!I have had several nice players over the last 25 years but this one is hands down my favorite.

After listening to several friend´s tube setups I kept my Rotel 1090 and bought the AH! 4000 and one AE-3 tube pre from upscale audio. Simply great, even during this breakin period.I bought the unit with some of the upgrades but I´m looking after the upsampler upgrade.

Best sounding player around.

Weakness:

Looks mid-fi

I was lucky enough to find this used on ebay! :) and it was already broken in which was even better. I've owned many different cd players, but this tops them all. My Sony ES sacd transport took a dump on me so I decided to pick up this gem due to all of the reviews. I must say they were all right! The imaging, wieght, tonality is all dead on with the player. It is so musical! Highly recommended. Another gem I found in ebay were Cableplex C1 interconnects. I ended up selling my KCAG Silver streaks after purchasing these, and bought some good CD with the money I saved HAHA.

Solid performance Tweakability Great support from Upscale Audio

Weakness:

I bought the Njoe Tjoeb 4000 based on the many positive reviews and as the first step of a stereo overhaul. Unfortunately, the rest of the overhaul is behind schedule so I'm yet to hear the full potential. Still, during the nine months I've been using the deck it has performed flawlessly. I was initially thrown by the fact that the tray does not extend out as far as other units I have used over the years (Yamaha, Sony, Marantz, etc). In the process of trying to manipulate the tray I managed to jam the original transport. Thankfully Kevin and the folks at Upscale Audio bailed me out and sent me a new one. They are truely class acts to deal with and don't forget you after the initial transaction.

Strength:

Excellent match with Klipsch Heritage speakers. Smooth sweet sound lacking harshness of SS

Weakness:

can't think of any

My discovery of the AH! Njoe Tjoebs CD player comes at the end of transitioning, changing out several pieces of my two channel system. Earlier on in the year I had acquired a pair of Klipsch La Scala speakers. These are a pair of awesome sounding, fully horn loaded speakers. I hear people say horns are not for everyone, but I love the sound. The problem is that they are so highly efficient, 104 db at 1 watt/1 meter, that they reveal every weakness of ones sources. Frankly, they sounded harsh and over bearing being played on my beloved Hafler pre and power amps. Reading posts on the Klipsch forum was helpful and I became convinced that I'd check out the tube amp world to see if I could hear that liquid sound the tube folk keep talking about. Got into tubes with a lovingly rebuilt vintage Scott 299b and was amazed at how much that helped smooth out the harshness. O.K. The tube people were right about that. Still I had some harshness in my music and couldn't listen long without tiring. I had been for years suspicious of the audiophile claims for high dollar CD players. But while reading more posts from folks who had resolved the same issues with tubed CD players, I got curious enough to make the investment. I read reviews on the Tjoeb and the Heart 6000, and they both sounded like reasonable prospects, especially for the price point. In the end decided that the Tjoeb would get the nod and I have never looked back. The Tjoeb does it for me in a big way. My reference CD (for me) was recorded by Liz Story and Joe DiBartolo. Curiously, there were some few high piano notes in that recording that would break up no matter how I configured my system. Well, after the 100 hour break in period, I noticed that those very notes were produced cleanly and clearly. Also, there was still considerably less harshness from the La Scala's. I don't have the audiophile's vocabulary to describes the Tjoeb, but I sure do like what I hear and have been surprised that I would hear such a significant improvement in sound.

Strength:

-Smooth operation -Sound -Value -Functionality

Weakness:

Few, the fader function on the remote control is one to mention, it decay's the sound too fast for my liking so I don't use this often.

I was in the mood for a change. And change I did! This CD player works flawlessly. The sound is incredible and has a robust output. It reads the CD's in a matter of seconds. Drawer action is smooth and precise. Apart from the rather ordinary look of the Njoe Tjoeb's Marantz 4000 chassis, the Njoe Tjoeb is a fantastic bargain at the price levels being offered. The 192 KHz Swiss Upsampler adds a level of dimensionality unknown in players of this price range. I also purchased the special Feet and Power Cord options. The remote control unit is ergonomically correct, small and comfortable like a glove. I understand that the output is strappable via solder bridges for additional voltage swing. Currently I am using the provided ECG 6922 tubes, the installed Russian 6922 'Rocket' logo tubes were re-installed in the output section of my Dynaco PAS-4 as they were so amazing, my Dynaco needed the help! I highly recommend this fantastic CD player. Only my finest 180 Gram LP's played on my Linn LP12/Akito/K18-II can outclass my Njoe Tjoeb. A+ in quality and sound.

Everything...

Weakness:

Nothing

I’ve got the Tjoeb 4000 Reference CD-player in gold finish. The Reference part means you’ve got all the options including the 24 bit up sampler and the fantastic Siemens E288CC tubes. I bought the player at the HIFI-shop in Eindhoven. The service I got there was downright fantastic. Marcel and Herman really know what they are talking about and do real good recommendations when it comes to composition of your audio components. What can I say about the Tjoeb? The better question is: What CAN’T I say about the Tjoeb? It’s got so much clarity, transparency, detail that you’re not believing you are listening to a € 1325,= cd-player. It’s just spectacular!!! The air around voices is tremendous. It’s just incredible. You can actually hear the size of the room the artist is in. The soundstage is also very good. With your eyes closed you can pinpoint the position of each instrument. It needs a running in period of about 200 hours, I think. I cannot stress this enough: If you are serious about music and you’re looking in the range to € 2000,=, than this player has to be in the top 3 of your players. Also try Transparent cables with the AH! product line. There awesome too!!!

Strength:

Sound, the ease it does its job Upgradability (I still want to replace my JAN6922 tubes with Siemens tubes, but that's something for next year)

Weakness:

Why is the display so badly readable ?

I changed my (very good) Tjoeb'99 for a NjoeTjoeb 4000 Super (with the Tjoebshoes, Ribs etc...). It was already an immediate improvement. I was reluctant the buy the upsampler as it costs 350 € : half of the original player. But last week, I took the plunge. And I don't regret it : especially in bass registers . It seems that the player became more -say- airy, the bass registers are much more detailed : the player has much less trouble to do its job. Sound experience is something subjective and therefore very individual . And as English is not my mothertongue(It's dutch : so I can pronounce "Tjoeb" correctly) , it's difficult to express these feelings. So I say : have a listen for yourself. But one thing I want to emphasize : Although the Njoetjoeb 4000 Super is already an excellent machine, go for the one with the Tjoupsampler The rest of my gear : Amp : Primare A20III dubbed I20 Speaker : Sonus Faber Concerto Cable : Wireworld Oasis III Speaker Cable : Ah! (also very good)

Strength:

wonderfully pure sound. Superb midrange, real sounding bass. Excells with all types of music. Very smmoth, yet highly transparent, open soundstage. Great dynamics.

Weakness:

Its a lightweight chassis, but it looks just fine and sounds great, so who cares!

This is one fantastic player. Don't be scared by its price. I purchased the stock Supertoeb 4000 for $719.00 from Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio. He gives great advice, like to talk audio on the phone, and this guy is one of the top people in the country when it comes to knowledge of gear and he's the tube guru - par excellence! Buy this player and don't look back! Yes it comes in a modest package, but it looks great on my audio rack with my Aragon 8000 series electronics and sounds unbelievable! You will hear instruments as they should sound. Violins and string instruments will improve many fold over your standard $2000 player. This little overachiever trounced my CAL CL-15, a $1700 player. I love the sonics of this player so much, I won't even consider thinking of another player - period. I look forward to adding the upsampler for $299.00 and hey, there's always lots of tubes to experiment with this player. I guess what I'm trying to articulate is that this player not only sounds fantastic, it has brought the fun back into the audio hobby - at least for me. After 30 years of listening to equipment, this player, at such a ridiculously cheap sticker price, has me spending way more time ENJOYING my cd collection. By the way, Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio, is one person in the business you can trust. He'll give you great advice and great customer service! Give him a call and order the AH! Supertoeb 4000 - you'll wonder why you spent a lot more on your last player!
