Strength:
Best value in the world of hifi!
Weakness:
None of my friends know AH!, none of them believe it's a tubed cd-player until I show them! Nothing to add to all the reviews of the cd-player. Simply fabulous and a BIG shame that the traditional hifi-magazines don't know about this miracle or don't want to know about! After initial surprising experience with this cd-player I decided to get a bunch of AH! cables. Before I was using an expensive mix of Siltech and MIT cables and was not unhappy with that. After trying the AH! interconnects and loudspeakercables for about 1 week, I was puzzled. I had so much more transparency, so much more "ease", so much more natural control that I thought: "impossible". These cables are just a fraction of the price of the cables was using till now. But later on I realised that this thought was not new at all: I had the same experience and same thoughts with the AH! player. Are these AH! people from another planet? True or not, they are my Wizards of AH! Unfortunately because of that I am loosing quite some money: my Siltech / MIT cables are for sale! Similar Products Used: Meridian 208 which I still use next to my Njoe Tjoeb 4000. |

Strength:
Smooth adn warm yet retaining clarity and lots of sepertion. Individual instruments have a lot of space and the sound stage is wide and deep
Weakness:
Display is small and not well lit. The output voltage is too high for headphone users even though it can be changed by a competent solderer Price paid £495.00 Read these reviews with confidence. All the glowing reports your read are TRUE. This is a fabulous piece of equipment. I have been looking for years for a better CDP than the Marantz CD63 K.I. Signature to which I'd added the Trichord Clock 3. The CD4000 has been worth waiting for. Forget those nagging doubts about spending your hard-earned cash on an uncertainty. Take my word you'll not be disappointed and most dealers will offer you a thirty-day trial. From the beginning you'll notice the warmth, smoothness, and the retained clarity of this product and the sound stage is astonishing. Upgrade the Valves and enjoy the improvement for not much cost. It's now available from Icon audio in Leicester U.K. which makes life even easier and the guy at Icon will really help you without pressing you to take the highest priced version. Don't forget it's upgradeable later if you want to start off at the lowest price. Similar Products Used: Marantz 63SE and Marantz CD63KI siganture |

Strength:
Everything is there. Warm sound. May be upgraded with ultra performant tubes.
Weakness:
Basic look Simply fabulous, even independently of its price which is indeed very attractive. Exept its look, this cd player is fantastic from bottom to very high frequencies. I recommend the upsampling option which is very performant. It may be compared very easily to cd players costing 3 to 5 times more. Similar Products Used: Cairn, Cambridge, Bel Canto, CEC |

Strength:
Musicallity, realism see above.Value for money. The Ah people have made the right prioritys. Simple player with with a lovely sounding DAC/outputstage/Upsampler etc.
Weakness:
The Basic player feels a bit weak. A very lightweight construction. But I guess i does it´s job and you must consider the price. You better belive all good things you read about the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb! While other players present their enterpretation of music, The Tjoeb actually plays it for you! It is hard to describe an experiance/feeling. But I think musical realism could be a good word for it. This is what I always have been looking for in a system, the kind of realism that gives you goosebumps, but that is hard to come by if you have a limted budget. I want a big (3D) soundstage and plenty of dynamics and by all means a clear undistorted sound. I have a pair of Snell EIII speakers (they may be inferior of the EII) but they are still a pair of very musical and good speakers, for amplification I use the Edison 60 (EL 34 push pull) 30 w. Class A (see Audion webpage), Systemdek IX turntable with a Clearaudio mod. Rega arm, Clearaudio Alpha (PU) and Musical Fidelitys XLPS phono amp. But in this system the Nobe Tjoeb is the brightest shining star. I bought Supertjoeb (all trimmings) and the 24/192 upsampler. I started with the Philips JAN 6922 tubes, I expected that the tubes made non or more or less no difference, I was dead wrong! I changed after a week to the Siemens E288CC tubes and I was really in for a surprise! I found them on surplus for about $ 50 but they are probably worth $ 200 (I think that is the streetprice in europe) I tell you, it makes all the difference in the world. I would also like to complement Herman van den Dungen, I have e-mailed him at several occations with stupid questions and always get a good and quick respons. I am overall very pleased about my purchase. I auditioned several players before I bought this one, Arcam CD 72, Musical Fidelity X-ray, Roksan Kandy etc. But this was what I have been looking for all along, I think one have to spend plenty more $$$ in order to hear anything better sounding then this plain looking, great sounding CDP. Strength:
Harmonics; space; glow worm goose bumps.
Weakness:
No weaknesses, but I'm developing a fondness for single malt with the listening/sipping I'm doing. As I pen, er, key this into the cyber-ephemera, I'm listening to the sauve, dulcet, cello-like tones of Sir. Francis Albert Sinatra singing on one of those great Capital albums of his--"Point Of No Return." I've never truly heard this album until now: it is achingly beautiful. And, until now, my system did not communicate The Voice in all his unfiltered Camels-induced, Weltschmerz ache and beauty. The only thing I changed in the system was the source. I replaced my doughty Meridian 508/20 with this gee-whiz-it-shouldn't-be-this-'effin-good-but-it-is Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 2000! There are many Brooklyn bridges, many parcels of Floridian prime acreage, many fish tales, whoppers and Apocrypha in this wonderful, maddening hobby that we all love, give blood, and raid our domestic coffers for. But this ain't one of them; and this won't require blood, bait or unsightly domestic agita. It's the best source I've ever main-lined, and I've main-lined some pretty deck ear jejo, including choice analog stuff like the redoubtable Oracle Delphi turntable. The Ah!, if you'll excuse the pun, smokes that. Give the breezily insouciant Kevin at Upscale Audio a call. Finally an affordable rig that lives up to the hype: Powa tutha People. |

Strength:
Warm, detailed and musical
Weakness:
None. We'll see about its longevity. Have had the Njoe Tjoeb with all the mods (including the Upsampler) for about three months now. It needed a long break-in period abd a change of tubes to Amperex 7308's, but now it is a joy to listen to my CD collection, The soundstage is dimensional and realistic. The music is warm but detailed at the same time. I can't say enough good things about this product. Similar Products Used: Cary, Arcam, Creek |

Strength:
warm (live-life human ) sound !! very logical control layout . (no wonder this unit is used for after market-moldify unit. possible to tailor sound by changing tubes . Best for vocal music .
Weakness:
$1000 isn't a cheap player but more a real price than the ad.$500+ (a standard player will not do much good )it'll be the same when compare to the mass market cdp . Just purchased Ah from Upscale Audio($from 500+ &end up with $1000+) Since I'm also looking for the best within <$2000 range (tude cdp) Well,I'm looking for a warm sound so tude is the only way to go . I search & search finally came across this Ah ! Funny name like this should be a more interesting .For the build quality ,I'll say it's an after market shell with a very good upgrade parts . However ,it has all the logical control button on the front & on the remote (better than some very expensive one ,I can say ,though, it's made of plastic ) I can almost operate all the button without light once I know them .Indeed I like to listen to my music in darkness to feel the sound of the singer come to live! It logged in only <60hours & I can only compare my 10+yrs old Revox costing $1800 10yr+ ago still have plastic panel on each side but for the sound Ah has more live-life human sound & good dynamic. However, for the actual musical instrument placement Ah 's background is flat & the high is a little roll off while my revox sound live more 3d but thin in human voice .I found a careful choose of cable make some difference between high roll off & tighter bass . (so I make my own cable which sound better than the $100+ monster cable) Well I 'll post another update once I get the full break-in of the unit. ps . some of the so call upgrade parts such as the 'feet ' to damming vibration ;I find it questionable ,else I have yet to get more time to prove their value !! I did add the Dynamat to strenghten & daming the unit inside (it works & feels more solid after the treatment ).The unit drive is quiet & fast for tracking any cds. However ,the heat from the unit may be my concern though it generate a warm heat ,that (Upscale Audio) told me not to worry ?? Also I connect the cd player diectly to the power tude amp for the max signal best souns feild I can obtain so the remote internal volume control is valuable to me ,much like my revox . Similar Products Used: Sony ,Revox, pioneer My system Ah/Revox Direct to VTL poweramp >Quad speaker = almost Live-life human sound (stereo separation can be better if the internal wiring are in some polarity /inphase,I thin |

Strength:
Warmth, performances come alive, mids, highs
Weakness:
None in this price range. I have been slowly improving my audio system over the past few months. This is a secondary vice for me (with my first and most of my $ being S cars, M cars, AMG cars, etc) so I consider myself knowledgable but not an expert. I am very sensitive to harshness in a system and until my recent changes, including the Njoe Tjoeb, had been unable to listen to more than a few tracks at a time without fatiguing. I purchased a pair of Maggie 1.6s (another audiophile steal, IMHO) and a Rotel RB-1080 power amp. I was using a crappy Panasonic DVD player to play CDs and using the DAC on my Harman Kardon AVR-65 HT unit. I knew this was probably the final source of major harshness in my system so I set out looking for a CDP. I was originally looking in the 1000-2000 range and auditioned many players at local stores including all the obvious contenders. I just wasn't all that happy with any of them so I started reading online and came across the stunning reviews of the Njoe Tjoeb 4000 and the glowing reports on Upscale Audio's service levels. After trading a couple emails, I ordered it unheard with the upgraded power cord and feet. Kevin at Upscale bent over backwards to get it to me the next day and when it came I plugged it in and fired it up and I would say it was only a bit better than my Panasonic/HK setup. Thanks to this site and Kevin, however, I knew it needed to be broken in for a hundred hours or so before it started to do its magic. After 120 hours I couldn't help it and fired it back up for a listen and I was astonished. Like others have said, it was like my old well-known CDs were new and in a better way. Vocals, strings, saxes, all sounded much warmer and more real. Tracks of Norah Jones (Come Away With Me, Turn Me On) are now a spine-tingling experience. For about $750 I did better than I thought I would/could for $2000. Couldn't be more pleased! I have yet to experiment with other tubes or op-amps, but look forward to doing so soon. Strength:
(1) The Sound (resolution, sound stage etc) (2) Value for money
Weakness:
It looks like a Japanese mass produced CD player! But, so what. At that price - the sound it produces is "organic"! Purchased Ah! Njoe Tjoebe (super tube) with upsampler, custom feet, tube rings, power cord and "De Mat" -about 1 month ago, from Kevin Deal -Upscale Audio. It came with Rocket 6922 tubes installed - with spare JAN 6922 tubes. This is perhaps the best purchase of high end audio equipment I have made to date (we have a lot of systems at our home-ask my wife!) This unit sounds phenomenal in every respect. Wide, deep soundstage - superb low level resolution.3 day burn in greatly helps. Music emerges from a black/quiet background. A particular benefit, overlooked by many people is the headphone jack with variable volume control. Hook up a pair of Sennheiser HD-600's and you will be amazed! It sounds better than many CD-headphone combos. This unit holds its own against the Sony SCD 777ES. Upscale audio provided me excellent service and a truly superb product. Would strongly recommend this CD player to anyone searching for a player under$2000 Similar Products Used: Parasound CDP 1000/DA converter, SCD 777ES, CJ CAV-50, Musical Fidelity XA2, Triangle Antal, Zerius speakers |
