Strength:
Clarity, definition, soundstage, imaging, sound can be customized by changing tubes(i'v only tried the stock tubes so far.)
Weakness:
None Just as i began to think, "why have i been wasting my money on SS recievers all these years", when i bought a tube amp, i also began to think "why have i been wasting my money on regular CDP's all these years", when i bought the Njoe Tjoeb 4000. Hooked up to a Jolida JD1501 tube hybrid amp with a pair of B&W DM601's & a powered sub, the sound is wonderful & lively, with a full soundstage & pinpoint imaging. Bass definition & impact are much improved over the cheap SONY CDP i was using before, & after the initial break-in the bass tightened up nicely. Base price is $599, but for a little over $100 more i decided to get the "Super Tjoeb" with the "Tjoeb shoes" (heavy duty feet), "Direkt AC cord" & "Goody Pac". If you record your own CD's like i do the NT4000 will expose any flaws in them, "not the players fualt". I have CDR's which play fine on my other CDP's, but on the NT4000 any mistakes in the recording will be audible. I am thinking of upgrading to a new CD-rom, the burner work's fine but has trouble reading certain CD's. I also like the NT4000's features, such as fader & output level becuase i dont have remote volume for the Jolida. I can't compare the NT4000 to more expensive CDP's becuase i hav'nt heard any, but i can campare it to a SONY CA70ES which i own. The NT4000 cost about twice as much & sounds like it too! A great CDP & Kevin at Upsclale audio is very helpful. Similar Products Used: SONY CA70ES CDP,& "cheap" SONY CDP |

Strength:
Sounds like live music
Weakness:
Bad stock opamps & tubes All the Ah CD player owners should replace the standard opamps BB OPA604 with the AD825. Read this forum about these opamps. http://headwize.powerpill.org/ubb/showpage5.php?fnum=3&tid=1197. With the AD825 and Sovtek 6922 tubes, the Ah would be in the playing level of the Heart CD6000. You also can improve the sound by adding a high quality 5 microFarad 100V polypropylene or polystyrene capacitor (from MultiCap or Hovland or Infinicap or Wondercap) across pins 4 and 5 of the tubes. Happy listening. Similar Products Used: Conrad Johnson PV12AL pre-amp and Cary Audio Rocket 88 power amp |

Everything
Weakness:
None Every now and then a great product comes along. Being an audiophile for over 30 years,I have seen just about everything and the hype that goes along with this insane hobby.I started builing my own equipment many years ago. My current system components are The Borbely All Fet line amp, The Curcio Dac(fed digitaly by a PD-93 pioneer. Odyessy mono's, and Maggie 1.6's. All powered by a PS Audio P-600. The Curcio Dac is absoultely outstanding. It is a tube dac, It was constructed using Caddock & Tantalum resistors along with Black gates throughout the design. All the superlatives can be used for this dac. It was my assault on the High-end, and up until 2 weeks ago I would have put it in a league of it's own. ENTER The TJOEB. After reading many reviews on this CDP I decided to tale the plunge. Right out of the box, the unit sounded very impressive. It did not sound like the Curcio, But definately had some serious pace and rhythm. I used it with the 6H23 tubes.Afere a few days of burn in,things really opened up. The top end is extremely quick and liquid, and the midrange is absolutely glorious. There is no hint of trace of grain. The bass is also quite tuneful, listening to Stanley Clarke can be a real breath-taking experience. At this point after 2 weeks of burn in, I would have to say that this CDP is 90-95% of what the Curcio is, and I have not even played with those 7308 tubes that everyone is raving about. If the upsampling board can improve on this in any way I will be a very happy camper.Kudos to Kevin Deal and Upscale Audio for really raising the bar with this great product. Strength:
Sweetness. Warmth. Acoustic guitar. Piano.
Weakness:
I can't wait to try out the 24/192 upsampler. I'd been fed with a steady dose of SS's for many years already. Enough was enough. It's time for warmer sound--I said to myself. Okay things must start from the source. And after lengthy audition I settled on the EAR 834 integrated amplifier, which came with two 6L6, two ECC83 and two ECC85 tubes. It matched very well with my Thiel CS 1.5's. But I needed something that made my system warmer. There entered the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000. Here's my system (actually two systems in one): Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 --> EAR 834 --> Thiel CS 1.5's. Also running parallel is: Denon DCD-1650AR --> Conrad Johnson PF-R Preamp --> Conrad Johnson MF-2200 Amp --> Thiel CS 1.5's. Feeling excited I opened the shipping box, followed instructions to install the CD clamp, and powered Njoe Tjoeb 4000 up. It did not work. The transport made too much noise. So disappointed I emailed Kevin Deal for help. Kevin promptly sent me a brand new drive. This kind of service is priceless. Thanks Kevin. Right off the bat, the Njoe Tjoeb 4000 sang like a bird. But the bass was kind of muddy and not quite as snappy as my old Denon CD player. I plugged two Siemens 7308s into the player and hooked the Njoe Tjoeb up with my CJ PF-R pream and let the two of them making love with each other for four straight days. I found the Siemens 7308's have the best bass response. Amperex 7308's yield the best overall soundstage. I ended up choosing the Siemens. The Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 equals or even betters the Denon DCD-1650AR in resolutions. The soundstage is wide and deep. I play guitar for fun okay. And I have to say that the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 --> EAR 834 --> Thiel CS 1.5's combo produces the best acoustic guitar playback I've heard. I also like the way the said system sound on piano -- so palpable, so real that I thought Chopin was in the room!!! Bad records? What bad records? Bad CDs become very listenable now. I ended up going through all my CD collection one by one. Oh life is good. The tubed CD player to tubed integrated combo is so sweet and so warm. My Conrad Johnson combo is also warm , but tubes are 'warmer'; It's rather difficult to describe; You have to try tubes to fully understand the difference. Similar Products Used: Already included. Ooops I almost forgot the cables. Bad cables can really screw things up, can't they? Interconnect: Nodost Blue Heaven (for the tubes to tubes combo). AudioQuest Python (Conrad |

Strength:
Clear view into the recording venue. Upgradeability, and the ability to talor its sound to individual taste.
Weakness:
Can expose poor recordings for their worth. First, I would like to acknowledge Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio for the outstanding support and customer service he provides. Thanks Kevin! What more can be said about this fine CD player that hasn't already been posted here and elsewhere? Read the reviews, buy the player, and experience the hype for yourself. I am using my Ah! 4000 within an all tube system, with ancillary components consisting of: Audio Innovations Series 1000 MK III monos Audio Innovations L-1 preamp Harbeth HL-P3ES-2 loudspeakers Analysis Plus Oval 9/Copper Oval Prior to the Ah! I was using a CEC TL-5100Z, and thought it was doing an admirable job; the sound was smooth, detailed, and unfatiguing. Enter the Ah! fitted with the "Rocket" logo tubes Kevin supplied as an added bonus, and what I thought were smoothness and detail, was actually a veil of mist between me and the speakers. Fimiliar recordings now had uncanny width and depth. I could hear well into the recording venue with startling realism. Leading edges were sharp, not etched, and transient information was apparent in full bloom. The sound just floating between and around the speakers, without regard to localization. The biggest improvement came by way of subtle cues that were missing when using the CEC. Little details and tid-bits of information I hadn't heard before were popping out everywhere, offering me a new perspective in sound. However, at the same time, the Ah! retained all the warmth and smoothness the CEC had to offer. I am impressed to say the least. Mind you, these observations are made while using the Ah! in its basic guise, without any of the various upgrades on offer. One can only expect further improvements in sound through experimentation and rolling of tubes. One cannot go wrong when choosing this CD player with all its upgrade potential. If the desired sound is not acheived straight out of the box, simply install one of the various and, inexpensive, upgrade options, and talor its sound to your liking. How can you go wrong with a player like that? Similar Products Used: CEC TL-5100Z |

Strength:
I would urge those with a high resolution solid state system that may sound a bit dry to insert some Ah! tube magic into the system.
Weakness:
None I'm a bit of a sceptic, but I must admit this cd player performed a miracle in my system. I have a very revealing solid-state system (Triangle Celius 202 speakers with a Uni-Sync professional power amp). The system provided outstanding detail and range, but sounded somehow dry and "unmusical". As an analogy, my wife was a very technically talented piano player, but (her words) lacked a natural rhythm. My system had the same problem. It was especially noticable with human voices and piano music--I guess because the human ear and brain can distinguish so precisely how a voice should sound. I was thinking that I needed to upgrade with a new amp to make the sound "warmer" or more natural. With the new CD player, I could tell that the problem was solved within the first few seconds. The bass was also improved. The Celius speakers don't grab the lowest octaves, but the Ah! gave me bass I could feel in my feet. I don't detect any loss of detail. I will add the24/192 upsampler ($299) to the player when it becomes available in August. Based on my recommendation, a friend replaced his mid-level Denon with the Ah! He did not notice all that much difference. He said he noticed a slight increase in the soundstage. The difference--he already has a "warm" sounding system (Klipshorn speakers with tube amp) In this case I believe his system already has what the Ah! offers. |

Strength:
sounds like a $1500+ player for one-third the price; flexibility of changing tubes for different sounds; great customer service.
Weakness:
none There are many factors that create a good sound but getting a good CD player is essential. I found that with the CD4000 you get a player that is comparable to players costing well above $1500.00 (you've heard this from other reviewers because it's true). What I enjoy with this CD player is it's flexibility to fine tune your own personal sound charateristics by simply replacing the tubes and op amps. Also, it is very easy (and enjoyable) to get tubes from Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio. He is very helpful and the turn-around time on your order is very fast. I am waiting for the UpSampler (Aug 2002) and look forward to hear how it will further improve an already great sounding player. I don't want to get into describing how this player sounds... clarity, depth, spatial qualities, etc. since the feeling I get from the music from this player is what makes me a satisfied listener. You can't go wrong with this player and the customer relationship with UpScale Audio is one of the best. My current system consists of Blue Circle Amp/Pre-Amp, B&W Nautilus 803 speakers, VPI turntable with Phonomena Phono-Stage, Hms Grand Finale Interconnects, Kimber Select 1030's interconnects, Legend Audio Chinchilla interconnects, Harmonic Technology Pro-Silway II interconnects, StraightWire Crescendo speaker cables, Granite Audio power cables, Quantum Octave, Blue Circle BC86 "noisehound". |
