see review below (This review is a follow-up to my glowing review below). Well, the CD8b is the warmest and most detailed player I auditioned under $800, but it was short-lived. My CD8b is on the fritz and now won't play any CDR media and there's distortion/static on some CDs and not other (and all CDs in question are in mint condition). I've tried the player on other amps and it's definitely the CD8b. Sad, but true. It's like losing a good friend. Email me if you have questions. Similar Products Used: see review below |

Strength:
Great price, digital out, simple design, warm sound, clean look
Weakness:
No detachable powercord The AMC with it's relatively outdated internal DAC is still quite detailed and has a softer sound than my older CD 63 SE. This makes it a nice match for a tube amp. Sound stage and detail are equal to my Toshiba Progressive Scan 24/192 DVD/CD player. All in all I find it to be a decent player, and for the price a real good deal for entry level audiophile equipment. Similar Products Used: Marantz CD 63 SE, |

Strength:
Smooth sound.
Weakness:
No removable power cord. This is only a preview that I will be updating in the coming months, I just want to give my comments on what I think is a great cd player, so far. I just hooked everything up yesterday and I have to say that I am very impressed with what I've heard so far. Moving from my dvd player to the AMC was the best thing I could have done for my system. I may not have a relatively expensive system but that doesn't mean I am a newbie or that I don't know what music or a great system is supposed to sound like. Indeed I do, and the system I've put together is as musical as any system I've heard. But anyway, I am well aware of the benefits of breaking in anything new in a system so I will only say that right out of the box the player sounded neither bright nor harsh as some have said, but very smooth and tubelike, a lot less digital than my previous dvd player. But I will be back for a full-on review in a couple of months. Happy listening. Similar Products Used: Almost everything. |

????????? I bought this unit as a stop gap until the format wars are over. How does one know if a deficiency is caused by the source unit or some other link in the hifi chain. Some of the previous reviews assign sound qualities to cd players that I don't think are attributable to them. How do they know that a deficiency in bass for example isn't the fault of an amp or a set of speakers. These are the more likely culprits of poor bass or midrange etc. This unit is as good as any cd player out there IMHO. Fact is, they all suck to some degree, it's just a matter of how much you want to convince yourself that dollars spent on "high end" cd players make a difference. Wait for the format issues to be sorted out and then spend your hard earned jack on something that brings true return for your dollars. This cd player sounds good to me. It's like those who buy $30 wine because "it must be better, it's more expensive". We audio nuts are constantly buying "The Emperor's New Clothes". Similar Products Used: Denon |

Strength:
Solid build quality. Smooth detailed sound. Bargain at $199
Weakness:
Single CD vs. multiple (but most quality units are). CDR playback but not CDRW This is an excellent CD player and an absolute bargain at $199! It has performed flawlessly. I won't claim that it is anywhere near the best sounding CD player on the planet, but if there is a better unit at this price, I'd be SHOCKED. The music is clean, detailed and from my experience. You'll note that my speakers are Klipsch with horn tweeters. Bright components are excruciating with these speakers and I have no listening fatigue with this player. If you can live with having to get up and change a CD every hour or so and this is your budget range, I don't see how you can go wrong. All i can say is just a great cd player....nice build and of course great sound.
Weakness:
a little ensitive to vibration....and i also noticed that it's can be a bit (just a bit) bright...but that's when the cables and interconnects comes in right?.....and oh just a 1 year warranty....hmmmmm! What more can one ask for a 199 buck cd player? I'm very happy with the sound that comes out from the CD8B. I've had the cd player for a little over a month now and i just can't stop listening to my system......What a great improvement from the past cd players i've had.....it does not even come close to it....with two burr brown 24/96 DAC and an 8 times oversampling at 96khz it is just great... clarity, more detail, great bass...and best of all i don't even have to use my tone controls...which just adds noise when i turn the volume up...it just takes a couple days to get use to it.....it may sound a little flat but it definitley sounds more natural...you'll hear more detail. Anyway, going back to the cdplayer...Where else can you find a 24/96 cd player that SOUNDS great for $199? |

I foudn this unit on a closeout for $199 at audioadvisor. It is the CD8a, which includes balanced outs. First of all, I was very impressed with the appearance of the unit. Short, slim, with a stylish green power button that perfectly matched my NAD C340. Of course, it could be flourescent pink with Barney™ shaped buttons, as long as it had good sound, I would be happy. But I digress. The first thing that struck me about it was that the transport unit had a nice solid feel. However, it seemed a bit noiser than the Onkyo C340 it replaced.. I couldn't hear when the Onkyo was "revving up", unless my ear was an inch or so from the case. With the AMC, I could hear it spinning a good foot and a half away. Again, not a big deal. The remote is functional, but "feels" a bit cheapy. Well, on to the most important thing: the sound! Ah, this is where the MAC earns its stars. Clear, with less digital harshness than I'm accustomed to. Did it roll of the highs a little bit? Maybe. But my system in this room is bright, so that worked quite well. A solid player, at a good price. Great for a transport, with coax digital out. I give it 4 stars. |

Serg, you must have received a defective unit. "NO" sound from the analog outputs? Return it and get another one. |
