Bought this for around 130gbp delivered with a non reading CD drive.

15gbp for a genuine Sony laser and it's a beautiful player, and bona fide bargain!

Still getting used to this player - it's the most high end item I've owned.

The immediate difference I have noticed is the low end detail - I can pick out 3 different bass instruments on a Herbie Hancock recording that merged on my other players.

I personally believe more gains are to be had buying amplifiers and speaker upgrades - you can get good sound from many half decent CD players - however this is a nice surprise to find at the price.

It functions brilliantly as a DAC too - which was why I took the chance on one with a fault on the drive.

Strength:

Pace, timing accuracy, clean, powerful sound. Excellent built quality, good looks

Weakness:

None at this sort of price

Built like a tank, uses separate power supply for all critcal components, able to rival powerhouse from Krell, Classe, Accuphase...

When I saw this guy, I know I am in for a treat. The Chassis is awesomely constructed, the transposrt is held in place using a floating mechanism to minimize vibration. Denon famous Alpha process is ultilized to smooth out digital errors present on the CD format and the signal is pass thru 4 DAC for processing.

The result?

Absolutely smooth, clear, very involving high end sound. This guy is able to take on the most expensive Cdplayers head on!!! Imaging is spot on, timing is exceptional, midrange is clear, bass is tight....I could go on forever.

The Denon S-series stuff are not easy to come by, but if you really happen to spot one, give it a listen....you will be amazed!

Strength:

High quality construction

Weakness:

Not suitable for bass heavy loudspeakers

The Denon player is probably one of the sleepers of the industry and it is quite by accident that I discovered it.

The built quality of the unit is second to none, especially in it's price range. It will rival other players costing several times more.

The sound can be best described as 'musical'. The highs come across very smoothly, almost romantic. The bass is full and rich but may not be suitable for speakers that are bass heavy.

The soundstage is well layered and projects a wide listening window revealing its ability to define inner details that are an absolute delight.

I modified the variable outputs to include the balanced XLR connectors which I use exclusively.

The 2 volt output is sufficient to drive my amplifier directly through a pair of Cardas Golden Hexlink cables. And with this set-up, I retain the ability to control the volume from the remote.

Agree with Cuervo the price/performance for this player is excellent. Bought mine here more than a year ago, for US$1000. I coupled the cd player with a Accuphase Integrated Amp with Chario Reeference 2000 speakers.

The DCD S10 may be as good as Cuervo2 claims, but not so the S10II. I have mine coupled with the Denon PRA S10 preamp, a Bryston 3B ST amp, and a pair of Sonique 5.5 SE loudspeakers. The S10II is cold, uninvolving and sibilant.

I purchased this player about a month ago and I can say that this is an excellent CD player. I should know because i had some great players in the past, such as Sony's CDP-X77ES and Yamaha's CDX-5000. The sound is full with very refined highs and good low end power. (Yeah,Yeah its not a Krell or Mark Levinson you rich snobs!) But do the math: does a $12,000 Krell sounds 7 and half times better than this player NO! I had a Krell at home for two weeks and it sounded good but not $10,400 better than the Denon. Enough of that. Construction is grat too, four separate power supplies, copper plated chassis, 4 20bit Burr Brown DACs, a great analog output stage and not mention that gorgeous gold finish. There is a lot more to it but i like to go a listen to my favorite music. Long Live Hi-Fi

The DCD S10II, the second generation player, is what I consider to be the best one box cd transport/converter for under 3 grand. How do I make this claim? Well, considering the build quality and sound quality, the Denon actually excels compared to Sony's famed XA7ES and Marantz CD-16. Sound is very comparable to Krell's cd 250i due to the similar configuration in DAC's employed, but the Krell player costs 2500 dollars, compared to the 1600 price tag of the Denon player. The Sony sounds dry compared to the Denon, and it costs about $3000. Note that the DCD has a S/N ratio of -118db. This is a very impressive number, considering it touching the ranks of Theta's premier DACs, namely, the ProBasicIII. Theta's top of the line DAC, the Generation, boasts a S/N ratio of -120db.
Overall, the sound of this player is quite dynamic, with excellent low-end management. Sound is definitely not as great as the SF Transport/Processor, but they cost almost 7000 altogether.
