Strength:

Best changer I listened for the money

Weakness:

None so far

I needed to replace my garbage Techniques changer. I listed to alot of various brands of changers and settled for the Denon. The main reason was the HDCD feature the others in that price range did'nt have. I am so far very happy with the Denon. I have to admit that I did'nt notice much of a difference in sound with other changers Ilistened to. I paired this with a new Nakamichi RE-10 receiver, speakers are KEF Q-15's and a Velodyne CT-100 sub. I am very happy with this setup. I think if you are looking for a good cd changer for a reasonable price with HDCD, I know you will be happy with the DCM-370.

Strength:

HDCD clarity and dynamics are superb; price vs. performance

Weakness:

I am usually very nitpicky, but I cannot find any weakness issues with this great sounding player!

I will not repeat many of the superb qualities expressed here previously of this player, but just want to convey that this has to be the smoothest and most musical player i've heard in it's price class, and even 3 times this! Denon has done a GREAT job of providing a player that has gotten rid of all the 'digital nasties' previously associated with the digital medium, for the most part. And HDCD sounds SOOOO SWEET, with an incredibly deep soundstage and VERY impressive detail and imaging!!! I am hearing nuances and discernable improvements thru my Magnepan MG12QR's that i've never heard before!!! I would not have believed it myself, but since I got rid of my previous Sony ES and Nakamichi players, I am able to now get even closer to the music, and isn't this what being an 'audiophile' or 'audio enthusiast' is all about?

Strength:

HDCD, just baout everything

Weakness:

none

For the 251.00 I paid for this, I don't think I could get a better value anywhere. The player sounds GREAT and the HDCD's really DO sound better. Don't spend $500+ for a Rotel if you really can't afford one. Buy this.

Strength:

Very smooth and liquid, analog meets digital sound- highly musical player to say the least; HDCD is just incredible as well; this sounds like a $2000 CD player (and i've heard many)

Weakness:

Absolutely none

This player is just incredible!!! As demanding as I usually am of my components and sound, I was just FLOORED by the way this unit sounds on my non-HDCD disks, and especially my HDCD encoded ones. I was a naysayer all these months, and had my doubts about HDCD technology making a noticeable and improved difference, but when I popped in my first HDCD disc, "Farmhouse" by Phish, I was MESMERIZED by the added soundstage, presence, warmth, detail, and very accurate timbre of the voices and instruments!!! Then it hit me, that HDCD HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ADVANCES IN DIGITAL AUDIO EVER!!! I don't want to sound like an industry parrot for the technology, but as a very critical and objective listener (and industry outsider), I must say that it works and WORKS WELL! At this point, I must say that if you never tried HDCD before, and want a most affordable deal on a quality player, try the Denon. It is a STEAL and the MOST SIGNIFICANT improvement to high end audio, for a ridiculously low price, relatively speaking (I hear these units can be had over the internet for under $250!!!!!).

My audio system consists of:

Magnepan MMG speakers, Velodyne CT-100 sub
Classic Pioneer SX-1080 receiver/amp (from late 70's)
Denon DCM-370
Straightwire Sonata interconnects
DH Labs speakerwire

Strength:

sound quality, hdcd

Weakness:

ergonomics in general

i have been a fan of the sound quality of denon's products for a while now, and this changer is no different. it's very reasonably priced, and sounds wonderful, especially with hdcd's. my gripes are all centered on the usability of the component (these are trivial to me though, i wanted a good sounding cd player, and don't use many of the fancy options). as other people have noted it's annoying that you can't dim the display, you can't turn off the power with the remote, and there's no counter-clockwise disc changing or random button on the unit. these are minor annoyances though, on an otherwise fantastic unit. if you want a changer, but don't want to sacrifice sound quality, the dcm-370 is a great way to go.

Strength:

price, sound, quality, style

Weakness:

funtionality on interface, remote design

This is a product that I must recommend to prospect buyers. This is definitely the best CD changer for the dollar. I got this player from Internet for $225 while the retail price is $300. It sounds clean and sophisicated. One thing that really differentiates this changer from the others is the HDCD encoding/decoding capability. Most brands don't put this function on players cost less than $500. The player looks sharp and handsome. It is not perfect however. The remote looks like one for a 13 inch Zenith TV. It doesn't match up with the look of the player itself. Unfortunately, much of the functions require the use of remote. So you can't hide it from your guests. For example, you cannot select which disk to play from the interface, but to use the remote. When the changer rotates disks, it doesn't sound smooth and it seems to be slow. However, I recommend this player to people who care for the exellent sound and can overlook few minor design problems.

Strength:

Sound quality and extended frequency response.

Weakness:

Same as the rest: Noisy/clunky carousel.

I didn't think I would be able to hear a difference in 3 new CD changers side-by-side. I WAS WRONG! I have never owned the Kenwood or Sony players and probably never will. After listening to my favorite Type O Negative track on the "other" players, I noticed no difference between the S and K brand units. When I fired up the Denon, WOW! I'll swear to 5Hz lower in bass along with a smoother top end. That player was a night/day difference. If you don't think you could hear a difference between CD players, go to your local store and try this unit against any other brand(under $500). The best way to do it is to have two identical CDs and have a salesman switch between the players on the fly. It will make you a Denon believer despite the noisy tray.

Strength:

1. HDCD decoding cheap
2. Burr Brown DACs
3. Excellent sound
for under $300.

Weakness:

Yeah the tray is a little noisy, but so what. You bought the thing for listening to the music, not the tray table--get over it.

Doesn't have a remote power-off, but that's not really a concern for me because my old Marantz receiver doesn't have one either...I'm getting up to turn the stereo off regardless :o)

It's a pretty no-frills CD player, but how much do you expect for $250? Denon put the money into what's important--sound quality.

I doubt they come better than this for the price I paid, and if they do, I haven't seen any.

The sound quality from this unit is excellent. I don't really have anything negative to say about it. I like the fact that it has an optical output. My current receiver doesn't support this, but it's nice to know it's on there for the future. I'll definitely be keeping this CDP for a while, as I see no reason to replace it.

If I had to do it again, I'd definitely buy another one of these. As others have said, yes, this is a pretty "Plain-Jane" unit in terms of features, but what more do you REALLY need than "play," "skip," and "stop" anyway? That's what's important.

Contrary to what some others have said, I've found the build quality of this unit to be exceptional. Furthermore, I don't understand why some of the reviewers assume that because the tray table is a little noisier than most, that automatically means it's not made well and is going to break. I urge others not to listen to this foolishness. I've had the CD player for about a year now. I use it almost daily and have yet to have a problem with it.

To anyone looking for a new CDP, I highly recommend this one. It will definitely give you the most bang for your buck.

Strength:

everything, except...

Weakness:

only a 5 cd changer

A satisfying purchase. For $235 through the net, and sound equal to the DCM-5000, anyone who doesn't feel they need a 100 cd changer should get this. I use this one in my office, with the 5000 at home.
By the way, these players have sound as good as the best external DAC's I have ever used - so there's no reason to utilize the digital out for anything except copying to minidisk. It also defeats the purpose of having an HD CD DAC on board in the first place.
And thanks Ben for the HD CD recommendations; I'll be checking out their mp3's and realaudio's to see if I want to buy them.
