Strength:
Design and build quality, sound quality is exceptional, smooth extended highs, very detailed mid-range and a fast, tight, and accurate bass. The remote is built to last made of all steel. I think it's one of the nicest looking cd player in silver.
Weakness:
No HDCD decoding. IMHO the Jolida is the best cd player for under $1000 and probably better than most even at double the price. Quality describes this cd player not only in how it's constructed but in sound. Built like a tank, all steel construction (no plastic) weighing in at 22 pounds and the remote also is all steel and ball bearing as buttons, it's also built like a tank. The first thing that will strike you if you take the cover off is how simply it's designed. It's divided into three sections with a steel panel dividing each section. The center section houses the Philips CDM 12 transport, at the right rear panel is the tube output stage with gold plated RCA jacks and the left section front is the headphone amp and jack, along with the power supply and 2 large transformers to power the transport and the audio circuit independently. The headphones uses MOSFET, there is not an op amp IC to be found in the whole unit. Also, it uses the highly regarded 24/96 Burr Brown Dac, it's the Dac of choice even for high end cd players. The Jolida comes stock with Chinese 12AX7A vacuum tubes. One of the great things about having a tube output stage is that you can change tubes to adjust the sound that you are looking for. I first tried the GE JAN 5751 and found it to be to warm. The 5751 outputs about 75% of the gain of the stock tubes. I'm currently using 2 Philips JAN 12AX7WA vacuum tubes which gives me smooth extended highs, detailed mid-range and excellent bass response. Depending on your system changing tubes is a easy way of finding the sound that you are looking for. Again, IMHO for the price it can't be beat. Strength:
Price, build, quality, performance, ease of upgrade, 18 month warranty. I feel it's impossible to beat this CDP's performance at this price point.
Weakness:
No HDCD decoding. Transport when opening/closing is not absolutely silent. Well built analog-sounding CDP comes with heavy remote, IEC inlet, stock power cord and RCA cord, 18 month warranty. Mine also came with Sovtek Sovtek 12AX7LPS tubes. Display is well lit, shows tracks, track time/time remaining. Another feature is the unit via the remote can be put in standby mode (tubes are not receiving current in standby). Placed unit on stand on top of a piece of marble that is supported by Vibrapods. Replaced the stock tubes with the Sovteks. Hooked up Groneberg ICs. Took a bit of time (100+ hours)to burn in the tubes and an aftermarket Chris VenHaus cryoed Flavor 1 PC. Results: large soundstage, low floor noise, liquid mids, realistic bass/extension, decent imaging. Highs could be a bit better. Very nice detailing. This is one easy-to-listen-to CDP! Absolutely no fatigue listening to CDs for hours. Two months later - did some tube rolling (including GE 5751 triple mica black plates), and finally swapped out the Sovteks for a pair of NOS Sylvania Gold Label JHS 5751WA triple mica blackplates. Added Herbie's Halo Tube Dampers Model 9 (stock tube dampers are easily removed.) In my system, it seems the Sylvanias are a wonderfully synergistic match. Fantastic 3-D imaging, improved detail retrieval and soundstage, vocals to die for, uncolored mids, better sound all the way around. As you might tell, I strongly believe this unit handsomely profits from swapping out the stock Chinese tubes, the stock PC, and stock RCA. |
