I picked this up from The Good Guys for $229 two days ago.
I hooked it up via the Digital Optical Out and plugged it into my Harmon Kardon AVR75, using my Carver Cinema Series 5.1 speakers.

I am frankly disaapointed with the sound. I have a Pioneer DVD414 DVD player, and it is also hooked to my Harmon Kardon and I find it sounds better.

Let me say that I am NOT an audiophile, and may not know the correct terminology for this, but the JVC sounds dead. Like the high ends are duller, and the low ends are more ...flaccid?

I just doesn't sound as good as my Pioneer DVD player.

On other notes, it does a good job loading disc, and seems to play them with very little noise, where as the DVD player emits a mechanical noise when in use.

The remote is fine.

I am probably taking it back.

I just purchased the XLMC334 and so far I am happy with it. The one feature I insisted on was the display of the artist and or CD title at the push of the button. This has the feature. The Kenwood Mega Changer that I had for one day did not have this feature so I exchanged it for the JVC. The only information the Kenwood displayed was disc time information. Artist names and CD titles only appeared on the display when you were disc searching or stopped the CD from playing. The sound is great and the search for the CD do not take long at all. It's fun to use and, yes, it is a big unit. It is 20 1/2" deep, so be aware of this. As for random search, I never used this feature on any of my CD players anyway, so it's not a big deal to me.

I just bought this changer, hooked it up and I'm very satisfied. It's truethat random play is truly random, but I'm not using random play a lot.
Most important that it has title memory, user files and digital output.
Sound quality is not bad for the price, and integration with RX-1028 receiver
is excellent. Disc loading is quick. My rating:
Sound -4
Features -5
Integration with JVC -5
Quality -5(JVC is pretty reliable)

Strength:

200 Disc Capacity. Optical Digital Audio Output. CD Text. Ability to Enter CD Information. 8 User Files.

Weakness:

Random Feature.

A very solid unit. I believe the JVC XL-334BK is a great mega changer for someone who is on a budget. The price is unbeatable, and there are many other positives to go with it. I love the fact that I don't need to be constantly putting in and taking out my cd's anymore. I can leave them all in this unit and listen to music for hours on end.
The JVC Compu Link System makes entering disc information a breeze. I can enter disc information via the remote control and can see the information being displayed on my television screen(OSD). Also, with the Compu Link System, my receiver, a JVC RX-888V, displays some of the disc information.
A couple of weaknesses are the random feature and the size of the unit. I have one of the earlier produced models from 1999 and the random feature is not quite totally random. I found that my player will repeat some of the songs during random playback. Although this can be quite frustrating, I don't see this as a reason not to purchase one. Also, I had to measure my home entertainment furniture to make sure the cd player would fit inside. The XL-334BK is a very large machine, especially in depth. So, if you want to put this player inside an entertainment cabinet with your other components, you better measure first.

I purchased my XL-MC334-bk in August of 1998. I chose the JVC mega changer over the Sony Models to interface with my JVC receiver. I bought my first JVC product in 1975 and have been very pleased with their products. I have around 400 discs in my collection ,so being able to access 200 of them quickly is a great feature for my system. I purchased my first unit at Circuit City for about $230. I brought the unit home, loaded it with cd's, and put in titles and artists manually. This is pretty time consuming for that many discs. I like to play my collection randomly, so it it was a great irritation when the same songs would play every half hour or so. Some songs played more than others. I unloaded the unit, took it back to the store and exchanged it for another XL-MC334-BK. I brought it home loaded it alphabetically again. I pressed random play and it still the exact same discs and tracks as the other unit. I decided to keep the unit inspite of this drawback because of the synchro record functions with my JVC cassette deck. I charted my random play and found it only played tracks from about twenty discs. I called JVC Service to find out if this could be repaired. They said they had not heard of this problem. I thought this was strange as both players played the same discs and tracks. I was told they would check into the problem and call me back. In the mean time while scanning a Crutchfield catalog, I read the notes about the XL-MC334 and it said the unit chose twenty discs to play from randomly. Well this was pretty discouraging! A hour or so later the JVC Service Center called back and said that there was a repair for this problem ( an IC replacement). I took the unit to the Atlanta area service center. The repair was made promptly, and free of charge(over year since purchased). I have played the unit in random mode for over seven hours now and have not heard the same song twice. Thanks JVC!! Other than the lack of random play in the individual user files, I am now very satisfied with this product and will purchase JVC products in the future.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the manual says you can't play 3 inch discs, but I tried it anyways and they play just fine. Haven't had a problem yet with this.

Strength:

Nice styling, good quality for the price I paid, not tempermental like some cd players.

Weakness:

No category only playback, random could be more random (but I have nothing to compare that to).

For $150 I couldn't resist this toy. I only have about 100 cd's so my random feature seems to work ok, although it seems to pick some of the same songs off the same cd's sometimes. But isn't that truly random anyways? I mean if it was playing a totally different song every time it would be planned wouldn't it? It definitely picks more than 10 cd's over a 7 hour period so I know some people here have something wrong with their machine. It has only skipped once on a dirty cd in 3 months of solid play, so this was very impressive to me after having many problems with Sony players skipping. Especially considering the vibration that my speakers make rattle the house windows on some electronic tracks, and this unit is sitting only a couple of feet away. The sound quality improved immensely after I purchased some Monster Cable for my vintage Sansui 9090DB. Yes the data entry is a bit archaic but it is not totally annoying unless you plan on changing out 20 or more cd's at a time. For the price I paid I am quite amazed and happy at the performance of this machine. You can easily find these units now for the same or less.

I bought this changer to make my 150 CD collection easier to access. But it hasn't really helped. I have a diverse collection of types -
Alternative Rock, Classical, Opera, Jazz, Irish... So I split them
by category, but the categories (and user files) are useless because
you cannot random play within them. If I have a dinner party, I want
to randomly play jazz, for background music while working - I want
rock..., but this is not possible.

I ended up reorganizing (and re-entering for 6 hours) the CDs so the
groups were together, and then I could sequentialy play - a waste. I
was doing better with a six-disk Magnavox changer with 10 spare
cartridges.

I bought the JVC Changer to go along with my JVC receiver, but the
receiver remote is useless for this, despite the "Compulink".
