Strength:
Sounds pretty good. It has a good stereo image with good depth, but it's a little veiled on the top end. It's definitely not harsh, which is good, but at the same time there is nothing about it that will make your jaw drop.
Weakness:
The build quality is compable to a $19 generic DVD player. I'm not exaggerating. This is the lightest, flimsiest piece of gear I have owned. Even the buttons feel cheap. The display lights are designed to burn out. I replaced mine with LED's and really got the see the build quality firsthand with that job. I've heard NAD gear associated with high end gear before, but honestly, it's crap.
You couldn't do much worse than this. It's a joke really. If you can get one for free, it's worth trying, but you'd be much better with most $10 thrift shop cd players. I'm a fan of the Yamahas. They are well built and sound good. Don't be fooled into thinking you're getting a higher end unit with this NAD. This isn't close to a high end piece of gear. This is a toy. Strength:
Stunning sound, especially for the price range.
Weakness:
Unreliable display, tracking should be revised from factory setting to avoid skipping. Well, first, this player gave me fits on a regular basis for years- the display would flicker and various discs skipped unpredictably. Despite this, I stuck with it because the sound was so detailed and realistic. At one point, I bought a Cambridge D300 and burned it in- a great sounding player, but no match for the NAD 502 (I know...) A chance meeting with a local audio-service type resulted in a completely stabilized display and a adjusted laser tracking mechanism("it's just badly adjusted at the factory"). Smooth sailing since then. My system:NAD C370 amp;NAD 502 cd player; Polk Monitor 10 speakers and Bettercable speaker wire and interconnects. Similar Products Used: Cambridge, Yamaha |

Strength:
sounds nice, works with NAD remote, looks like other NAD equipment
Weakness:
notorious for display light problems. Eventually mine too went bad. Then the cd stopped playing music completely. Everything breaks eventually I suppose. It sounds nice. I'm not really an audio nut so can't tell you much more. Similar Products Used: consumer grade cd players |

Strength:
beautiful full sound, inexpensive
Weakness:
terrible reliability, display no longer functions, drawer problems, but still usable I have had the NAD 502 for 2+ years, I have it paired with a Creek 4330 Integrated amp and B&W DM302 speakers. The sound is fabulous, not a flaw in sight, but unfortunately the display gave out after 1 year and the drawer began malfunctioning 8 months after I purchaced the piece. When the CD player is turned on it will forcefully pop open, make some disconcerting whirring noises and after a few seconds will close and function properly. I have found that if I leave the CD player on all the time the drawer problems can be avoided. Aside from these two major problems, the sound is superb and the price was right! |

Not so good mechanics I just bought another NAD 502 (later reffered as NAD2) just for spare parts (price - 30 USD!). It is two years older than my first (later reffered as NAD1). Similar Products Used: Another NAD 502 |

Strength:
Neutral sound
Weakness:
Un-involving One of my buddies had this unit sitting in his rack for a long time without using it. I disposed of my Marantz 6000OSE and brought this home. Due to non-use the moving parts were bit sluggish, so I opened up the unit and put minute amount of white petrolrum jelly in all the gears mechanisms and they became free again. Some of the CDs in my collection was not being detected, I guess moisture/fungus in the pickup lense were to blame. Another friend of mine, who is a genius with electronics took the pickup lense apart and thouroughly cleaned it and reinstalled it again and guess what, all the CDs are playing fine. But as said above the sound is very much neutral (to the extent of being un-involving). Similar Products Used: Marantz (CD63 Mk-II KI Sig, 6000 OSE), NAD (510, 541), Arcam 7. |

Strength:
Great transport only unit. Good stand alone sound. Great value for money.
Weakness:
Build quality. display on these units tend to fail quite often. For the audiophile or music lover looking for a great bargain, here it is. As a stand alone unit it sounds a little harsh but livable. I personally hot rodded my units chassis and transport with an elastomeric damping material that was very inexpensive. Similar Products Used: Marantz, Cambridge, Linn |

I bought this player about 4 years ago, originally for my main system, now it stay with my secondary system in the study room. I'm lucky that my unit has no problem during the 4 years. I understand that this model used to have a lot of problems, then they added a shipping screw (which you have to remove before first time use) and most problems went away. |
