A great CD player. I have compared it to NAD, DenonSony, and Rotel. This one was the best for the price. Dual
20bit converters, 8X oversampling amazing sound. Can be had for $700
from dealers. Very reliable and extremely well built.

Watch out for this machine! Recent production versions are cheaper than the originals (PLASTICS MY BOY!). Home tested original MB-1 several years ago against the ADCOM GCD-700. The two were so much alike that I went for convenience and features. With my ADCOM I get variable out (NO PREAMP!) and ability to change CD's while another one is playing (carousel). I liked the sound of the MB-1 slightly better when using a pre-amp and it was more solidly built (remember MB-1 that I tested was earlier production). My ADCOM is built rather light, however, I have had no problems. Run it into a PASS amp straight and music never sounded so direct and pure. Hear for yourself if you don't believe me. MB-1 gets four stars from me for great sound but 3 stars for cheapened versions. Shame on you Nakamichi!

I have to agree that Nakamichi sound is hard to touch. Still, I have to bring down the rating of this product based on the fact that Nakamichi is going down. First, the cassette decks... I wouldn't recommend this product based simply on the instability of the company. A few years ago... Nakamichi belonged in the Hall of Fame. Now, I think Sony is taking over.

Still, if you find a deal on a Nakamichi... especially a cassette deck, by all means, enjoy! -s

All I can say is that Nakamichi for some reason downgraded their CD players. The withdrawn MB2 is comparible with the MB1s, and kills the MB2s. I don't
understand why they did this. I would never give up my MB2 for the newer
MB1S. I did a side by side with the MB2 and MB2s and honestly, the MB2 sounded
better. I give the MB1S a 4 star for not being any better than the MB2.

I've been a fan of Nakamichi products for some time, mainly because of their tape decks, so I decided to get an MB1S. I've enjoyed it for a couple of years until 3 months ago when it suddenly made a strange noise and read "error" on the display. The shop I took it too still has not even located the parts they need. They're very scarce. I may be out of luck unless they pull the parts out of a hat. I give this player 1 star for poor reliability.
