Strength:

INCREDIBLE SOUND CLARITY, beautiful aesthetically, great value, Music Bank system is slim

Weakness:

Can't switch disks while playing

This is a terrific CD Changer! I was ready to get rid of my Scott CD Player which I received free more than 12 years ago. Like you, I went to audioreview.com to see listeners opinions. Many reviewers talked about sound clarity and other features.

In the past, I have always thought highly of HK, Denon, Yamaha. I have been converted to a Nak fan! The reproduction is great. While I mostly now just listen to MP3s on my computer, I force myself to listen to CDs just because of the great sound. The player reproduces highs, midranges, and lows that you never knew were in the disk.

I also compared the sound from my DVD Player to the MB8, and it doesn't compare. If you listen to CDs, you need a separate component to get the most clarity from a disk.

If you find this for under $300, grab it while you can.

Strength:

Sound stage, strong and controlled low frequency output, build quality, speed of disc change, value

Weakness:

You can't swap discs while the unit is playing

I bought this player as replacement for my Harman Kardon FL 8400. From the opening song of the first cd, I could detect three major differences between the output of the two players.

(1) Bass seems louder, yet more controlled with the Nakamichi
(2) The soundstage seems wider with the Nakamichi
(3) The higher frequency are not as forward with the Nakamichi

I really like the Music Bank system. This player is so compact. It is as small as a single disc player. It seems
very well built and looks good too. Another positive for me is the remote. It is so much better than the Harman Kardon.

Strength:

Excellent sound, optical output, very reasonable price

Weakness:

No remote on/off button

I purchased the MB-8 recently due to the strong suggestion of a friend who owned a previous version (MB-3). My origional intention was to use the optical output to bypass the D/A converters in order to make use of my receiver's higher bit rate. For $249 it is hard to find a CD changer of this quality with an optical output. In the end, I actually found that the Nak's sound, using the internal converters, was better than if I had stuck to my origional plan. The sound is outstanding and I consider this to be one of the best bargians I have ever picked up.

I will agree with all the other posts that the absence of a remote on/off feature is an annoyance. Normally, I would not knock off a star for a minor or "personal perference" item but I think it is deserved here. A remote on/off function seems to be so commonplace that its omission on this unit is absurd.

To sum up: great sound for a great value. Highly recommended.

Strength:

Aesthetics, sound quality

Weakness:

Usability, inability to read slightly damaged CDs

I preface this review by saying I purchased this unit refurbished from uBid (and am now sending it back), so my particular player might have been somehow damaged. I liked the Nakamichi's design, and it's excellent sound quality (although I'm not sure that I can make a true comparison regarding sound quality, considering the few number of other units I've listened to closely). However, I found that the Nakamichi was unable to read CDs that were even SLIGHTLY scratched, or had tiny smudges on them. It would search constantly for the beginning of a track, oftentimes never finding it, other times starting to play the track only to begin to skip immediately. As I said, this might not be true of all MB-8s, but buyer beware...

Strength:

Compact, Great sound!

Weakness:

No "POWER ON" button on the remote

I was looking for a good quality CD player to hook up with my Antique Sound Lab MG-HeadDT (headphone amp) and my Grado SR80 headphone. At the shop, I was undecided between the Rotel RCD-951 and this unit. After a couple of A/B testing, I finally decided to buy the Nakamichi because at the same price it was offering me a 5CD tray and I was not able to tell a difference in sound quality with the Rotel.

I must say that I am very happy with this unit. It is compact. (It is an important issue to me since it is just for a "headphone station"). It looks very nice and sounds great too. Maybe you pay a little more for the Nakamichi logo but Nakamichi = great Sound and great quality.
