Strength:
Good build quality, sound and can be used for many purposes
Weakness:
None (yet) I was always looking for a SACD player for audio only, when I read the ad for the blowout price of $400 I acted quickly. The sound is excellent overall, I am still evaluating, I probably won't use it as a dvd player. Another review to follow. Similar Products Used: First SACD player. Strength:
Incredible SACD performances. Very good CD player and DVD video player.
Weakness:
External construction (many plastics and very poor): CD tray noisy. I am very suprised to listen at home this incredible SACD player. I listened to the system in different fairs and at my usual shop but never I can imagine the wonderful to listen to SACD sound. There isn't one only parameter in which SACD can be considered similar to the old CD. The soundstage, the violins textiture (in classical music), the incredible and precise bass with its huge power. All is under controlled and perfectly inserted in the virtual reconstruction of live music. I bought several SACD to prove and listen to the difference between my CD system that is very very costly, but there is "no story". The SACD 1000's CD performances are good but not exceptional, musical but not live, good enough to listen to old discs without insofference. Anyway, the SACD is another thing! DVD performances are very good but I am not very interested in video. Similar Products Used: Sony 777SACD |

Strength:
A solid performer in CD, SACD and DVD video.
Weakness:
ZERO! I wanted a new CD player which also had DVD-video capability. I read the reviews, and auditioned several models. My first concern, of course, was music play back. I had not really ever intended of listening to the SACD 1000 but WOW. Red book CD play back was amazing, not harsh or "digital" in any way. Very smooth with great detail. The DVD video portion was just as good. Clear, with good detail and color. Very sharp. But when I tried out the SACD side of the unit I was blown away!! Liquid, liquid, liquid. The music was back. ALL the music. It was like listing to aperfect LP. Huge sound stage, detail without the pops and hiss of yore. At the price that you can get this unit for, it is a hell of a bargain. Get one while you can. Similar Products Used: Theta, Rega, Classe, Arcam and others |

Strength:
Awesome CD/SACD playback, Multichannel SACD, DVD, and stereo SACD. All in one and very very good. Compromisless build.
Weakness:
A bit flimsy: the CD tray. A friend of my bought this player and only one day later he sold his Forsell Reference Air/CEC TL2X/ Genesis Digital lens set in favour of the Philips, now does that say something?? One week later I tried it too, and now it is goodbye Tjoeb 4000 from the dutch manufacter AH. Superb in normal CD replay and stunning in SACD. DVD replay is also very good, but I am no expert in DVD so, probabley feature wise it could be better. Excellent product, and for the money, 899 Euro, a joke. A good one that is...... Strength:
Clear sound. Crisp DVD picture.
Weakness:
Slow access. Has to be programmed using the onscreen display. Bigger than my Receiver!! I bought this from an auction site. I wanted primarily a dvd player. Did an ok job with the movies I tried, mostly rentals. My receiver (Onkyo) accepts external inputs, but I had to borrow a friend's speakers (Mission) for the surround. I listened to "Friday Night in San Francicso" on SACD, with Dimeola, Delucia, and McLauglin. The sound knocked me off my feet! I've never heard anything close with CD. I also listened to Carol King Tapestry, and Billy Joel The Stranger. Both were top notch, though I only remember hearing them on vinyl previously. In fact, the SACDs reminded me of my old records (hiss and all). CDs were pretty good. Most of mine are old, and kind of harsh sounding to begin with. I'm using some old Polk speakers for the fronts, and a Polk center channel. Similar Products Used: Marantz CD player. |

Strength:
Outstanding SACD and CD playback. Versatile connections for Audio/Video playback. Built like a tank. Decent remote.
Weakness:
Average DVD playback. No dynamic zoom. No bass management. 6 channel cable hell. When I saw that the price of this player had dropped from 1999 to 795, I decided to order it. I hooked it up to my Denon AVR3300 using the 6 channel external inputs, which I'm told preserve the signal in the analog domain. For SACDs, in addition to the two disks that come with the player, I tried "Boston", in 2 channel, "Brahms Fourth Symphony", in 2 channel, and "Swing Live" in 4 channel. The sound was very warm, and detailed. The soundstage struck me as being seamless, and very wide. I didn't find the lack of bass management to be a problem. For the Swing Live SACD, the musicians were well placed in front, with ambient crowd noise all around. At no time did I get a sense that one channel was being used gratuitously for some kind of effect. For redbook CD playback, I thought the sound was spectacular. I have a huge CD library, and right now am concerned with playback of the CDs I currently own, over a handful of SACD releases. The Philips player had more authority than my current Cambridge Audio D500SE, which is no slouch. DVD playback, however, was disappointing. The player didn't like my "Gladiator" disk, and refused to play it. On other DVDs, the "zoom" function only works when the movie is paused. My $200 Toshiba player, which is 3 years old, isn't going anywhere. Bottom line, SACD and CD playback is topnotch, I give it 5 out of 5 stars for that. DVD playback gets a 3 star rating. There are some Sony players coming out at discounted prices that are worth looking into, but the build and performance quality of this Philips player still makes it worth considering. Strength:
very good picture, AND SACD- multichannel!
Weakness:
finish doesnt really fit to a 1300 dollar piece walking round a hifi- supermarket a guy offered me this thing, reduced by 33%. ok, i thought, lets listen and look at this at home. what shall i say: picture is great, simply magnificant, CD replay is very fine, too, WAS always a weakness of DVD- players, espacially cheap ones.... SACD: i really cant tell, the only piece of music i have in CD and SACD- format is miles davies "kind of blue", and you can hear by the crackling and hissing, it was taken from an old tape. like somebody wrote somewhere else in this page: more software, please. but a good sign is the sound of CD: very good, never annoying by something harsh, so im very curious about some piece, not as old as the miles- thing.... although its a good one! what is missing? DVD- audio? not really. only for stars, because of the lack of SACD- software. Similar Products Used: for the picture: sony playstation 2 sound: sony CDP XA 50 ES |
