Strength:

Relatively quiet

Weakness:

Unreliable memory, poor remote control

I was a little nervous using this unit after hearing some people lost all their titles/artists they input. I was always careful to use the remote to turn it on and off. My unit survived a four hour power failure without losing them, so I thought I was safe.

Unfortunately, I wasn't. The unit lost all my titles tonight, and I had no power failure and I certainly didn't turn the machine off. It took me so long to put them in the first time that I really don't feel like going through it again. I'm going to look into returning it for a refund since there's obviously a problem that Pioneer is unable to fix.

Memory loss ? I have used this player for over a year and The solution to the memory issue is simple. Go to www.wintektx.com or www.cdchanger.com and download WINTRAX ( No, I don't work for them ). This program works with your Pioneer and you can create a computerized CD jukebox program. You download the track information from CDDB ( database ) and the album artwork from any site like CDNOW. I stumbled on this program a year ago - and have used it ever since. The software controls the Pioneer changer. What's even better is you can daisy chain up to 4 of them together for even more selection (i.e. 1200 CDs ). You will not believe how cool this is until you use it. My friends are amazed. And I don't work for the company - I'm just a very satisfied user ! Email me if you want anymore information. There are testimonials at the site as well - but for these Pioneer ( and Sony ) machines there is nothing like this program ! Try it and see !

Strength:

Fast, reliable, convenient, great sound quality.
Can be controlled by software from: www.cdcontrol.com

Weakness:

Memory loss on CD Text on early models.

I read the reviews regarding the memory loss issue on the PD-F1007. I've had three units since August 1998. As a matter of the, they were fresh off the assembly line, since the date code is August 1998 on the back label.

Oddly, two of the three units lose their CDText memory. I was told by Pioneer there was a firmware problem in some models that was fixed later. I can only assume that two of my August units have the older version processor chip and one has a newer revision.

The newer 1009 and 1039 models do not lose memory, I am told by customers of ours.

At the end of this month, our company is releasing a Windows program called PioText which will use a text list and upload the Artist/Album CDText data it to the changers. We plan to offer this program FREE without support. Please drop by and check out the details at www.cdcontrol.com. Sorry for the shameless plugs, but I feel they will benefit anyone who owns Pioneer CDText compatible changers and loves their music.

Best regards, Alan Freeman

Memory Loss

I went out the day after Christmas to buy a new cd changer. I was looking for the Sony 300 disc unit but couldn't find it so came home with the Pioneer for $399 Canadian dollars (I think this is about $275 U.S.) which I believe is cheaper than the sony.
At first I was thrilled with the product, listening to a lot of
tracks that I hadn't bothered to play in a long time.
Today I flipped out. After spending the last 3 days programing in titles something wiped them out.
This seems to be a common complaint in spite of what the man on this list from Pioneer says.
I don't recall ever even shutting the main power off even though according to Pioneer that shouldn't matter and the unit should retain the information for a month.
Right now I'm just too frustrated to even look at the thing.
If I find out the Sony doesn't have this problem this thing
will be going back to the store.
I just hope that Pioneer will read some of these posts and correct the problems rather that call us morons for complaining.

I have been looking at buying a few of these units to store a large CD collection. Does anyone know if the unit plays CD-R's or has a twin laser pickup like many of the other Pioneer players? I was also wondering if anyone knew about the Pioneer F717 CD/DVD 300+1 changer and whether or not it plays CD-R's. Thank you.

I love it! It is very easy to load the CDs, it switches very fast between them, and it is easy to set up groups of CDs. For $299 it is an incredible value. I am blown away by my ability to quickly listen to any of my 200+ CDs.
Complaints: the remote control is ridiculous - labels are unreadable and button arrangment and size is very poor. I, too, would like to be able to plug in a keyboard.

All in all, a wonderful piece of equipment.

Strength:

Don't have to manipulate cd's all the time. Verry stable, rarely skips.

Weakness:

Not enough caracters to write full name or titles of some
cd's. Lost memory once.

I think this unit has a decent sound and it seems reliable
so far. I've had it for approx. two years and had no problems with it except for one memory loss and i think it might be due to a lightening strike. I don't know
why you are scared of turning this unit off or unplug it.
I am connected through my amplifier's switched 120volt outlet. So when it turn my amp off, I remove power from my
cd player and it might stay off for a few days and i have
no memory loss. But i recommend you write your cd titles and position on a list because,it's easier to follow this list than pulling your cd's out to reprogram your cd player in case of a memory loss. I am not an audiophile but i don't really hear much difference between the analog out and the fibre optic output. I am using a Poineer Elite VSX33TX A/V unit with Paradigm monitor 11 v2's front and monitor 3's rear and cc370 center. So i think with this setup i sould be able to distinguish a difference but i cannot really hear much difference between the analog and digital output.

Strength:

Good player for the first 2 years.

Weakness:

Memory Loss. Random play is not very random. Machine jammed and now in need of repair.

I was originally very pleased with this unit except for the fact that in random mode it repeatedly played the same tracks off the same discs over and over again, while some tracks were never heard.
Memory Loss: After I finally input all titles and artists which took me months (This is a very painful process on this unit) I had a complete loss of memory. This happened about a month after I finally finished inputing them. I wanted to puke.
Now The player is jammed. The code on the player, and in the manual, says that 2 discs were in the same slot. I opened the player and removed the extra disc, but now the unit will not turn on. Pioneer has been no help at all, and referred us to the store it was purchased.
I believe I am going to go with the Sony cx450. Costs more, but seems a much better player with features like: on screen display, led remote-for scrolling titles, and a keyboard input for easy title input.
** I actually only paid 180.00 with additional store credits for this unit, so for the price, and almost 3 years of good service, it was a decent buy. BUT I wouldnt recommend it*****
