Strength:

Quality in construction and durability.

Weakness:

None at this time.

What can I say. It works great. Sound and built quality seem well above average. I very much like the random performance on all 300 cd,s and the ability to wire two units together. I am buying a second unit to use as a slave unit to my orginal.

Strength:

Excellent sound, good looking, sturdy construction.

Weakness:

Remote is to small and functions on remote are hard to find. No random play button on unit.

I just bought this PDF17 yesterday and last night I hooked it up and played two cd' (Norman Brown's Celebration and Jeff Loerber's State of Grace). Tried using the analog output which use the players internal 20 bit DAC'S. The sound was pretty good, close to what I'd been use to hearing from my old 20 bit pdm730 six changer. I played the same tracks over using the coaxial digital output which bypasses the 20 bit dac's and uses the 24 bit dac's in my Pioneer Elite vsx-27tx receiver. The sound went from very good to fantastic. The detail in the music was outstanding, it was like a unveiling of the music. The sound stage was simply awesome. I used the direct mode on the receiver which bypasses any audio adjustments or compensations and the result was one of the purest, full, and detailed sounds I've ever heard from a cd. The bass responce while I was listening to State of Grace was awesome. I haven't gotten into all of the other features of this unit yet but just from the looks (the lighted interior and motorized door are really cool) and sound of it I can easily give it a vey high rating and a Elite cd changer for $260.00 plus tax is a pretty good value also.

Strength:

Attractive front piece, internal DACs

Weakness:

Annoying functionality

THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE PDF-27, which replaces the PDF-17. The PDF-27 is the new 300 disc Elite changer. I bought it because I'm using an old Nakamichi amp that lacks optical ins so I wanted the best on-board DACs I could find in a CD changer. The PDF-27 is clearly it if these are your needs. The internal DACs sound great, maybe a little bright. Overall, very happy with the unit. A few functionality issues: annoying random modes, somewhat difficult to navigate the controls w/o remote, and most noticeably, the changer takes a long time to select a disc and then play a track. Generally, though, this is without question the best high-end changer available, except the Denon 5000 which is more than twice as expensive.

Strength:

great sound and features

Weakness:

seems to have some mechanical problems

The mechanism in the back corner of the machine occasionally drops a disc that then jambs the rack and keeps it from turning. I have fixed it twice now by removing all 100 discs, extracting the fallen disc, and then re-installing all 100 discs. What a pain. Pioneer says it won't take exchanges and they don't THINK this is an inherant problem with this model. I'd like to know if anyone else is having this problem with their PD-F17.

Strength:

Very good sound out of the coaxial output

Weakness:

remote could be a little fancier, and easier to use

I just bought this changer and it sounds awesome. I am using the coax output into my DSP-A1. I was using the Yamaha 565 changer but this PD-F17 makes it sound terrible. It took a while to program the disc names in but it was worth it.The sound is so much clearer and defined.

Strength:

Excellent Sound,Looks,True to the Elite Name

Weakness:

Remote Too Small,But Who Cares,I have A Pronto!

For me,this player is the finest addition to my system.I originally was going to purchase the PD-F19. After scanning many reviews, and realizing I would never need the 300 disc model, I opted for the PD-F17. Also, the 8 characters is fine with me, because I use the numbers to select cds. I use the DAC'S in my 27tx,which are execellent, and the extra $250 could be used for other things. I'm extremely happy with my decision. I paid $299 locally, plus a little extra for quality cables.
The sound I'm getting now is like discovering my music all over again.
The first time I heard James Taylor in 5.1 I was shocked that it sounded so good. The clarity is unbelievable!
My advice if your looking for an excellent cd player: BUY THIS UNIT!

I just upgrade my PD-F79 which I was very pleased with for this PD-F17. I had the 79 for only a week but it was long enough to realize that the sound was so much richer than what I got from my DENON dcd-460. When I bring it back to the dealer to fix it, he just receive this PD-F17. I did not have the money to upgrade the 79 but I take a chance and I listen the 17 (plus, I have to say that I was'nt happy to the idea to get a brand new -need to be fixed cd - (but as the dealer said, it is a 96 model and it has never played, it probably only needed a cleanup, but an open player...). Anyways, when I listen the 17, I had to admit that it sound better than the 79 and better than almost every single disc player in the store(in the same range of price). It gives me a clear, harmonic and soft sound. The bass management from the HI-BIT Legato Link is a charm and give me a new perspectiv from many of my cd's.
For 260$US it's a killer and I haven't talk about all the posibilities from that jukebox. I say it loud, it's a great player for the price.

Go for it, que de belles surprises vous attendent avec ce lecteur

Strength:

CD Text, digital output, Hi-bit Legato Link. 20-bit D/A Converter, custom filing, best selection memory

Weakness:

wish it had the jog dial & Keyboard input of the PD-F27.

I really like the sound from this unit along with the versatility of 100+1 disc's. I am building a house with sound throughout and am getting things that I want on sale or clearance in this case. I had bought a Pioneer Elite receiver 2 weeks prior that I really love and saw this on the shelf for $225 when I went back. So I had to have it, especially for that price and I even got them to throw in a 3 yr performance plan ($50 value) for free. I got a steal!!! For all of the advantages the inconvinences of the text setup is nothing. I hooked it up anolog (20-bit) at first and thought it sounded great, but now it's digital (24-bit) I didn't notice any great improvement only slightly clearer. Maybe it was just the dics's I was using. Not sure.

Overall though, I would have to say for the money I came out way ahead on this deal. It's a great match for the Elite system I'm setting up for my new house.

System:
Receiver: Pioneer Elite VSX-35TX
DVD: Pioneer DV-434
CD: Pioneer Elite PD-F17
TV: Sony 27" (next yr Pro-510 HD)
speakers front: Infinity
speakers rear: Polk
In the new house I will have polk or B&W all around. Not sure yet.
