Strength:

Involvement, detail

Weakness:

purity

I just auditioned this CD player today for a couple hours alongside the others mentioned. It came down to this one and the Genki for me. The Rega is very involving, and the detail it found in the discs was truly impressive. Ultimately though, the combination of the neutrality and the clear sound of the Genki won me over, and I bought that. The key downside to the Jupiter, IMHO, is that it finds so much detail, it ends up providing a little more "hiss" or sibilance (is that the word), while the Genki just gave a very pure sound (what you'ld expect from Linn). Still, the Rega is a terrific player - better to my mind than the Arcam or the Naim (which, while I'm on the subject, was way too "in your face" for me!)

Strength:

Depth of soundstage, Top Loading, Benefits from ISO, Much better red book than I've ever had...

Weakness:

Hard to get the crap factory feet off!

When I first got this player I loved the looks but the sound wasn't what I'd expected. So, I bought some Duramas and used some old vibrapods in combination.

I have the vibrapods then mdf then duramas, then the Jupiter. This combination has anchored the Jupiter and has created an excellent sound field that should only improve as soon as the player gets a power cord mod.

After about 300 hours of breakin the player has made an amazing jump in sound quality.

I'm not a Guru but this is easily one of the best players out there!

Strength:

Wide Soundstage, Airy Highs, Lush Midrange, Tight Bass.
Sounds like vinyl!

Weakness:

Single CD Player

Researched the current state of the art in music formats to decide whether or not to replace my current player (Nakamichi CD2 used as transport w/ Marantz SR19EX DAC) with DVD Audio, SACD, or an upgraded one box CD.My take on the current format debate is that DVD Audio, and SACD won't
penetrate the mass market sufficiently to survive long term.
I also believe most people listening to music in stereo, instead of multi-channel format.I then read numerous reviews, both consumer and audiophile, on the top CD Players to narrow the field. I auditioned the Planet 2000 first. It sounded very much like my previous setup. Then I moved upward to the Linn Genki. I noticed immediate improvement in soundstage, highs, and midrange. Next, I sampled the Jupiter. I was blown away!
The soundstage opened dramatically! The vocals and strings sounded lush and melodic. The bass was even tighter than the Genki. I went back and forth between the Linn and the Jupiter. No doubts left. I found the Jupiter to be the obvious choice in the $1000-2000 price range.

Strength:

Very Musical,Nice sound stage, very natural

Weakness:

None so far

The Rega Jupiter is a very nice player and you will have to
spend twice the money to improve upon this player.
I would not say that the Jupiter is twice as good as the Planet, The Jupiter has a better sound stage, greater clarity and more punch, the high and midrange are very melodious and clear without a hint of harshness or shrillyness. The base region is full but somewhat polite
I demod this player beside an Oracle and granted the Oracle is better but not by a lot.
Listening to Tour de Force ,Scott Hamilton ,the saxophones sounded like the real thing as though you were there, rather then sounding like duck calls as some players will make that recording sound.Emma Kirkby singing Vivaldi sounds brilliant and ever so musical. 20 seconds of Scott Hamilton's "East of the sun", on the Jupiter will make you yank out your wallet, give it to the salesman and let him take however much he wants, to take this puppy home .The soundstage of the Jupiter is very good, your speakers will disappear and what you are left with is LIVE music, very realistic, you can pick out individual voices out of a choir and there is no mistery as to where Scot Hamilton and his musicians are positioned individually.
My equipment consists of JM Labs Athena speakers, which are one step down from the Utopias, they are bi-amped with a Canary Tube Amp on the high end and a Classe for the low frequencies, the pre-amps are two separate Canaries for left and right.the same setup was used for the demo of the Jupiter although the speakers were not bi-amped and I had the oppertunity to listen to the Oracle and the Jupiter with equipment that I am thouroughly familiar with.As I said before the Oracle is better but not by much, the Oracle has a more dynamic sound, deeper base extention and a remarkable sound stage, the planet does not lack far behind, the biggest diference being the base extention.
My feeling is that if one wishes to take advantage of the Jupiter, one should have a better then average audio system, and if one is not as critical as I, the Planet will give you a great deal of enjoyment , as it did for me until I made the mistake of listening to the Jupiter.
One last comment, basically the Planet and the Jupiter have the same tonal qualities and do sound similar, the difference lies in the detail of the sound
The Rega Planet 2000 is also a really nice CD player and can make you happy at half the cost of the Jupiter.
Overall the Planet has amore polite sound, very neutral, and the sound stage is not quite as good as the Jupiter

Strength:

Naturality

Weakness:

Price, request of the quality of the rest of the chain

I do not agree with Remy that the Jupiter is so much better than the Planet 2000, The new Jupiter is of course very good, but not twice as good as the Planet 2000 which in itself is according to many people better than the old two box Jupiter. I strongly suspect that Remy compared a straight from the box Planet 2000 to a well run in Jupiter 2000, or that the cables and speakers he used are way to audiophile, I use the Planet with Rega Mira 2000 amp, or QED A230S amp from 1986, or my old Philips 8xEL84 amp from 1958 (!) and am completely happy with the naturalness and detail. See also my review of the Planet 2000, compared to various other goodies in the planet 2000 section

I am basically a musician, with its hear, and this capability to re-shape the musical scene. After listening the Rega Jupiter of a co-worker, I've decided to purchase a Rega Planet saying to myself, I will be able to feel what I felt...
Ahter plugging the planet on, I was disappointed. The scene was staying away and blurred... Whilst Maria Callas was picking high, it was so not natural, so away from me...
I decided then to change the modulation cables for the same vendor I have for speakers cable (MIT Terminator 2 Bi-Wire). I rent some MIT330 plus. As a result, the sound was better well defined, more real in a sens but much more blurred as well! Not penetration at all... disturbing...
I decided then to go to listen for the Rega Amplifier thinking my Proton AP2000 + Proton AMP bi mono (don't remember the name...) was the cause of this non naturality.
During the test, I decided to give a try to the Jupiter 2000 just to check... How suprised I was (listening the Four Seasons of Vivaldi by the Europa Galente) when I switched for the Jupiter... the sound became sudendly true... getting into yourself as an emotion... Neutrality, space and reality were the only words comind to my mind...

The price are basically the double, but its more than worth it... I forgot, my speakers are BC Acoustiques AraxeII (french speakers with Fostex tweeters - 800$). It gives music to reality...
