Strength:

Very good at everything. Great price.

Weakness:

Build quality. Entry level into a very expensive hobby.

Rotel continues to amaze me with their very affordable good sounding equipment. All Rotel has a certain personality. It is very crisp and detailed and trys for a transparent sound. Musically it tends to sound shrill and high, but detail in guitar picks and bells comes out crystal clear. What it lacks is depth. This focus on detail tends to draw everything directly out to the front. Things that sound as if they sould be a background sound come out at the same level as lead vocals. This is not an 'excellent' product, but it does what it's supposed to in it's price range very well.

I'm constantly amazed at how good a complete rotel system for about $4000 including speakers + wires can sound. This is truely the first step into becoming an audiophile.

First time system buyers should look into a nice rotel stereo stack and a pair of nice monitors (maybe sonis farber). Also check out the Linn Classik + Linn Tukans at close to the same price. The Linn combo should produce a richer fuller sound with more emphasis on musicality and voice. They'll lose a little on detail though.

Strength:

Excellent intrument sound reproduction, good on Jazz and Blues.

Weakness:

Lack of bass.

This was a demo unit lend to me by the audio shop. I compared the Roksan at the same time and for the price, the Rotel performed very very well ($ 600 US compared to $1,700 for the Roksan)

I was expecting a lot more from the Roksan (see Reg under Roksan).

The Rotel was very good in the Mid and highs but did not reproduced the tightness that the Roksan did. And the lack of bass was also evident but then again I compared it with a model 3 times the price.

I wanted to test the Rotel 991 but it was not available for demo.

I still have not found the CD player I'm looking for since the Rotel was not smooth enough therefore my next test will be the Meridian and Myryad.

My old CD is a Pioneer PD-7100 dated 1986 and I was really expecting a BIG difference but it was not there.

My system:
Passion Amp 30 WPC - tubes
Reference 3A speakers
Rotel RLC-900 Line Conditionner
Pioneer PD-7100 CD player
Kimber Cable 4TC

Comments welcome on suggestion on other possibilities.

I'm evaluating this unit as a 4 star because of the price of this unit and I rated the Roksan as a 3 star due to pricing.

Thanks
