Strength:

Great sound, ditital outs.

Weakness:

Lots of little buttons on remote.

I didn't think I could tell the difference between cd players on my mid-fi system but it was a noticeable improvement. Smoother, less fatiguing, more transparent than the Pioneer 100 cd changer, kenwood 200 cd changer, or panasonic dvd player.
I have it hooked up to an HK AVR75 and Infinity Overture 2 speakers. Sounds really good with my Sein. 580 headphones connected directly to the headphone jack.
Paid $189 new at UBID.

Hi
I just bought this unit at price $420. I need this unit for second system. Since, i have linn karik for my reference. Oh god this 980 t sound as good as my linn and more natural . Creamy and full midrange. It sounds better and is built better (better transport) than normal sherwood. Before i bought this unit, i listened marantz. The Marantz sounds terrible after hearing the 980 t.

Strength:

sound quality and value

Weakness:

flimsy transport, useless (to me) pitch control feature

Excellent sound quality for the price I paid on uBid ($142). The tag on the rear of the unit showed it was manufactured in 1998, so perhaps the reason it was so inexpensive was to cut losses on items taking up warehouse space.

For being touted as an audiophile player, I did expect a sturdier transport. The transport is nowhere near the quality of my old Nak OMS-4a, and actually not as good as my 1986 Sony! Nevertheless, I bought it for the sound, not for the feel, and it does sound great. Improved sound can certainly be heard with my budget system (H/K AVR20mkII receiver, Genesis 210 speakers), adding dimension specifically.

Finally, Sherwood states that most items in its Newcastle line are manufactured in the UK, though this unit was manufactured in Korea.

I recommend this player if you thinking of replacing and/or upgrading that Sony, Denon, Onkyo or other cd player, so look to see if these are available on uBid. I couldn't find a better value anywhere.

Strength:

clear and distinct sound, price on U Bid

Weakness:

none

If you csn still pick this up on U bid for under $ 300 and don't- consider this a big mistake.
Sound clarity is outstanding. Put on Steely Dan's new CD with a great pair of speakers like the Infinity 0 3's and you want want to go to bed.

Strength:

PRICE!!!!, Looks nice in silver with my silver Kenwood VR-2080 reciever, THE BEST SOUNDING CD PLAYER IVE EVER HEARD!!!!, Oh Yeah..... At 150 on UBID you cant get a better player

Weakness:

none as ive seen in 2 months

I love great audio, but i claim to be no expert,

The unis has great specs, and Burr Brown Dac's

it has coax and optical outs, so you can use you own DAC if you dont like burr brown, i like its D/A, best i ever heard, i know of the probs with the 2080, so you might say it isnt a good test unit, but ive had mine for a year no problems, the cd-980 has the best most beautiful sound ive ever heard from a cd player, it brings my cd's to live acoss my 2080 with bose 901's , the optical out is also handy for minidisc, and if you have a digital ready reciever you can do digital out to your reciever, it is DTS capable and i put my eagles Hell freezes over in DTS in, It is audiotasic, It is so awesome, im only a student, you can not beat the price in a million years without a five finger discount, thanks ubid,

I have seen portable decks at Radioshack for more $ than this!!! how can you go wrong? I have spoke w/ Sherwood and their people are very helpful if you have any ?'S. Highly recommend this CD to anyone. GO TO UBID TODAY & BUY THIS PLAYER!!! Goes great w/ my Sherwood 8090receiver,which is another great Ubid buy at 180. Strength:

sound, Remote volume control, Price, digital outs

Weakness:

none for price

When first recieved I thought that it sounded horrible.....Then I burned it in for about 72 hours or so and yo and behold... a whole new animal!.... Frankly... In my minimalist system it sounds significantly better than either the 67se or the audio alchemy DAC. Significantly more air and hall ambiance. For Example on Magic Bus from "LIVE at the Leeds"(remastered) It does a better job of revealing small cues in the interplay between Daltry & Co. than make this a treasured recording.(Than AA3.0) Also on Brian Adams Unplugged..."Heaven" and "I'll Always be Right There" are resolved noticeably more musically and the original hall ambiance is better preserved. Honestly, I'm a bit perplexed.... It must be because of the excellent Dacs used in this played.... A stone cold bargin...
In case your wondering... My system includes:

Modified Audio Concepts Sappire 2's ... Decware Zen SET amplifier... Kimber PBJ .... and ears.

Strength:

Great sound, detail, and lack of harshness, nice looks. Cheap for the quality

Weakness:

Long burn-in period.Low quality control

At first I was disappointed. U-bid sent me a black (980)while they were bidding them out as "titanium" (980T)

Then there was a rattle inside the box, I opened it and it was a loose screw rattling inside the unit. I checekd to see where it may have come from, and I saw that the chassis wire going to one of the circuit boards was loose, screwed it back in place, closed the box, listened to it, and just hated it, it was so harsh sounding. Then I checked the posts here and saw that some people were talking about a 72 hr. burn in period. I left the unit running for three days, and I listened to it again. What a change! It sounded smoother and live. Now I have been running it for probably about 85 hrs. and the sound keeps getting better. In A-B comparisons it beats all of the three machines I listed above. No more hissy cymbals, crackling bells, ringing piccolos, whining violins, ear splitting trumpets I have been accustomed to hear from CDs, smoothe and clear. I am satisfied. But if I had not caught that loose wire, I probably would not have been.
