Strength:

Clean pure uncolored sound.

Weakness:

A little slower on disc changes; but just a little.

Replaced the regular Sony with a used ES model. Noticed the difference. I was unsure if I would but there was an element of clarity that surpassed a fine non ES model.

THus far I was impressed by the volume control on the remote and it has functions I don't care to learn about .It just sounds very, very clean.

Strength:

Excellant sound

Weakness:

Won't play certain homemade cdrs, especially Memorex cdrs.

I feel compelled to write a note of caution to anyone buying this unit.Beware that it may not play home-made cdrs, specifically those made on Memorex cdrs. After much initial trouble with this unit that may have resulted from shipping, I discovered that it would not play my cdrs made on Memorex discs. That is frustrating to someone putting his record and tape collection on cd.Again,I'd like to caution anyone buying this unit,it will not play Memorex cdrs. With that complaint out of the way,if you are a not a big user of cdrs, you may enjoy this unit. The sound is crisp and clear, even using low end RCA plugs. It comes with gold end plugs, but I didn't use them yet.Nor have I tried the optical plug. The dymanic range is excellant with nice defined bass and smooth treble.I can't complain about the sound at all;actually,it's one of the nicest cd players I've heard. For anyone who has used Sony products before, the unit easy to operate.Nothing exciting or difficult. The remote is the typical Sony remote.Again, nothing exciting. If you can find this unit on sale,it might be worth it.If I had to do it again,I'd buy it locally and bring some of my home made discs to make sure it plays them.

Strength:

Nice design.

Weakness:

Won;t play CD-Rs without much digital distortion.

I have had serious problems with this unit playing CD-Rs. When I first got it, there were no problems. Now, it generates tons of digital noise with virtually every CD-R I own. I sent it in for factory service under the warranty, and they replaces the laser and the motor. Still no improvement. I'm to the point where I'll have to go buy a different model. Caveat emptor. NB: I was using the digital optical out to my B&K Reference 20 preamp and Sunfire Cinema Grand amp.

Strength:

Excellent sound quality, easy to operate, attractive design, solid build quality for the price (superior to competitors such as Denon and Onkyo), made in Malaysia (not China), 5 YEAR PARTS & LABOR WARRANTY, excellent remote, can change 4 discs while one is playing, can easily input disc titles for 255 discs so you can tell which disc is which, clear and easy to read display, far superior to competitors in same price range. I was also considering the Sony 5-disc SACD/CD player (I forget the model number, now discontinued) that Sound Advice was selling for $200- they had a few units left. I've read it is a fantastic SACD player but the CDP-CA70ES is better with regular CD's. There aren't enough SACD's available for me to choose that player over the CDP-CA70ES. Plus the CDP-CA70ES has a far better warranty.

Weakness:

No coaxial digital output (has Toslink only), can't turn off or dim the display.

Great player, great value, great warranty! I bought this player to replace my Sony ES single-disc player in my office. It was 11 years old with thousands upon thousands of hours of use and the laser went out. It was the second from the best model at the time and retailed for $900. The Sony ES CDP-CA70ES 5-disc changer I replaced it with has even better sound than the old player had. It has a clear, exciting, and involving sound through the Sony TA-F444ESX integrated amp and NHT SB2 speakers it is connected to. My office rocks, to say the least!

Strength:

Excellent build quality. Quiet changer mechanism. Intuitive programming and text naming.

Weakness:

Sound quality. No remote power on/off control. No button for individual disc selection (must hit disc key then disc number) on remote. Remote has no back-light.

I recently bought this unit to replace a 7 year old Sony cd changer that finally started to have problems after heavy use. I researched the Denon DCM-370 and the Marantz 3000/4000 series and the 70ES seemed to be of superior build quality. After a 72 hour burn-in, I'm disappointed in the sound quality, which is contrary to the other reviews posted here. I ran this through a Yamaha DAC with much better sound quality than the Sony DAC provided and even through a JVC DAC with the same result. The Sony has great bass extension but sounds thin in the mid-range. Spatial quality is fair, but not even up to the JVC's ability. Highs are clear and generally not harsh. I wanted an interim cd changer until the war between HDCD, SACD, and DVD-A was sorted out, but unless the sound quality improves over the next week, I think I'm back in the market for a new player and I will go with HDCD on this round.

Strength:

Easy to use remote,Sony quality, nice wide slots for your fingers to get under discs in the rotating tray(unlike a Denon), high level of sound quality.

Weakness:

Non back-lit remote, no coaxial digital out, useless(to me) features such as program files and delete files.

This was a replacement for a defective(IMHO)Denon DCM-370. I couldn`t return the Denon as too much time had passed so I bought this. I can say that without any doubt if you have high quality amplification you will like this player. Very smooth and musical. The sound just seems to flow effortlessly from my speakers, almost as if the air were dancing around me. Don`t get fooled into thinking you need a HDCD player, you don`t. This single $270 piece of gold saved the other components in my system from being traded-in. The degree of accuracy and resolution is amazing if not unheard of in this price range(Sony ES quality testimony) I`ve tried this player both ways; as a stand alone player and as a transport using the DAC inside my reciever,a Rotel RSX-972, with excellent results in each set-up.

Strength:

Disc Exchange while playing, Optical output

Weakness:

Takes too long to switch from one cd to another

Overall the Cd player is good. The only thing that bothers me is the time that takes to switch from one CD to another. That's about it. I like the feature that you can switch CDs while it is playing. It has many other features that I have not used yet. For what I paid for $215 + S&H, it is really a great CD player. I bought it from the OADES Brothers, a great purchase experience. (www.oades.com)

Strength:

sound quality, disk exchange, value

Weakness:

none so far

It was time to upgrade my cd player and I prefer the 5-disc to anything else. I wanted quality so I looked at the Sony ES line. I was thrilled to find one under $300. I actually paid $260 from my local dealer. I do not trust on-line buying yet. So I compared the 70 ES to the 80 ES and could not notice any difference except the $200 increase of the 80 ES. So I bought the 70 ES and spent the money I saved on some Kimber Hero's (GREAT CABLES!!)
The quality of sound coming out of my B&W 603's is incredible. It is crisp and clean. My wife closes her eyes and feels Nina Simone is singing in our living room. Those that want a great CD player should invest in Sony ES. In fact just get the 70 model and spend the rest on great cables. Five star rating all the way!!!
