I bought this peace of crap back in 2001 at best buy. I hate it. i went through all of the trouble to name all of my cd's in this stupid thing i came home one day turned it on and the screen said all erase and it erased all of the names. i was pi$$ed so i went ahead and put all of the names in again and about a month later it did it again. i've got a kenwood 200 disc changer that i've had since 97 and it's great. avoid the sony at all cost. of course now days who uses cd players i still use my kenwood periodically and i use my numark tabletop scratch cd players for dj purposes but everything else is on digital media such as my computer,mp3 player, or flash drives

Strength:

Holds 400 CDs, can be daisy-chained to further increase the mega-changer capabilities.

Weakness:

Size, size, size.

Sound is great, the player works as advertised. My only problem with this unit is its size. As another reviewer below notes, it doesn't look that big at first . . . until you try to put it into a standard entertainment center. I had to make some ugly cuts into the back of my new entertainment center to make room for this thing. The unit is deeper than almost any standard entertainment center, and pretty much the entire back of it must stick out further than your shelf will allow, without opening up a space in the back. If this isn't a problem for you, $300 or less for a player that can do all this is a very good deal.

Strength:

umm...

Weakness:

disc labeling is still a chore (2 days), cannot overwrite "cd text", ANNOYING AND BRIGHT AS HELL BLUE LIGHT, questionable build quality, weak sound quality, size

i regret ever buying this thing. i had to cut a hole into the back of my entertainment to accomadate this thing, and now i dont even have the unit anymore, so i had to repair my entertainment center. let's see, where to start.

the unit does not recognize all keyboards. would not recongnize mine, even though it is less than 6 months old. so...guess what. i sat in a chair for 2 days turning the stupid knob and entering all 400 discs. this is so archaic that it makes you wonder what kind of monkies are running the show at sony.

once loaded...the real "fun" began. first, that stupid blue light is so friggin bright i considered smashing it. if you're just listening to your tunes in the living room at night, dont worry about falling asleep and leaving the unit on. the light is so bright you can see it through your closed eyelids, so you wont fall asleep. it drowned out all my nightlights/candles etc., ruining the nice ambience of my living room. Strike One.

next, after loading all of the cds, i went to play one of my cdrs. oh sure it plays them ok, but guess what. if you dont label your cdr text when burning a cd, you're screwed. the cx-400 automatically defaults to display cd text information, so i had about 2 dozen "Custom Music" titles in my disc file for each of my cdr's, so i had no way of knowing which one i was selecting. this is aggrevating as hell. Also, on cds where cd text is present, it couldnt even display THOSE right. it would display weird symbols, and almost every song title was misspelled. Strike Two.

Sound quality. Strike 3. Even using digital output doesnt even seem to help much. very weak sound. My dvd player sounds far superior, and thats even a bottom of the barrell model.

there were also some weird things i noticed. when going from disc to disc, say #121 directly to play #225, the unit will make a complete revolution to the right, then completely to the right, and then it would play. this whole process takes about 30 seconds.

i could go on but you get the idea, and read some of the reviews below. this thing is really a piece of rubbish and not worth the money and inconeniece, I wasted 2 days of my life loading and unloading this defective piece of S#@#@!! Save your money.

Strength:

It holds 400 cds!! Great features.

Weakness:

Like everyone else: SIZE

Disregarding size, this unit is a great purchase. I have not had any problems with this unit yet and I have been using it for about 9 months. I have experienced occasional difficulties with using a keyboard to type in disc names, but that must be a compatibility problem with the keyboard and the player rather than an internal problem in the cd player. I think the sound is good, not exceptional but good. But I am using the analog and not the digital outputs. Overall I love this changer. I most likely will be getting another one to accomodate my growing cd collection. It does take some time to play songs in shuffle mode, but it holds 400 discs and that is to be expected. I would recommend this player to anyone that wishes to get all the conveniences of its capacity without a high cost.

Strength:

400 Discs capacity, easy to setup and use

Weakness:

big, would be nice if you could name the tracks as well

I like the CD player. You can't ask for much more than 400 Disc capacity. I very much like the naming features. It shuffles and plays very well. I do notice a deteriation in sound quality when I let the CD player use its own D/A converters. So I use the optical input to my Sony DB-930. The sound is cleaner and more dynamic when I configure it that way. Plays CD-R's with no problem. A very good deal for the money.

Strength:

Capacity. Versatility.

Weakness:

Nothing new.

I've read all the reviews, including those for the -300 -335 and -450. I didn't read any other manufacturer reviews since I wanted to keep my sony receiver and jukebox working together. Since you'll probably read all the other posts, I have to say that I haven't run into the disk shuffle problem. My player works as advertised. The manual is a little lacking. I have a Sony ES333 receiver with the two-way remote; however, the remote seems to only see 300 of the 400 disks. Doesn't matter right now since I only have 170 disks loaded. Keybord input is OK--just watch what you type. I _highly_ recommend trying out the shareware visitrax at www.synapsa.com--you just insert your cd into the computer and it loads it and all tracks into the database. It is one of about 3 shareware programs I have registered for over the years. Very helpful. You can load everything to see if you want to pay. Worth a try.
Anyway, the player's virtues, are many. I was sick of hunting for the CD I wanted to play, then inserting it into the old player I had. I got rid of about 6 square feet of space by just loading the player and boxing the CD cases. I was bummed that this player doesn't have the CD insert folders the -300 had. Hard to find the -300 anyway. The -335 doesn't have them. Visitrax makes up for it a little, but I still want to have those folders available for CD notes, etc. I loaded the player un-organized. You can load it alphabetically, etc if you want, but it won't do much good. It does take about 10-15 seconds to change disks, but it isn't much better if the disks are next to each other. You get used to it anyway. I don't find it a problem at all. What the -400/50 have the others don't is Artist mode. I say it's worth the extra 50 dollars for the -400. You can imagine why. Having the CD's available, and referencing a piece of paper for the slot number via visitrax or your own product is so much easier than loading a single player. I find myself using all disk shuffle since even tho I have many flavors of music, I did buy all the disks for a reason, and like all the tracks. I can't say enough about it. Don't see any reason why to buy a single or 5 disk player. Other than that, the other posts's strengths and weaknesses are good. Decide for yourself. I tried a -335 from sears for 260.00 out the door, then found out about the -400 and got it from yahoo shopping (Uncles stereo) for the same price. Full sony warranty. Returned the -335. Only difference is that a Sears bought model can be returned in a couple months. Not a big deal. Highly recommended.
