Strength:

Performance/price ratio

Weakness:

Transport is a bit noisy

I have an SL-PD10. From reading the reviews it appears that this is the same as the SL-PD8 only with a speed control to change the pitch.

I found that the sound of the unit improved after several hours of use. It seems smooth and detailed with plenty of clean and detailed base. I haven't AB'd it with anything else, but I thought it was equal or better than a $300 Marantz unit I tried on my system.

For the price, I highly recommend the SL-PD10 which costs about $50 more than the SL-PD8. If the units are truly the same sonically, I'm sorry I spent the extra bucks since I don't need pitch control.

Strength:

Great sound at a low price, digital out, play 4 change 1

Weakness:

none at the price

i recently purchased a marantz sr7000 receiver to replace my old technics (which by the way was still working like a horse after ten years -- but i wanted home theatre)
i needed a new disc player because my old sony did not have a digital out and it was skipping a lot.
as soon as i hooked the slpd8 up i was impressed-- no, stunned, at how much different -- how much better my cd's sounded. i don't know if it is the difference between a digital and analog out -- or if my sony was just that crappy.
either way, it added a ton more bass and more clarity.
it's hard to believe this thing is only $125 at best buy.
i never really tried any high end cd players... i didn't want to spend the money... i'm glad i didn't. i'm completely happy with this one and would recommend it to anyone

Strength:

price ($120 at Best Buy), performance, optical output, remote is easy to use

Weakness:

carousel a little slow, but hey, it continues to play when the carousel is commanded to rotate. Display too bright in a dark room.

I just wanted to boost the rating on this feature-packed, economically priced player.

I did not realize how many features this player has, and what a good deal it really is, until I purchased a Marantz CC400 from a dealer going out of business ($225). You can read my review on the CC4000.

I chose this player simply because it has all front-panel controls ABOVE the carousel. Like I said, I did not realize how good it really is until purchasing the Marantz. It is a fantastic player for the price. $120 at Best Buy in March. Maybe online for less??

Strength:

(I'm going to only comment on the design, as my previous system is a $30 crappy Sony boombox) pretty ergonormic design actually. track buttom 1 to 10 is on the front panel. (however, 10+ need to press 3 buttons, for example in my other diskman I press "+10" "7" for track 17, here I press "10+" "1" "7" for track 17)

Weakness:

none for the price

Here is the reason I post this review. I only want to point out that this model doesn't have "repeat 1 track" mode. I either "repeat whole 5 disks" or play once only. I don't think it has "play this disk only and then stop" feature either. It will try to play every disk once. So usually I don't put a lot of disk in it. I see the 5-disk tray as a feature that let you set up the next (2) disk while playing.

It has a very cool ID Scan mode that search for 10 second of "loud" section of each trach and play it, much better than the intro mode in my rio 300 that only play the first 10 seconds. However I havn't use it yet.

"spiral" mode play first tracks of all disks and then the second tracks of all disks... (why)

There is a cool feature for recording songs to cassette in which it will ensure the cassette wouldn't change side in the middle on a song after you tell it how long one side of the tape is.

Another thing I don't like is that it doesn't spit out the tray immediately if you just turn it on. It will run the tray a round before spitting it out, which costs 4-5 inpatient seconds. Oh well maybe I don't need to trun it off.

Again, please disregard my rating, I don't want to give a rating that effect the current rating. The way I pick this model is just
1) look for cheap models in J&R website
2) check their reviews in audioreview;
3) look for high rating reviews
4) finish transection within 2 minutes :)

I'm a big fan of web review, if I bought a bad product, it has to fool a lot of people first!

Strength:

Rated #1 for reliability. Delivers superb performance at an affordable price. 5 disc carousel.

Weakness:

comes with no remote, but still rarley standard equipment.

Virtually any CD player can produce superb hi-fi sound--accurate and free of coloration or distortion. Major differences are in convenience, not sound quality. My recomendations would be, look for ease of use, then zero in on the best deal. Best time to buy a CD player is, late summer and early fall closeouts and of corse the month of December. This unit also comes with multicolored and uncluttered front panel display, with clearly labeled main buttons grouped together by function, which also makes it easy to produce tapes from CD's. Also the SL-PD8 comes with a digital optical out. Best in regards to all.

Strength:

very cheap. good sound. good controls, on both remote and front panel.

Weakness:

none that i noticed

i managed to get this player for about $90 as it was a shelf model, and came with a remote from a sl-pd888 (which works fine) and no box. the sound quality seems (to me) very good, even through a technics sa-ex140(see review under sa-ex110). it is also very good with scratches, and i hear almost no flaws in the music unless i really messed that cd up. it is also nice to change 4 discs while one is playing

it is nice to have almost all the controls on both the front panel and the remote, so i can be lazy, or operate the unit even when the remote is MIA. i highly reccomend this cd player to any one looking for something inexpensive with good sound.
