Great sounding CD player. Way better than the Sony and Teac. My only real problem with this CD Player is that the tray noise is very loud. Louder than most changers.

This cd player has been very faithfull in that it hardly ever skips on me and I have a few CDs that are in terrible condition. It gives a very open and large soundstage. Some people may find that it sounds a tad bright on certain recordings. I have on a very few recordings, depending on what style of music. I can't promise you that it's the cd player, it could be the receiver or the speakers, but my vcr playing through the receiver does not sound bright to my ears.
Far as reliablility, I would like to state that I have had no problems with it. Far from the truth though. I've returned it 3 times (and I keep it in prestine condition).
First time, within a month of purchasing, it was starting to skip on almost everything including brand cds never opened. I took it back and the salesperson gave me a new one on the spot, which I was grateful for. Second time, year later, it was producing a very audible click/pop on my left speaker when I either stopped or skipped a song, after narrowing it down to the fact it was certainly my cd player, I returned it again. Three weeks later it was returned to find it was doing the exact same thing (this I do not blame on Yamaha), the store is authorised to service what it sells. That was the third time, so I've only had two problems with it.
Otherwise it's been a good cd player, but however does make me wondering whether or not whenever I upgrade another component if I will consider a Yamaha product.

I want to buy one of these cd players. People say there is no power button on the remote. This is because yamaha wants you to buy their kick @$$ receiver. I have that receiver and i like its lots. The receiever remore has everything the cd player remote has but just with the power button!

I have had the same problem as some of these other folks. I enjoyed the Yamaha CDP until just under a year after buying it, when it started skipping like mad. Got it replaced under warrenty (major nightmare) and now, less than a year later, it's down hard again, and not being fixed. The sound was good, but c'mon, what's the use if the damn thing won't work reliably. Yamaha CD players don't last, that's the bottom line. Stay away from them. I kept mine in pristine condition, and it failed on my twice.

This was a great CD player until about 6 months after I bought it. It started skipping a lot and not recogizing disks. Brought it in they replaced the laser pickup It was fine for another 8 months. Now it's completely dead, the laser pickup failed. It's $120 to fix it. Instead I'm going to the Technics SLMC60, on sale for $150.

Love my Yamaha Reciever, never liked the CD player. The sound was always fine but it felt very poorly put together and seemed light-weight and flimsy. I don't know if mine was a bad example or typical but I'm not going to try third time.

I have just had the CDC-565 for 1 week. Before buying I've shopped around for Sony, NAD and Denon as well. I really had my mind fixed on the NAD 523, were it not for the (damn good) Mirages hooked up to a NAD 714 receiver/amp. Man, I could clearly hear a (very) high-pitched noise, which would've been masked by a worse-sounding speaker. So much about the 20-bit DAC hype, NAD!
Then the salesperson suggested I try the CDC-565 ($100 cheaper than the NAD) which was wired to a Yamaha AX-395 and a pair of NHT 1.5s (better clarity, more transparent than the mirages, in my opinion). The system performed flawlessly (for a $1100 system, remember), the NHTs being the most transparent and honest sounding speakers I've ever heard.

But getting back to the CDC, I strongly recommend it for anyone on a budget ($200!!!). There was also another Denon cd-Denon amp-NHT 1.5 system on display, and the Yamaha set easily trounced them, for little extra money! No audible noise whatsoever from the Yamahas, I was hooked!

Now I've had a Yamaha laserdisc player and a Yamaha DSP-A1000 home theater amp for a while, but never considered them as "serious" contenders for sound quality. I changed my mind.

Now for those NHTs, $500... hmmm... :)

I have had the 565 for 6 months with no troubles. The unit reads all CD's I have loaded with no skipping or jamming problems. The sound is somewhat bright, even after break-in, but altogether tolerable. Mated to my Mirage FRX-7's, the 565 delivers good value for money - I paid $260 CDN. As mentioned by others the CDC series has no ON/OFF button on the remote and the shuttle is noisy. The chassis buttons are not operable when the CD tray is open. This unit is an entry-level player in the range and performs well for what it is. My next player will be the Rotel 975, which I hope to get within a year.

As far as the above reviews saying the player's laser pickup fails, I have not had such problems. I've had the player for 3 years and it is by far the best sounding player I've ever owned and the price can't be beat. Much better than any of the Sony players I've owned. I've had three Sony CD players die on me because of the laser pickups. The first one was still under warrany so they gave me a new one, which broke three years later. The other one was a portable CD player that died after about 5 years. I've also had a Sony Tape player die on me as well. I wouldn't recommend buying any Sony product other than their receivers or TVs. The sound quality from the Yamaha is far better than I would have expected for a $120 CD player. Bottom line, if you're on a budget and want a quality CD player buy this Yamaha.
