Strength:

Yamaha sound

Weakness:

Remote

I wanted to upgrade from the Sony unit to a 5 disc unit and looked at Audioreview for Hall of Fame units. I bought the Yamaha based on other reviews and the fact that I have been a Yamaha fan now for 25 years. The unit does not disappoint. It "seems" more solid than many I looked at in stores. The tray operates silently, and I like the exchange disc feature that allows the current disc to remain playing while new ones are added.

I use the optical output to my RXV 665 home theatre receiver and the sound is phenominal. Especially when switching between RCA output and optical.

Strength:

Absolute clarity and smooth natural sound.

Weakness:

Nothing major.

I only had this CD player only 4 days and I'm absolutely pleased by the way it sounds. The voices and instruments are so sweet and natural that I can't believe it. I have even attributed some of my previous sonic problems to my amplifiers; however, with the addition of this CD player the entire system sounds so good. I recently auditioned a Sony CDP-CA9ES which list for twice as much that does not even compare to this player!

I do have some very picky minor problems:
#1
The variable loudness control needs more resolution.
The lowest level is too loud. Since I'm directly driving my power amps from the CD player this is important. Especially to my neighbors at night. :-)

#2
The size of the player is not the standard rack mount size and needs more room to fit into my cabinet.

#3
The remote is flimsy. I should just go ahead and order a replacement right now since I plan to keep this for a long time.

That's it. Just 3 very very picky issues.

My current system is:

Yamaha CDC-775 (Of course)
(2)Onkyo M-504's (bi-amped to the BP-2002's highs and mids)
Definitive Technology BP-2002
Yamaha M-4 power amp
B&W DM602 series 2

Note: Again. I have no pre-amp but I have a Yamaha TX-950 tuner I don't use.

I highly recommend this system.

Strength:

Sound clarity, definition. Feature packed, build quality and price.

Weakness:

Flimsy remote. A jog dial would be nice.

I've had this component connected to my Yamaha stereo receiver for over a week playing continously.
All I can say it's sounding better and better. I'm playing all my old CDs and now hearing things I've never heard before, especially at the end of the tracks when it begins to fade out, I can still here detail right upto before the next track is played. I've listened to Denon's CD player range, whilst very good, I do like their DCD-755AR single disc model and have read other reviewers stating they had some problems with their muti-cd players. But for their prices, I couldn't go past the Yamaha when it came down to the best performance and value for my money.
The build quality is excellent but the supplied remote felt quite flimsy. I only wished they had a differently shaped remote because my Yamaha RX-596's remote has the same shape and sometimes would accidently use the wrong remote and call some other unintended function!
However, I would like to see a jog dial on the front panel, which a few other brands are now starting to introduce into their CD players (ie.Denon). And this would remove all the track slection buttons, that clutter up half the front panel.
I highly recommend anyone considering a CD player to audition this fine piece of affordable equipment.
5 stars all round.

Strength:

construction, ease of use, sound

Weakness:

on board functions

Just purchased this unit. Sound is excellent, easy quiet transitions during random play. Smooth natural sound. Women's vocals sound so clear. Really picks up the nuances of the recordings. I've heard things I've never heard before. Teamed with a Sherwood Newcastle 925 and Wharfedale Modus 8 speakers. Purchased from Audio Excellence $265 plus $20 dollars S/H and insurance.

Only complaint is I wish there was a random play and disc mode button on the machine. Oh well hope I never lose the remote.

Strength:

Awesome sound, CD text, fast/quiet tray and pretty much everything else

Weakness:

not a single one! The no power button on the remote is easily fixable by plugging into a switched outlet on a receiver!

This CD Player is just awesome! I had originally bought the Denon DCM-370 to replace my Optimus, and compared to the Yamaha it pretty much sucked. Other than the HDCD capability of the Denon, there wasn't anything it did better. The analog sound quality of the 775 is FAR superior, so was the digital for that matter; the tray is much quieter and much faster; the display is far less annoying, and more flexible. I love the CD text, even the only CD I own that is CD text encoded is the Dixie Chicks/Wide Open Spaces. I also like that you can program in CD Title and Artists for up to 100 CD's.

Right now I have the player hooked up a fairly cheap (paid $279 last Christmas) Kenwood VR-309 Dobly Digital/DTS receiver running into a pair of Klipsch Legend Series KLF-20's, but after hearing the quality of this CD Player, I plan on adding a Yamaha receiver to my collection as soon as my wife lets me! I HIGHLY recommend anyone looking to spend $300 or less (especially those in the military!) check this CD player out, like I said it's just awesome!

Strength:

onboard DAC provides excellent sound, solid build quality, optical digital out if you want to use it

Weakness:

haven't found one yet

I have enjoyed the sound of my Harman-Kardon FL-8300 for about four years now, but the changer's carousel mechanism got so bad about not recognizing discs that it became unacceptable. Lengthy research online and a bit of hands-on testing led me to the CDC-775 (I considered Denon, Rotel, and Onkyo as well, but the combination of cost and reliability helped narrow the field). The onboard DAC on the 775 is exceptional (I no longer use my receiver's DAC, which I did with the FL-8300). Great sound, good interface (unlike the FL-8300, which required you to reach below the open carousel to advance to the next disc when loading CD's), and a good solid feel made it an easy choice; the fact that it reads CD-R's flawlessly sealed it. I hope to have this player around for years to come.

Strength:

Digital output, transparent sound

Changer

I was actually thinking about Sony, but when I went out to buy it I was told about this new model.
I bought it just to try - never liked changers anyway, but the quality of the 775 really amased me.
So I guess I am keeping it.

Strength:

attractive slim casing, accurate musical presentation

Weakness:

shallow soundstage, diffuse vocals, upper mid-bass emphasis

I have been auditioning 5 disc changers for several months now in the $300-500 range. I went out and got the 775 after the previous reviewer had preferred it to the the Sony CA9ES. I had gotten the Sony on clearance so it was only a little more than the Yamaha, not the list price, which is twice the price of the Yamaha.

I had the advantage of hooking up the players with the same intergrated amp, a Yamaha 1020, both with a set of Monster Reference 2 cable (.5m) The speaker used were a pair of Wharfedale Sapphire 83's, with basic Monster XP cables, bi-wired. I borrowed identical discs from friends and played the same tracks at the same time and switched the inputs to compare each track in real time.

To the Yamaha's credit, the tonal quality was smooth and accurate and difficult to distinguish on musical passages from the Sony. I noticed a slight midbass emphasis, which can be described as warmth on some music or haziness on other types of music.

Where the Sony excelled was depth and muscial separation. The Yamaha tended to "flatten" out the vocalist while the Sony had a focused presentation with depth without overpowering the music.

Both machines were very, very accurate, but the Sony had slightly better lower bass perfomance and a creditable clarity and airness.

My comments are totally based off my own equipment configuration so results may vary. Overall, I think the Yamaha 775 is a great player, definitely worthy of an audition.

Strength:

Rich sound, Precise and fast mechanism, Play-Xchange, Cd-text, build quality... READ ALL CD-R AND CD-RW

Weakness:

Most functions on this confusing remote... Don't lost it!

I bought this cd changer for my second sound system (home theater) and because I wanted a multiple disc system. At that time, I was thinking I was getting a So-So cd-player that would never replace my Roksan Caspian... I WAS WRONG!! In fact, at first listen, I immediately felt in love with this warm sound! Even if the look don't fit with the rest of my system (Roksan caspian), I used the 775 for my Hi-fi system and my Roksan is now in the living room! HEY, this little player beat my Roksan that have a value of 1300$!

Another good point of the 775 is that it can read Cd-R and Cd-Rw!!!

God I'm glad I got this cd player!
