Strength:

Great CD player, good digital input section. Very accurate recorder.

Weakness:

Track identification is weak.

I haven't used other consumer CD-R machines, but this one, although very well made, has its rough spots. Is it the piece or the technology? Don't know.

I bought this to transfer my vinyl collection to CD. Unfortunately, I've found that even on a very quiet system (I have Rotel separates, a decent turntable and phono section (Sumiko Project 1.2, NAD phono preamp), the auto track ID feature doesn't work well.

I've had to compensate by using CD-RW disks, ripping them on to my computer hard drive, separating the tracks and recording on to CD-R there. Of course, that also lets me use cheaper non Consumer Audio disks (and Sound Forge to clean up the noisier albums), but it's not exactly as easy as a cassette deck. Part of the blame lies with the music industry for creating all of the barriers to CD-R.

On the other side, the recordings, once done, are excellent. This unit is also a very nice CD player, sonically speaking. And I just don't know if any other audio CD-R is better.

Would love to know if other people have had similar experiences with other CD-Rs.

I have had the Marantz model DR-700 for a good few months now, but because my primary CD source is a Kenwood 5 disc carousel which does not have digital outputs, this CD recorder is connected via the ANALOG section. After making recordings on it, off both CDs and vinyl records, I have found many faults. First, the recording meter levels on the recorder are not that accurate; when it reads that the music program is peaking where the manual recommends, the playback level is not that high, when listening to your custom CD in the car, etc. When recording off CDs through the ANALOG section, even they dont sound that great coming onto blank Maxell CDRs...the decibels are much lower than the original CD, but that could be because everything in my system is running ANALOG right now. When recording off records onto the Marantz, the playback sound is even lower than off CDs, which is not that great. I plan to upgrade my system soon with a new CD player which has digital outputs, to see if that is the cure to my recording problems, plus I plan to maybe change up the brand of blank CDs Im buying, but as of right now, this Marantz is acting no better for me than a cassette deck would. I dont understand why.

Strength:

Crystal-clear recording from any source

Weakness:

Have to get used to the format - tricky

Welcome to the new century ! Found this used on Ebay and so happy that I pulled the trigger on the deal. Nice player with fantastic results as a recorder. Whatever goes in, comes right back out - whether analog or digital. It doesn't seem to matter in my setup if I use the digital inputs or not. Can't hear one bit of difference. Wishing it had a bit more gain available on the analog input amplifier for transposing my vinyl collection . . .

Strength:

Perfect copy quallity, imaging, easy to use, both optical as coaxial input. Analogue is satisfying.

Weakness:

reactiontime before copying. (0,5 sec).

I've made lots of copies and I can only say one thing: Perfect quality! The coaxial input is as precise as you can wish for. I have an Arcam D 290 and a Denon DCD 1450 AR with MIT interconnects. So if any mistakes are made when recording, I should hear them. So far, no mistakes are made. If I should guess how many copies I've made so far, it should be arround 300 / 350.

The only weakness is the delay at the start of a recording. The Marantz starts after 0,5 seconds. If an original starts the playback immediately you shouldn't use the synchro option. Otherwise you'll miss 0,5 seconds of the cd.

I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about. I find the analogue input satisfying. The record volume is quite accurate. But, of course the digital input is better. I advise you to buy another cd-player with a coaxial out. Get a good coaxial interlink, (MIT, WTB), and get the best copies you could ever imagine.

Playback is as good as you can expect from a recorder in this pricerange. You can compare it to a cd player in the pricerange of 350 / 400 US $. The sound is warm and the detail is satisfying. Use good interconnects. It makes the overall sound lots better!

Strength:

Strong Imaging on recording

Weakness:

Highly integrated unit

This unit makes great recording (through its Cocaial input) with very good imaging compared with the two above-mentioned recorders.

Since this unit is based-on the PHILIPS CDR-880, it is highly integrated unit where the transport is attached permenantly to the main board. THis recorder is a first generation and the new recorders (Marantz DR-6000 & DR-6050) will be released soon.

Strength:

Ease of use, manual is clear cut and simple to follow. I have only made about a dozen CDR's with it using the optical inputs from a Sony MD and it works great.

Weakness:

Not aware of any yet

So far so good. I like the fact that it comes with a 3 year warranty. For my purpose which is to make CD's of my music it is a good machine. However, I like the formating and the editing features of a good MD.

Strength:

Um excelente gravador & um ótimo CD Player

Weakness:

Bandeja do CD ruidosa

Everything

Weakness:

Remote, Needs to be used with BB500 for best performance on playback.

I work in a busy HIFI shop in Manchester and have been given the opportunity to try many a unit in the comfort of my own home (very lucky me). I have been using this machine now and am very very impressed. Recordings are every bit as involving as the original when recorded from my Reference Sony DVPS7700 but its the playback side that really puts on a show. When i played this as a cd player for the first time i was expecting it to be crap to say the least, I've been spoilt!! What can i say but no!!!

Outstanding!!! that is when played through my ARCAM Black Box 500 DAC, it kills my sony DVPS7700 dead that is stone dead, so much so that it wettened my thirst for a new cd player. First up the soundstage was amazing and the image impressive i've never heard my system sound so good. My girlfriend agrees with every view i have on this unit, Bass is far more controlled than on my sony and detail is great.

But i wanted more... So home came the Marantz CD17KIsig and what a bag of pure junk the DR700 Killed that too i couln't believe my ears really impressed as you can tell. I have a Sony SCD777ES on its way and will report on my findings as soon as i have had the chance to test it with the DR700. By the way i have since bought the DR700 from the shop. Well chuffed..!! (but only sounds great with the DAC) a must have.

I had the back off the other day and the build quality looks crap but who cares at this price it seems to sound great. Buy two for when this one breaks down.
