Strength:

Easy to use, ablity to record analog sources (vinyl, cassette, etc), adjustable recording level, impressive playback sound quality

Weakness:

Price (400 smackers! Open box too!), jog control is very sensitive, flimsy cd trays, price of consumer CD-R's, weak manual.

Well, what else can I say? I had my Sony CDP-CX400 mega-changer break on me after 35 days (after the 30 day return period) so to return after this period, Circuit City will only return if you upgrade. So I figured "what the hell" and got the Philips recorder that I've been eyeing for half a year anyway. I'm so glad the Sony piece of crap broke, because this recorder is the single coolest piece of audio equipment I've ever ownded.

First, the sound quality blows the Sony away for playback...so on that basis alone it's a great buy.

Second, the ability to record cd's is a dream come true! You can record analog and digital sources, and if you're electronically savvy live me (ie-you can program any VCR and dont read manuals for anything) you can figure this thing out just by the control panel and displays. I find this more useful than the manual which is pretty worthless. The enclosed "how-to" video is pretty useless too. But at least they made the effort, which is more than I can say about some companies, like SONY (yesI'm bitter, I wasted alot of money on their JUNK).
Anyway, my first CD came out flawless! I recorded a bunch of stuff from every source, even my VCR. Hook it up to your "tape record out" on your receiver and have a blast! I am seriously impressed with the ability to digitally record anything! Even radio! No more buying CD singles for me!
Just make sure when recording from analog to do a manual peak level search, when it goes into the red on the level meter the sound quality expectedly is a bit distorted. Other than that, cd to cd copies are flawless and sound identical to the source. At times you cant tell which one is from vinyl and from cd, the analog copy is that good.

The only real weaknesses of the unit are the flimsy cd trays. be very careful when handlng your cd's near an open tray, and the sensitve jog control knob. Its very senitive and you'll often find yourself accidentally zipping to the last track on the cd. Maybe they could have made the knob bigger.

So, if you've got the money to spend, go pick one up and have fun with it. Otherwise, I'd wait until its on the market another year or two and wait until the price drops. I mean, for this price you could have almost half paid for a cheap computer with a Cd burner, and be able to buy the cheap computer CD-R's as opposed to the expensive consumer ones. But overall I'm happy with this unit, but it better prove to be reliable for years to come at this price!

Strength:

Makes perfect copies, I cant hear a difference when I A/B with the original recording. The recorder is easy to use and basically foolproof.
It has an enjoyable playback akin to lower mid priced dedicated CD players.Tonally pleasing and lively enough for rock and pop but with excellent clarity for classical and acoustic.Quite strong base and clear treble.Quite involving to listen to.

Weakness:

Fairly light weight build and as everyone has mentioned fragile feeling trays however a little care should suffice to preserve.

An absolutely magic product and a lot of fun to use.
The cdr-audio blanks are coming down in price now about us$1.50 EACH in NZ. cd-rw are about 4 times the price.
The playback sound quality is pleasing and for some types of music I prefer it to my Sony cd player.
It makes a very good job of analogue recordings from old vinyl also so is useful for preserving old LPs.
So far and if the thing is problem free for a few years I would say its a bargain.
Puts Tape/Mini Disc in the shade for recording quality and is just the thing for making digitally perfect copies of those original CDs.
Buy one without hesitation if you are thinking about it!
How can the person before me give such a low score?
OK he had some problems but the performance is beyond reproach for the money.

Sony is slightly better in playback-stronger base, and better dynamics but not necessarily more musical.

Strength:

Easy to use and inexpensive.

Weakness:

Would be nice if had optical out.

Have owned the CDR775 for 3 months and have burned aproximately 40 Cds without any problems other than human error. I've also used all formats offered for recording except digital coaxial. Which means; internal, both 2x speed and monitoring; from DAT source using both optical and non digital, from CD source both optical and non digital.
Read instruction booklet and you'll avoid any problems.
I have no experience with the remote as i bought a floor model that didn't include remote. All in all i think the 775 is a great machine for the money. The CDs i've burned are of good sound quality. I should mention that i've used TDK 74min 650MB, Philips 74min 650MB, Memorex CD-R 80 DA and memorex CD-RW 74 A. Only problem was a glitch on one of three Mem. CD-RW that i used.

Strength:

This is for the CDR785.Excellent ADC/DACs, awesome analog output sound quality as with Digital, sampling rate converter works on Dish Network, unlike all Pioneer recorders.

Weakness:

This is for the CDR785. Manual has vital information about recording missing. No info on how to set recording levels and tech. reps. are the most ignorant people I've ever talked to. This recorder is DEFINATELY not for anyone new to digital recording, STAY AWAY! Besides having no info on how to set recording levels to maintain a 0 db setting, the manual contradicts itself- It will not digitally record bit for bit when any recording is made at 2x speed, "BESIDED AN ENTIRE CD DUB". For anything other than a CD DUB, you must record in listen mode, or the auto level control/compressor comes into play. On top of that, when recording off of radio, the manual also doesn't state how to pause the recording. NO MENTION WHAT SO EVER!! To top it off, the remote pause key doesn't work in record mode!! I found out that the front display single button play/pause will pause a recording. That button has the same function as the play button on the remote. SINCE the manual doesn't say, you must press the remote's play button to pause during recording, NOT THE OBVIOUS PAUSE BUTTON. I was assured months ago that a newly written manual would be headed to my mail box. As of today, NOTHING!!!! I can't say this loud enough, NEWBIES WHO HAVE NEVER DONE DIGITAL RECORDING ON A STAND ALONE UNIT, "STAY AWAY!!!". It doesn't offer an optical output but it's analog performance is so good, you won't miss it.

Well, let me first state this machine is awesome, but to use it, you have to guess and hopefully guess right. The manual is worthless and doesn't describe how to use the recorder, besides the obvious. Philips knows that the manual is inaccurate and incomplete, but have not sent me a revised manual yet. I'M STILL WAITING! So if you figure this machine out, it offers much more than anything on the market. First of all, "ALL" CD recorders are flaky. MY first Pioneer 739 was mechanically defective(I tried 3 because Pioneer's 739 and 509 use an incompatible sampling rate converter that refuses to see a digital output from my Dish Network receiver. All other recorders worked fine except the Pioneers.). My HK CDR2 was defective. My first Philips CDR785 was defective. For that matter, my first CV50 Panasonic DVD changer was defective. All these models were bought at Best Buy and Circuit City, so maybe it could be product handling besides poor quality control on these manufacturer's part.

Anyhow this product provides the most performance I found. It clearly blows away the HK CDR2 IMHO. I hated the sound of the HK, even the non defective model. It just had something missing. The Pioneer was much better but included some harshness. The CDR785 was a sonic know out. It was the equal of my Yamaha CD player and sounded awesome. The CDR2 was design flaw riddled, read my review of it. The Pioneer was just incompatible. I do most of my recording off of Dish Net. The sound quality lacks, but I can find rare bands that I never heard before and go buy their CDs. The 785's remote is awesome also. It's the most clutter free remote I've ever seen. Yet, it does everything the other's do. BTW, the 785 also offers an A/B editing feature the other's don't. This comes in handy when breaking one track up into many. A bit time consuming compared to minidisc, but it can be done. The other recorders had no such editing. The 785 offers a lot more than the others if you can guess how to use it. I would rate this machine a 3 for not having a useable manual, but 3 here, usually indicates crappy equipment, which this surely isn't. For that reason, I give it a 4. If it came with an useable manual, a stable 5.

I just wanted to add this as a follow-up to my previous review of this unit (scroll down two). I am now using this as a mastering deck in conjunction with my new FOSTEX VF-16 digital multitracker, and I'm happy to report that it's absolutely wonderful. You honestly don't know what your missing until you're able to record, mix, and master all in the digital domain. Goodbye hiss! Goodbye flabby bass response. By the way, I've 'burned the midnight oil' on this baby during it's thirty day exchange period, and I'm happy to report it's not demonstrating any of the abberations mentioned by reviewers below. So far, so good.

Strength:

fast double speed. very good quality of copies.

Weakness:

copies cant be copied again at twice a speed.
trays are weak and easily broken.
text is really hard to type
freezes up in "updating mode" only to turn it of helps
sometimes cd is ruined at that point
cd reads really slow wich irritates me alot.
some computer made cds cant be read in this machine( i dont know why) its stupid and makes you wonder why.

ive bought my cd machine for three or four months ago
i loan cds from friends and librarys.
i have increased my library of cd with about 100 cds
in this period. the quality of the music is far beyond imagination i should say. i got another cd for playing cds so i only use this to record cds so i havent been meeting the problem of braking the weak cd trays ( both are realy weak) as dont use it for playing sound but its good quality when listening to, that it is. i ruined about 5cds of more than 100 succesful ones so i cant say its not good. as so i get really mad when one is ruined
but im good with technology so it treats me fine.
its beyond reach how slow it reads cds.
as a summary if your lonely buy this i know all music lovers are lonely. listening to lyrics of those who understand your fight in this harsh world LOVE DOESNT LOVE BACK, GET LOVE IN MATERIAL THINGS, THEY BRAKE, LOVE LEAVES... im really happy crying to good musik

Strength:

good quality of copies, CDP to replace my old one

Weakness:

slow reading CD, flimsy cd tray, hard to input cd text

What a good quality of copies!!!
can not tell any difference of copy and original CD.
I've made more than 20 copies for 2 months.
till now, no malfunction has happened.

If I mentioned weaknesses,
- more durable tray
- optical output (it has an optical input)
- faster response of cd reading
- noise when reading empty tray (???? only mine)

Nevertheless, it is really good toy for fun.

Strength:

Good idea, good performance when it works. In tests the analog recording quality was excellent.

Weakness:

It does not work, it seems to be very unreliable

A nightmare.
I bought it two months ago.
First it stalled a couple minutes after it was switched on. The control unit was jammed. No choise but shut it down and wait it cooling down to get CD away from it.

It was serviced, a problem in PSU they said.

Second attempt to use it was more succesful. It did not get jammed. The problem was missing bits in analog recording. No sound quality, then. Copies were defective 20 minutes from the beginning of the recording.

Back to service. Since the problem was located there some three weeks ago (analysis was done in two places, it took three weeks before they started actually fixing it), service has been waiting for spare part (actually it is the complete CDR unit inside the CDR775, it is not possible to service it at all). As there seem to be difficulties to make any units that really work, the waiting may continue for some time.

I would warn anybody buying CDR 775. It is possible you do not get a chance to use it too often. Wait for the better. Philips has been very cooperative during this process of getting that machine work. The problem is that the player just does not get fixed.
