Strength:
Lots of ways to configure for your roon/gear/situation. $400 bucks? You're kidding! Available all over the place, don't laugh @ pro gear 'till you tried it! Lots of I/O options (analog or digital I/O), MIDI firmware upgrades by hooking up to your PC, don't know about MAC. Incredible choice of processing/EQ functions. Real Time Analyzer function extremely handy, SPL meter helps you keep the neighbors from complaining too much, memory settings, bypass, etc., the list goes on...Oh yeah, learned a lot about compressor/limiter functions in the real world of audio, and I am considering a tube (thats right, vacuum tube) external limiter/compressor/noise gate component in the near future!. This thing should open doors for you, not close (minded) doors. Can't afford Tact Audio Digital EQ, so this will have to do, and it does what it does just fine.
Weakness:
Costs $400 bucks. No bragging rights with this one! Just tell friends it cost a grand, they won't know the difference. I have heard about reliability problems on this product, so we'll see, its only been a month. They also said that about my first Harley-Davidson and it turned out to be very reliable and the best thing since push-up-bras. I never thought a sound processor or EQ was for me, but after this, I have seen the light, LOL. Hey all,
Customer Service Haven't had the pleasure YET, but I heard Behringer has really ramped up customer service after a lot of bad press, so we'll see. I like this thing, hope this helps. Oh yeah, if you are ever up Edmonton, Alberta way, and ya see a guy having a smoke in the driveway with the tunes pumping out, and a look like he just ate the canary, sounding fairly good from the road, he probably has a DEQ 24/96, might even be me. Peace. Similar Products Used: Two big ears, some crappy bouncy rooms, and a lot of Budweiser! |

Strength:
The RAM modded DEQ is quite good as a stand-alone DAC by itself. It has a well-balanced, comparatively glare-free sound that is superior to anything I've tried (albeit, that's a long string of somewhat inexpensive, entry-level CDP's). Its merits as a DSP unit are dazzling and I didn't find it especially hard to use, although it's probably not for the novice. It has a rather complete manual though. Those people with room-correction problems to solve, especially those who've already exhuasted physical solutions will no doubt want to look at what a digital approach can offer, what with the parametric EQ and FFT Analizer and all. Very flexible, and, if you only need to use it in the digital domain, at a street price of $300, the stock version is an absolute steal. In all, it has transformed my otherwise Mid-Fi system and effectively elevated it into the actual realm of Hi-Fi, at last.
Weakness:
Few and far between. A little difficult to get used to, but, once you do, you find it is logically designed. My unit initially blew the 1-amp fuse every time I turned it off(!). I substituted a 2 amp fuse and it has been without a problem ever since. The digital input level control should be set to the minimum of -15, in a range of - to + 15, in order to keep some the more loudly recorded CD's from overloading the input. But, so far, that has kept the level meter from entering the red (distortion), though it can occaisionally enter the yellow portion of the meter in the musical peaks (of the few loudest recorded CD's I have). I cannot hear a problem so far, however. The sound quality of the Behringer DEQ-2496 is something I can't attest to when it's straight out of the box, since I haven't heard it that way. I opted to buy the "basic" modification from Reference Audio Mods in California in February, '07 since web postings concerning the stock unit, at the time, argued back and forth between certain perceptable, and imperceptable qualities when using the analog outputs from the DAC - (which can be essentially avoided when going through the digital ins and outs and bypassing the analog outs). After some scrutiny, and knowing I would likely want to use it as a DAC, I took the plunge on the modded version. Right away I noticed that the DEQ sound was noticably more independent of the speakers. The sound was not as clustered around the drivers as with my humble Onkyo CD Changer. So the soundstaging improved considerably. The imaging specificity was a only a tad bit improved, however, but, then again, the basic mod from RAM does not include the much touted "Superclock III", which would likely offer considerable improvement here, as well as in some other departments, too. I'm not saying the imaging was bad, by any stretch, just that it was honestly acceptable to me and not a lot more.
