Strength:
BANG FOR THE BUCK, Very good detail, excellent high end clarity, very good soundstage presentation.
Weakness:
Bass could be better defined, and have more "slam" I have used this unit now for over two years, and I am still amazed at how good it is for the price. Very good detail, good soundstaging, no digital glare or graininess-- an excellent piece overall. Yes, more expensive DAC''S will be smoother with better bass and more detail, but my Gamma holds it''s own and will improve ANY japanese unit beyond your expectations My system: Martin Logan SL3 speakers Audio Research LS9 solid state pre-amp Transparent Super interconnects Tara RSC speaker cables Acurus A150 Amplifier (okay maybe that''s why bass could be better) Not wanting to give up convenience, I have used this DAC with a Pioneer LD/CD changer (the MD401), a Panasonic C220 DVD Changer, and most recently the Denon DVM 3700 DVD changer. When I upgraded the Panasonic to the Denon, I had hoped that the built in DAC of the Denon would outclass my CAL Gamma. Boy, was I wrong. Although the Denon makes a much better transport than the Panasonic, the built in DAC does not compare to the Gamma. |

Strength:
Compact size, low cost.
Weakness:
None I could detect. Read some reviews from www.soundstage.com that looked encouraging. Wanted to see if a dedicate out board DAC would out perform the built in DAC of my Yamaha RX-V2092 receiver circa 1997. The pice of the Gamma started out at $395, I believe, than $295, and now $99 probably for close out. The manufacture date on my unit is 1998. Similar Products Used: Built in DAC on receiver. |

Strength:
Smooth laid back sound. Solid build. Coaxial and Optical inputs.
Weakness:
Unregulated PSU. Single chip DAC. Artificial highs. Sounds congested when the music gets busy. Very good entry level DAC. Sounds strained and congested during complex passages, but for the most part smooth and musical. Similar Products Used: N/A. This is my first outboard DAC. |

Having lived with the Marantz CD 63 (the original version)for quite some time, the hardness in the upper midrange and the harsh treble made me think of upgrading with a DAC. Reading the reviews about the California Audio Labs DAC Gamma with its more laid back music presentation and softer treble, I thought it would be exactly what the doctor ordered. And it was. The Marantz and the Gamma synergize, and two aspects of the music presentation become instantly apparant. First the Gamma takes away the upfront presentation of the Marantz, and places the soundstage between and behind the speakers. Gone are the trumpets and saxophones that come out at you to scream. Secondly, the Gamma enriches the music with a true foundation of deep and strong bass, exactly that was missing in the Marantz. Because of these two changes I had to get used to the entirely different music presentation. Now it is as if I am watching the performers from more distance. Not bad, as I am an observer by nature, and also in reality I would choose a seat not to close to the stage. The fullness created by the richer bass reproduction gives now such a more pleasant feel to the music, that was missing in the clear and clean but cool sounding Marantz. Details are as much in the front of the soundstage as with the Marantz, but less in the back. Finger snapping and hand clapping have more strength and reality over the Gamma, and in particular live recordings come out better, revealing more of their atmosphere.Female voices are more palpable and sibilants more natural and less prominent. Overall, I find the music picture more round and complete, and above all more enjoyable than with the Marantz alone. For all these aspects and the price of US$295, the Gamma does an outstanding job. |

The Gamma is very musical, smooth and sweet. It does sugar-coat a bit: the highs are a little rolled off, dynamics are toned down and bass doesn't pound perfectly. An excelent value and never offensive. -musical. |
