I just set up and broke in a Pioneer DV-414 DVD Player/Musical Fidelity X-24K DAC, and have now carefully played a half dozen Chesky and Classic Audio DVDs. I got the DV-414 for $359 from SoundCity, and the X-24K for $399 (after a $100 trade-in on an old Audio Alchemy DDE1 DAC) from Audio Advisor. I used an Illuminations D-75 digital cable to the DAC, and an Audioquest Ruby analog interconnect to the preamp. I am also using the Musical Fidelity X-PSU upgraded power supply which powers both the X-24K and the Musical Fidelity X-DAC that I am using with my Rega Planet. The X-PSU can power four of the Musical Fidelity units, and is powering only these two units. |

I combine useing of the X-10D, X-DAC and the X-PSU with the MF E-60 CD Player and the A2 Amp. At first, I bought the AMP and the CD player and after one month I feel the music in this system is not live and in luck of space and without enought details. (The Spk I use is Totem Mite) |

I have owned a Sony X-33ES CD player for about 5 years. Thinking (but not sure) how much sound I was missing by using a 5 year old digital technology, I decided to get an outboard DAC to try. X-DAC is sold for about $500 by Audio Advisor. I was pleasantly surprised. Whereas the fixed level output of the X-33ES souned good, but occassionally harsh and gritty, X-DAC never sounds harsh or gritty. It has repectable detail and imaging. Bass is smooth, but not too dynamic. It came with a wall-pack 12VCD power supply. I wondered if an external power supply would offer more punch bass, but according to Audio Advisor, the external power supply is not available in US yet. X-DAC is also HDCD compatible. |

Very involving musical experience ! The DAC is the last thing I added into the system and the music (Opera mostly) began to move me for the first time (though I'm a music lover for many years). It's very good at resolving comlex sound like symphonies and climaxes in opers. There is NO 'big bang' improvement in "sound" but the clarity, fidelity and resolution power increased amny folds and many subtle details of the music came out. CDs previously classified by me as "bad recording" become musically moving to me. There is STILL some harshness in the sound I think it is from the recording (???) I may deal with it using X-tone. I bought that but took it away 20 minutes after use. It's off line now !! |

this thing sucks! when people come to a hifi shop for a better dac to upgrade their own cd player, they often asked more from it. otherwise, why bother??? indeed, if u tried the Rotel951 cd player, u will give up the idea of purchasing this Musical Fidelity DAC immediately. they two share the same HDCD decoder/digital filter and the d/a coverter version which is made by BurrBrown--pcm69 dual single bit wiht the same resolution as 18 bits. the difference occur in the out-put stage. i used to do some ab listening between these components. honestly, i cannot distinguish. in holland, Rotel is priced 1150 gulden while Musical Fidelty 1250. the chioce r urs. |
