Strength:

Very clear sound; great lows, mids, and highs; light, soft, comfortable

Weakness:

Somewhat flimsly plastic

I read many a review on this product here at audioreview and at other sites and decided to finally upgrade from my Sony MDR-CD60 (cheap!). I don't have that much experience with headphones, but immediately taking them out of their packaging I noticed a vast sound quality improvement over the aforementioned. This product pounds with intense bass and clear mids and highs. I listened to Rammstein's Live Aus Berlin CD and it sounded like I was right there! 3-D gaming (Quake3, CStrike, UnrealTournament)also sounds awesome! The little things like detachable cord and gold-plated connectors make this a value at its low price of $70 refurbished. Speaking of refurbished, these cans didn't have a scratch on them and look brand new. The pads are very comfortable and these headphones look stylish as well. The only downfall that these headphones have is that the plastic arm the ear units are attached to are a little weak, but don't let that turn you down...these phones are a great value

Weakness:

Somewhat flimsy

The sound is pretty neutral. Good high end and good low end. The midrange is a little emphasized but it could be my amp. These are still not broken in so if they improve they will be a very good value.

I was looking for a great headphone and I just wanted to buy a Sennheiser for its reputation. I ended up with this one because of the great price and quality. It has a great warm sound. I can recommenend it to everybody who is looking for a great headphone for about $50-$100.

It also looks great for a headphone. I looked at many others and I even thought this was the nicest in the Sennheiser product line. :)

These are incredible!

I can't believe that these things don't cost ten times as much. The sound is fantastic. Since I got these I have not put them down. The $2,600 I spent on a set of Polk loadspeakers was a big waste comp[ared to the incredible sound I get with these headphones. I have put my Polk pseakers on sale on E-Bay and I'm going to use the money I get for a ski trip to Calgary for my entire family.

I can't believe it - for $200 ($65 for these phones and $135 for my Sony Walkman CD player, I have better sound than I did in my $5,700 audio system ($2,600 for Polk speakers, $1,900 for a Yamaha DSP-1, $1,200 for a Marantz CD player. The clearity is better, the details of the music are better, the musicality is better.

Strength:

Bargain deal on refurbished headphones that sound wonderful

Weakness:

none that I can think of

Great upgrade for portable sound systems. I use mine with a high end AIWA (for portable devices that is - I don't think you can call any boom box "high end") $300 CD boom box and a $130 SONY portable CD player.

The detail in the sound is amazing. I find myself re-listening to my entire CD collection and hearing things that I missed on my Paradigm 450 speakers.

I read that the most cost effective way to upgrade your sound system was to get a truly great pair of headphones and boy was that right.

After researching at good.cans.com I almost went with the Sennheiser 600's at $400, then I went to Sennheiser's web site and came across this bargain. For only $65 I have the top of the line Sennheiser circumaural headphones. They are "refurbished" but I honestly could tell no difference. They were packed as new and as the poster below says "they smelled new, loopked new and there is no way I would have figured out that they were not brand new except for the ordering information and the price.

These cans are a steal at $65!!! Grab a pair now.

I got these and they are da bombe !

My hair doesn't get messed up and the look of these headphones means I will be stylin'

Makes all the tunes sound better than my speakers.

Real high quality audio. My boyfriend talked to a number of
different audio stores before buying these for my birthday.

The best birthday present that I could have (other than a diamond ring). These headphones sound great! and are super comfortable to wear. Other headphones hurt my ears and messed up my hair but these feel good and I can wear them for hours at a time. And the sounds?

Well you must listen to these to truly appreciate the sound quality. With live CD's it sounds like I am right in the audience. A way big value for the money.

Strength:

smooth sounding, accurate reproduction, clear throughout the spectrum, detailed, comfy

Weakness:

Needs power, hard to keep clean

Unlike my senn hd433, these cans sound much smoother than those. I must admit, maybe i overated the hd433 in my other review, but that was because i had made the jump from something horrid like the sony's to something half decent. The hd433 were harsh at times and the sound didnt quite have that refined sound about it. The 495's are like liquid compared to it. The highs are just right, reaching that perfect spot in your ears without hurting them. The mids are clear and accurate. The bass goes low and is tight. Vocals are a dream to listen to and it does well at classical music as well. While the bass isnt overpowering or satisfying deep like sony's or koss, it isnt weak in any way. Its not soft and it doesnt roll off unexpectedly, it just sounds the way the music is meant to sound and it sounds good. Much of the other qualtities have been described in the other reviews further down. Its transparent, wide soundstage, great detail, comfortable etc

To the bad points, these baby's need power to drive them. Sure they work on small portable devices, but apart from being at a softer volume, the sound just doesnt sound as good. The qualities of the headphones still show, its still smooth and clear, but the music feels a little flat. With enough power, the music just comes alive.

Another bad point is that the headband and earpads smell a bit wierd now. Ive used them constantly for half a year now. I guess that it could just be my head, but im not sure of anyway you can clean it.

I just want to comment on the last post. What he said seems to be partly true. The sound isnt in your face, its more like your sitting in the audience and the band is playing to you. I wouldnt go as far as saying its pillow's on your ears. I guess the sound is a bit more laid back. The sound isnt about the volume, its plenty loud, but as i said, its like your sitting in the front row, not standing with the musicians.

At loud volumes the phones still hold themselves together, and at extremely loud volumes, the bass can distort some of the mids...but thats only slightly and at that level you'd be deaf pretty quick and headphones would be useless to you.

The phones arent for bass freaks. The bass is low and tight. Its loud and accurate, but there are other phones out there that have the bone shattering bass. What these headphones are about is quality. It has a real airey feel to it that just makes music a dream to listen to.

I gave it 5 for value because the quality of the headphones sound like it should be worth more, and 5 for overall rating because it is better than i imagined. You cant spend $70 and expect $200 headphones. They do not sound better than the 580 or 600, thats for sure, but for $70, i dont think you can find a better pair of headphones with an overall quality that the hd495's possess.
