LOUD. Good sound, deep bass but nothing revelation like. Not worth the price. The open air design sucks. Its loud and bleeds in outside noise. Furthermore, the lack of an on cord volume control is a real pain. Worst of all, the automaticly adjusting headband creaks loudly in your ears while moving your head any faster than a gentle sway. Its enough to drive you bat-ship. I regret that I bought this hunk of crap. I would recommend the studio monitor line instead.

Strength:

Great sound, Comfortable

Weakness:

None!!

I was looking for something not to pricey with good sound and after a lot of research and reviews I have chosen the MDR-CD380... & I am very satisfied. Good sturdy base, crystal clear treble.... overall a very full sound and a great tonal balance. I have tested them on different systems and it's clear that they can produce whatever you feed them. I enjoy them so much I keep thinking what the bigger brothers would sound like. Lastly: Light & COMFORTABLE!

Strength:

Great bass. Comfortable.

Weakness:

A bit clunky, not very portable.

These headphones sound great. The bass is full and satisfying, unlike alot of other high end headphones that are weak at lower frequencies. These headphones are also easily driven and can sound great without a headphone amp, which makes it great for cd players or for your computer. I also find the circumaural design to be very comfortable.

Strength:

Comfortable, nothing else good to say about them. I can see how this type of headphone would appeal to what goes for music these days; the "booming bass" laden trash passed off as music.

Weakness:

They lack any clarity and the highs are muffled along with too much emphasis in the bass area. Muddy is how these sound.

I listened to several different types of music from Pink Floyd to traditional Chinese instruments to blues.

Strength:

Bass, bass, bass. Long chord can be a mixed blessing, but it's better than too short!

Weakness:

Pretty big earphones.....got the Princess Leia thing going on. I have a small head, so that might be why they don't fit too well. I do wish they were a little smaller, so they don't look as huge on my head.

A long time trance/techno fan, I was intent on getting a set of headphones that could handle the strong bass. Researching Grado, Sennheiser and Sony, I settled on the CD380's because of the 40 mm drivers and the VERY wide range (10 - 25K).....if you're looking for a clear, crisp treble that can meet the bass halfway, you may want to spend a little more. In my opinion, these headphones are meant to make the earth shake, and not to hear the trickle of water on one of those relaxation CD's. The sound quality overall, especially for the price, is superb. Whether discman or home theater, the purity of the sound can't be matched. What astounded me the most was the FULLNESS of it....because the earpieces go entirely over your ear, you don't miss a thing. Again, the price was very reasonable, considering the quality and potential....your CD will quit before these headphones do.

Strength:

Powerful, accurate, and cheap.

Weakness:

Leak more sound than my 270s. Don''t look sturdy enough to take on the bus or long trips.

My first pair of headphones were a set of Sony CD270s. I LOVED these cans, but unfortunately, the left one gave up on life after 6 years of fairly heavy duty usage - everything from Verdi to Mahler to Sash! and Blumchen. I got the 380s because I was in love with the clarity and strength of my 270s, and I wanted to treat myself to a set of bigger drivers. I didn''t expect it, but the sound clarity and definition shocked me when I first put these on, because I thought I had heard everything already with my old phones. At first, they seemed to have a different frequency response than the 270s, although I''ve gotten used to it already after 2 days, and may not ever bother to properly setup the EQ to have a linear response across the range. I listen to music through a Diamond MX300 (based on Aureal Vortex 2 chipset, now sadly deceased!), which has an 18bit DAC and a killer amp on the card. I can hear defects in mp3s, and even on CDs sometimes. The sound clarity is phenomenal. The bass can be painfully strong (if you wish; no one will make you turn it up), the mid seems about right, and the treble is absolutely gorgeous when listening to Scheherazade. I''m not yet used to the self-adjusting headband, but the phones are very comfortable. The 270s had leatherette earcups which tore over time, while these 380s have simple cloth, which I expect will last longer. My only, only concern is that the half-open design of the cups allows noticeable amounts of sound out. This could only be a problem if my roommate wanted to sleep, however. They are also extremely light. I hope that this doesn''t imply weak construction, though. Lastly, I have a fairly big head and ears, and these phones fit me comfortably.

Strength:

Clear sound, comfortable on the ears. Good bass and treble.

Weakness:

I''d rather it had an L-shaped plug, I''m afraid this might get affected over time.

I too have only used cheap headphones in the past, but I''ve been interested in getting some better quality. At Fry''s they had a display of about 15 or so headphones on display for people to listen to. I didn''t think I''d end up spending this much, but I enjoyed the comfort of these headphones. I wanted something that would cover my ears so I could actually hear some bass. These CD380''s are doing a very good job. In fact, now I can hear the hum and noise from my computer, they''re that sensitive. The sound is very clear when I plug them into my stereo. I''d say it was a good purchase.

Strength:

Comfort, long cord, sound.

Weakness:

Long cord.

This is my first pair of good headphones. All my prior experience has been with fairly basic and low quality headphones and earbuds that come with walkmans and discmans.

The 380's are quite comfortable. While watching a movie, just a quick readjustment every 30 minutes or so kept them comfortable. Not readjusting them made them pinch on the ears just a little bit (I have a big head =P)

The long cord can be either a nuissance or a blessing. It's great for sitting down and watching TV or a movie at night, the cord reaches back a far distance, to a comfortable sitting position. I didn't have to move my chair towards the TV like I thought I would have to. If you're using it with a discman or computer however, the extra long cord could get in the way unless you find a good way to tuck it out of the way.

As for the audio itself....well it sounds great :) Obviously a pair of $40 headphones won't reproduce the sound of a $2000 home theatre, but it sounds great nonetheless, and you won't lose much if you use this over the home theatre speakers for those late-night movies when everyone else is in bed :)

The base is heavier than I have heard in any other headphones, though not terribly heavy.

For $40, these are a good deal.
