Strength:

Looks Cool, sounds decent, is sealed

Weakness:

Hurts your ears, has fatiguing sound, is sealed, sounds like crap compared with the Senn HD535

SOunds a heckuvalot better than stock cr@p headphones, but pales in comparision with my Senn HD535s (on sale for $80 at United Audio). The Sony's lack the natural sound, tight bass, clarity, and comfort of the more expensive senns. Since they are sealed, though, they help block sounds, which the Senn does not. Plus, they crank off a portable cd player, thanks to their low impedance and high sensitivity, so they can pull more power. The Senn really needs a dedicated amp lie the Airhead or Musical Fidelity headphone amp to really crank.

Strength:

quality in the workmanship, cool style, bright and clear sounds, strong bass, lightweight

Weakness:

cord is too long, small earcups and not too good isolation, power is on the weaker end

I compared these with the Koss R-10 (see my review). Both are in the same price range with a difference of only a few dollars.

- I liked the strong bass
- bright, clear and crisp sounds
- very impressed with the little details put into the styling which is sleek and cool looking
- very good quality, and workmanship
- these are lightweight, although they are a bit tight
- I thought the sound is not too powerful (Sony rates it at 500mW)
- I didn't like the small earcups because they don't cover the whole ear, hence not too good in isolating outside noise
- although the silver metallic paint finish looks great, I prefer a smooth black finish which would last longer
- the cord is a bit long, and could cause occasional tangles

I choose this product over the Koss R-10 because of the overall quality put into it. I also like the extra bass that this headphone can produce.

Strength:

Looks good
Head-shaking bass

Weakness:

Head-shaking bass that lacks detail
Mediocre mids

I am posting this to refute my previous post dated 7/25/00.

These headphones do produce head-shaking bass--but that is both a strength and a weakness. In so doing, the bass becomes thick and undetailed! And that boomy bass tends to smear detail in the midrange. It’s ironic that it uses similar drivers to the MDR-G82LP, which (because of its circumaural, semi-open design) produces clearer mids and highs--but at the expense of bass (lacks both output and detail). The other three headphones (the MDR-G72LP, MDR-V6 and MDR-V600) certainly all have more detailed bass than these.

In short, when it comes to closed-type headphones, you get what you pay for.

Strength:

Great Fidelity

Weakness:

Small ear cups

I initially bought these because of price constraints, but the more I use them the better I like them. The sound quality is great! The only drawback is that the pads for the ears are smaller than normal, wich is actually something that I appreciate about this model.

Strength:

Quality sounds great to me [although, I'm no audiophile :)]
Pretty cheap [$35]
They look darn cool!
Small-ish earcups.

Weakness:

Small-ish earcups [I like 'em that way... but I can see how this could be a weakness]

Just got these headphones today, but I'm so far very impressed with the sound quality. They look very cool, and I'm not sure you can beat the sound quality in this price range. Highly recommended. [But hey, I'm only a 'casual listener' :)]

Strength:

Good strong sound, good bass.

Weakness:

Ears get hot after hours of use.

These headphones are great. Like another reviewer says I can hear sounds that I have never heard before while listening to some CDs. Fits well and has a nice long cord.

Strength:

good sound! nice long cable and pretty cheap

Weakness:

none really for the cash

I use these for listening to MP3s at my desk computer and they do the job nicely. Well made and comfy they should last for years unless I stand on them. They give a great sound through a walkman as well although the cable's a bit long for using all the time.

Strength:

Great bass, good sound, nice looks, long cord

Weakness:

Okay mids, feels cheap, hurts ears after 1-3 of listening

When I got these headphones, WHEW! I was blown away! I have used simple, under $30 headphones for years, then I decided to step up to these ones, it was amazing! First off they look cool. They have a beautiful shiny silver design to them. The cord is extra long, like 10ft and gold tipped. The bass shook my head like crazy and the highs were nice. I began to hear parts of the music I never knew existed. The music really came alive.

On the down side the mids aren't really there and bass lacks distinction. The construction itself feels and little cheap (it gives a little). Also the extra long cord may annoy some.

All in all, it is great deal. They were worth every penny.

Strength:

Price Look Cable lenght

Weakness:

Comfort - Poor sound reproduction -

I bought this Sony for my portable cd player. There was no problem with sound levels - try a Senn. and you will see ! ....
But after few minutes, my ears began to sweat and I felt like some claustrophobia. The sound wasn't good, just a little falt - maybe the 30 mm drivers ??
For an outdoor use in wintertime, okay, but at summertime, firget it. After this, I plugged it in my hi-fi system, but it was the same disappointment. Flat sound, and sometimes on vocals, I used to feel like an electric pricking into my eardrum. Compared to my old Technics RPF1 ( to big for outdoor use )-they suck !

Strength:

Good overall sound, stronger than usual bass, long cord can be useful, almost no sound leakage.

Weakness:

Comfort, stronger than usual bass, long cord is pain.

Yes, I know I said two things were strengths and weaknesses, but the fact is, it all really depends on what you use these phones for.
I moved up from a pair of $10 Aiwas to these, and I gotta say I'm extremely happy. I hear small, background things I've never heard before in the music I listen to. In one CD I've got, there's this slight metallic jingling sound in one 3 second spot which isn't part of the song, but I never ever heard that with my Aiwas, only these. Almost every part of any song I've listened to with these is a lot stronger than before, not just the low-end bass. For example, Metallica's S&M album is a concert the rock band Metallica did with a symphony of some kind, complete with cellos, violins, and other more classical type music instruments. With these headphones, I hear the symphony much better than before, while still hearing guitar and drums from Metallica just fine.
The stronger than usual bass is a good thing for me. I find the bass to be clear, very little distortion at all (try that with Busta Rhymes' Genesis with Sony's Megabass on). I'm not a bass-head where I turn up the bass on everything I listen to, but with certain CDs, I like the extra bass on,. In the other CDs I don't turn the bass up on, that extra oomph in these headphones makes the songs a little better. Of course, this will probably make some people dislike them, because I would guess it's not very good for classical music, or other types of music that really shouldn't have extra bass in it.
I'm sure the long cord would be helpful in a studio or home environment so you can basically sit halfway across the room from the stereo, but it's a pain for me because I use these headphones with my portable CD player, which I keep in my jacket pocket most of the time. Having a 10 foot cord does me no good when all I need is about 2 feet.
I'm usually listening to my music on the CTA bus or Metra train, and since those things can be noisy, I usually have the volume up kinda high. These headphones have almost no sound leakage, so I'm not disturbing anyone who's sitting more than 2 feet away from me. I know these things don't have much sound leakage because a friend of mine has them, and he usually keeps the volume maxed on his Minidisc player, and I never hear anything from him until he takes the headphones off.
These headphones might sound good, but they can be extremely uncomfortable. Since they push on top of your ears rather than fitting around them and are bigger than the usual headphones that do this, they push your ear inwards, which after an hour or more, can be very uncomfortable. They also make your ears heat up a lot (which I'm finding useful as Chicago's starting to get cold), but that's something that ails almost all headphones bigger than the cheap headphones that come with most portable CD players and the headphones that surround your ears.
People here are talking about the cheap construction of these headphones, but I'm not really seeing it. My friend that has these headphones has broken at least 3 or 4 pairs of headphones in the past 2 years that I've known him. A pair of Panasonics, Sony streetstyles, Sony CD180s, and I think one more, but he still hasn't broken his V300s, which he's had for 2 or 3 months now (which was the life span of those CD180s he had). I personally have yet to see these show any signs of being able to break easily, but I've only had them for a few weeks.
Overall, I like them a lot. $50 is a little more than I'd like to spend on headphones, but given these have such great sound quality, I think they're pretty much worth it.
