Strength:

Small size, single-sided straight cord

Weakness:

Relatively muddy sound

When I bought these cans at clearance for $49.95, I initially thought they were good. But compared with Sony's pricier models (and perhaps their less expensive MDR-V300, but not the MDR-V200), these sound muffled. The bass sounded asleep, and the highs were uneven. The midrange--a little too echoey. Now that the MDR-V400s are officially discontinued, there is no true successor to these rather mediocre cans. For the price I paid for them, and compared with all the others I've ever owned, these were just average.

Weakness:

Where's the bass... and the mids, and the highs?

This is an update to a review posted 7/21/00:

I used to own a pair of these, and my brother still owns a pair - and I'll have to say that their sound quality is REALLY crappy. C'mon, where's the bass - and the mids, and the highs? The same goes for the MDR-V200 and MDR-V600 pieces of crap, as well. And these headphones all make you sweat from extended use.

C'mon, Sony, you can do way better for about $70 than these crappy sound transducers! Judged Not Acceptable. :(
